Talking Moving from MD to MN

We currently live in Gaithersburg, MD but will be moving to Saint Paul, MN on June 1. Our VW Golf hasn't run since Christmas so we are looking to replace it with the Volt.

How would the tax situation work if we buy in MD but file taxes while living in MN? MD has a state incentive but MN does not.

How would the move affect the federal incentive?

Also does anyone know of a good dealer in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area (I live across the street from Criswell so I know of a good dealer in MD)

One last thing, how does a person get a discount off MSRP (some have mentioned large reductions on the order of 5K)

    Thanks,

    Mike

To get the largest discount, order from Stingray and have delivered to your local dealer or buy from Stingray stock and have it transported to your home if you need it sooner than 2-3 months.

Fed tax credit makes no difference what state you live in, for your state, you would have to meet residency requires when you apply/file, typically that's 6 month +1 day, but only your state can give you a 100% answer

IANAL, this is just my understanding of the tax law... If the MD credit is set up as an income tax credit, then you should be able to take it against your income tax as a part-year resident of MD, wherever you are when you file - I don't know if it will be enough to get the full credit or not.

The move will have no impact on your federal incentive - it is a credit against your personal income tax, so it moves with you (if your salary/witholding changes, that'll obviously have an impact on your liability which may change how much rebate you can claim.)

Getting a discount off MSRP is a matter of asking enough dealers and negotiating well. (Not particularly my strong suit - they say contact the internet sales people from several dealers, be ready to walk out if they don't give you the deal you want.)

The Md. credit is Maximum $2,000.00 check from the MVA on the actual sales tax paid at purchase.Mine took about 45 days. I am pretty sure that you would have to title in Md. to get the sales tax credit. The federal credit is good no matter where you reside but you need $7,500.00 tax liability to get all of it. JBA chevy in Glen Burnie Md. has been advertising a loaded Volt with around $4,500.00off MSRP. There may be other dealers in Md. also willing to deal.

Some dealers are also doing the paperwork for the MD excise tax rebate for you. Koons in Tyson's collected the tax at the sale, but then sent me a refund check for the amount of taxes applicable to the purchase of the car which I guess was given back to them when they filed the registration and sales at the MD MVA.

Buy it in MD to get the excise/sales tax rebate. It comes pretty quick once the paperwork is filed.

I assume to get the Maryland credit you would have to register and title the car in MD, and then reregister the car in MN if you are staying there. That will eat into the benefit of getting the tax credit, although its probably still worth it unless you have to pay to transport the car to MN. The big discounts off MSRP are for loaded cars. Expect dealers to have less give on their cheaper Volts with fewer options.
You might start working internet deals in both places, to give you an idea of whether dealers in one area are more willing to come down in price.

Due to the fact that we would have to register, title, and insure in MD and then do the same in MN shortly after, we will buy in MN.

Thanks for the replies, we will post info on the car that we get.

This is the L2 charger we intend to get once we get a house. Anyone have one yet (I think it's new).

I bought my Volt at Criswell last November right off the lot--it has most, if not all, of the options. At the time, they were asking MSRP and weren't willing to negotiate, but things might have changed since then. As for the MD tax rebate, Criswell filled out the paperwork and gave me the rebate at purchase time, which knocked $2,000 off the final total (after tax, title, destination charges). I'm not exactly sure how that worked on their end, but it was fine with me. All things considered, I was happy with the experience.

BTW, I also went by Fitzgerald in Frederick a couple of times and they weren't willing to negotiate on the price either. I didn't buy from them mainly because neither of the two sales people I talked to knew anything about the state tax rebate, HOV lane access, etc. They had vague knowledge of the federal tax rebate, but insisted that you couldn't drive it solo in the HOV lanes. And when I tried to correct them they stood by their misinformation. They weren't rude by any means, just totally clueless. Anyway, that was enough to make me give up on them. Criswell also offered me a better deal on my trade-in, so that cinched it.

EDIT: Another thing about Fitzgerald that was a turn off was that when I tried to negotiate on the price, they kept steering me towards cheaper cars, as if the Volt was just an overpriced Cruze and if price was a concern I should get that instead. I don't think they understood that getting a good deal is independent of what someone can afford to pay.
