Default Volt and TED 5000 - Problems?

Hello, I recently purchased the TED 5000 with 4 MTUs. I figured this would be a good place to post because there are other techy type TED users here. Today I installed the TED with just one MTU and pair of Clamps on the MAIN. Everything works and the MTU communicates to the gateway until I plugged in the Volt. When my Volt is charging it appears to kill the comminucation between the MTU and gateway. I see they sell an inline filter that installs in the breaker panel. Does this go in the circuit that is causing the noise/interference. Or does it install in the circuit that the MTU uses to communicate to the gateway. I haven't talked to the TED people yet because I figure other TED users with a Volt might have more experience. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have been using the TED 5000 for over a year now, no problems. I use only two MTU's, one at the volts sub panel and the other on the mains coming into the house. No Com problems on the ethernet over power line devices. Talk to the TED people, I think they may have the answer for you. Make sure your grounds in the panels are OK. Any power line filters that are near the MTU or the Ethernet interface unit will kill the signal. Could be that it is just making it to the network and then when you plug the car in it is enough to kill the signal to the network. I wish they had not picked Ethernet over power line. Wireless would have been a better choice. The ethernet over power line does add noise to the electrical system. Good luck let me know how you do or if I can answer any questions.

I had an issue with my new washer before I got my Volt. Just plugging in the washer (without turning it on) causes interference with my TED5000. I installed the inline filter on the same circuit that my MTU is on instead of the circuit that had the problem. I believe the instructions wanted it to be installed on the circuit that was causing the interference, but opted not to do it that way. My hopes were that it would block other interference from other circuits as well. It seemed to do the trick. Now that I have my Volt, I haven’t run into any interference issues when charging either. If anybody knows why I shouldn’t have done it that way, please let me know.

    Default Wiring the MTU

I have a TED with 3 MTUs - Two at the main panel which is a 400 amp split to two 200 amp.. one feeding a remote sub panel which has a solar system feeding it. I had all kinds of PLC problems. Here are some of my discoveries.

    1) the black wire on the MTU all need to be connected to the same phase on the power as the gateway. I have both red and back connected across the two phases. But the black signal seems to be stronger.

    2) On the system setting wizard (system layout) you can uncheck the "noise blanker" this appear to let the gateway hear more, but it also runs the error packet counter on the stats page.

If you are charging with a 120V charger make sure it is on a diferent phase than the blank MTU wire.

Also if you can connect the MTUs to the same circut as the gateway and keep the gateway as close to the MTUs as you can.

Also search the TED forums on PLC or Com problems.. there is a lot of good information.

    Good Luck.

I went one step further and made sure all the MTU black wires was hooked up to the breaker servicing the gateway, been rock solid ever since.

I have a TED5000 with 2 MTUs and a Volt. The Volt 110 charger and the TED Gateway are both on the same circuit, plugged into the same outlet. They both work fine with no interference.

Thanks for the help. I am using the Voltec 240v charging station when I loose communication between the MCU and gateway. I have not tried chairing with the 120v yet to see if it effects the TED. I did make a short two foot long power cord for the gateway and plugged the gateway and the MCU into a dedicated breaker. Still the same problem. I think I'll contact the TED people next.

    Default Works with portable 120v

I tried the portable 120 v plug and the TED MCU does communicate with the gateway while charging on 120v. The problem only happens while charging 240v. I suspect the Volt's built in charger is generating noise while charging 240v that is messing up TED communication. Hopefully the noise filter will correct this, otherwise I will not be able to monitor the Volt's energy usage.

What kind of wall unit do you have?
Where are you placing the MTUs?
Where are you wiring up the black wires on the MTUs?

How about some pictures of your setup?

I tried every combination I could think of. I tried wiring the MTU to the same breaker as the Voltec charging station taking case that the MCU black was on the correct phase as the gateway plug. I tried putting the MCU black on a dedicated breaker, again matching phase. I also tried using a two foot long power cord and physically placing the gateway right next to the MCU and hookng them to the same dedicated breaker and using a long Ethernet to connect the gateway to the router. Every time yeiled the same results, Communication good with no volt and communication bad when Volt is charging 240v. Communication good when charging 120v too.
