Default Auto-sleep mode after locking the doors ?

Something incredibly stupid happened to me yesterday night.
After terrible traffic jams for a Saturday night, I was late meeting some friends at a place a I had never been to.
Rushing out of the car, guess what? I locked the doors but I suppose I never pushed to power off button when leaving my seat. (back in the old days, removing a key from the car naturally shut off the engine and power)
When I came back a few hours later, I could easily find my car on the parking lot: it was the only one with the lights on and the engine running. And the doors were still locked.
I managed to burn the remaining 10 miles of battery range through the evening plus some gas sitting perfectly idle on that parking lot.
Did the car warn me when I left ? No!
Did the car complain when I locked the doors ? No

I agree there should be a warning (I though it at least beeped a lot with the door open and it running).
Even better would be to be able to set an email/txt warning timer..

FYI, some folks leave their pets in the car running w/A/C on while they eat lunch or whatever so they would not want it "auto-shut off'd". Obviously they could make this configurable.

Actually I think it was good the car let you lock it (so no easily stolen) as some cars I've owned would never let you lock the drivers door if it was running and you got out.

I keep OnStar phone number handy in case I leave the FOB in the car and can't get in my (2011). 1-888-667-8279.

I was surprised I didn't get an OnStar window sticker like we did on our 09 SRX, so even if I have to borrow a strangers cell phone I can call OnStar and have them access the car. But yes there should be a more restrictive "exit the vehicle while running" set of warnings.

My welcome to On Star package included a plastic card with the phone number for my wallet.

If you leave the car with your keys and its on the car chimes. If you rush away from the car or there's a lot of background noise that chime, which is from the interior speakers, will be lost in the din of the world.

As some others have commented, they sometimes leave the car running for valid reasons -- pet in the car on a hot day, for example. But a horn honk if the remote wanders more than a few metres would be beneficial as a great reminder that, "Hey, you left your car running" reminder .
