Interesting comparison. I drove a 2005 TDI Passat for 170,000 miles before selling it to buy a Volt. The Passat was a great car. 38MPG average. It was easy to get 45 MPG on long highway trips. A great cruiser. The TDI has great torque at low speed - after the turbo spools up. Maintenance costs were steep. The special oil the TDI requires means no quick lube shops will have the correct oil. An average oil change, every 10k miles, runs $55.00. Don't forget the timing belt at 100k miles for $1200.00. The Passat was quieter than the Volt and obviously a larger car. I considered buying the new Passat TDI but was really looking to move forward in terms of efficiency and technology. That only left a choice, for me , between the PIP and the Volt. The Volt interior and drive quality feels like a nice German car. I recently had a chance to drive a 2012 BMW 328i with the 4 cylinder turbo. There was a lot to like but I still prefer the Volt. There is a quality to driving the Volt that makes comparisons almost meaningless.
