Agreed, that is an excellent find. I'm guessing this is what you would get for $200 from Helm ( http://www.helminc.com/helm/product2...12R&itemtype=N ).

A word of warning, aside from the malware warning (like mmcc, I use NoScript, which virtually eliminates the chance of infection from JavaScript), is that this does indeed appear to be copyrighted by GM. Like pirated music, it's a use-at-your-own-risk situation. My plan is to look (like I would at a bookstore), and if the information is useful, buy the real thing from Helm (I've been considering it, but have had no idea until now if it may be useful to me).

I'm pretty sure I've stumbled across this autocats.net site before when looking for information on CAN/OBD2/GMLAN stuff, and suspected the material I found was perhaps not meant to be released to the public at no charge. It seems pretty clear this material was designed to be released to the public (at least to the public willing to shell out the money for the information).

Normally when this happens (frequently) the web page doesn't behave properly and I have to allow scripts which I normally do if the site is trusted but I didn't allow scripts on this site. I assume I browsed unscathed.
I think Autocats is expected - for the expanding tree in the table of contents and etc. - but when I was browsing it, it was also including script code from some Russian (.ru) site. That's probably bad.

I am more than happy to send Helminc the money but :

"Item not yet released to Helm from manufacturer. The item will be available on 7/1/2012 "

I read the posted link using an Ipad and took screen shots
    ----------------------------------------------------------

I have been looking for information on how to remove the headliner for adjustment of the Radio aerial base assembly and found it there.

Also there was information of what was in the antenna base unit ie the Multi-band aerial and information on AM/FM reception and test units.

    ------------------------------------------------------------
Other items found: -- many we know about via comments from Wopontour and others

    1. Speed compensated volume - road wind noise volume adjustment - not sure we have this on the Volt ?

    2. GPS aerial goes into a splitter (nav system and onstar use ?)

    3. The Vacuum evaporative test may take 45 mins and uses 1 amp

    4. onstar is awake for 48 hours with a load of 40 ma with 80 ma peaks -

5 some functions are awake for 3 hours and other small parasitic load are listed -fob Tire pressure sensors ect.

    6. nice chart on battery drain and days to 50 % state of charge also re-states the 14.8 Volts max voltage for AGM battery.
    and a voltage charge chart
    12.75 volt is 100 % at 75 f
    12.00 volts is 20 % at 75 F

    7. There is a 12 volt hall effect sensor connect to the BCM its a PWM signal

    8. and for solardave the battery charging system has a battery sulphation mode :-)

Reading about the other modes is also very interesting ( the headlight mode and plant assembly mode )
even the NORMAL mode has many parts ( wipers on for more than 3 s or speed is over 90 mph )
How you get into tow mode ? no idea.

    9. A long section on tire (tyre) pressure operation.

    10. The lists of available test equipment for the volt is a must read.

Tow/Haul mode mentioned there is with respect to the 12v battery and if I were to hazzard a guess it is be because some of the 12v battery control logic/hardware (and hence diagnostic/repair) is shared with another vehicle such as a two-mode hybrid or maybe the orlando MPV. I say that because the next line is
"When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9-15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature."

Since the Volt's uses an inverter from the HV battery not a separate generator.

I did more security scans yesterday.. nothing I've found to scan it found malware.. just cross-site scripting (which could be insecure, but in this case I'd guess its just lazy programmers).

Is Helm selling DVD? If so I'd consider it but last year they only had paper.. much much harder to search so I figured I'd wait until there was a digital version. The Top level does say (in russian) they are providing online access to service manuals, for free. But I like having the files on my laptop so I can grep it, and also have my computer read it aloud when I want/need that. I've already downloaded a copy via wget, but do prefer to properly pay for copyright material. I sent the email about buying a copy.. (and reporting the cross-site scripting).

The 2012 isn't available until July 1, 2012, and appears to only be paper. The 2011 is available in paper ($200) or DVD ($250). I'm not sure where autocats got the 2012 European version.

It is possible that GM licensed the data to autocats in some way; I cannot imagine them taking customers that spend $40K or so on a car to court over access to a $200 manual that they likely wouldn't have purchased anyways.

wget is nice (I did the same), although Google ("site:http://www.autocats.net/manual/chevr...nts_2012/Volt/ [term]") works pretty well, too.

This is a user friend offline mirroring program that I've used in experimental ways only on my own sites for reading on a netbook while I'm camping in the wilderness ... or something along those lines:

Excellent point on using the google "site:" command/directive. I usually put the terms in front especially for long urls.
