When selecting the "Engine Assisted Heating (plugged in ) option in config I assume you need to be careful as this will allow the engine to start and if you have it plugged in a closed garage carbon monoxide will be a problem???

The manual says that setting is available if the car is so equipped. I looked for that setting but couldn't find it, so it appears that my Volt doesn't have that ability. I am not sure which Volts have it. But really, how cold does it get in your garage? If it's attached to the house, probably not very cold. And if it's not attached, would CO really be an issue? Anyway, the car is only going to run for 10 minutes at the most.
Is this on your car now? If so this will be the first I have heard with the option actually enabled. Now if they can retrofit the early 2012's with this.

When I posted this question I was reading my manual and assumed my vehicle had this option since it is well equipped. My wife has the car at this time and I am not able to check to see if I have the option. I will check and let you know.
I recall now. I found the below in the PDF version of the 2012 Volt Manual. This functionality never made it into production as far as I know. There must have been some last minute hangup (design issue, legal issue, some issue). Tech/Doc writers are the last to know sometimes.

I got my Volt about 3 weeks ago. We have been having temps. over 100 degrees of late and the remote startup of the climate system while plugged into the power source is very nice. I can start it from in my house and go out after 5 minutes to find the car comfy cool. I have, on occasion used it without it being plugged in the the power source. For example, I decided to make a stop to buy something yesterday. Temp was about 106 degrees at the time and my dog was in the back seat. I got out of the car, locked the doors and started the AC from outside. This is tricky because your dog's life is dependent on your being sure the AC starts up (easy to tell) and that you are back within 10 minutes to get in and drive or extend the AC time by another 10 minutes. I am 75 years old and often forget things. So, I do not plan to do this habitually. Also, you must realize that this eats into you mileage on electricity.
