Default Successful AVCON to J1772 Conversion

While waiting for SPX to send someone, I did some research and found out that the old AVCON standard is electrically compatible with the new J1772 EVSE standard even though, mechanically, the 2 plugs are very different. I have also found successful AVCON to J1772 conversiona like that shown here.

Then, I remember about 12 years ago, when I rented the Ford Think City for a month (from Fremont BART station, for those in the SF Bay Area), I bought an used AVCON Powerpak EVSE to charge the Think at home. The AVCON has since been sitting in a box in the garage ever since. So, I bought a J1772 plug + cable from ebay for $190 last week.

I got a chance to swap out the old AVCON cable with the new J1772 cable this weekend. The EVSE self diagnostic showed green, when I powered it up. So, I proceeded to plug it into the Volt. The Volt honked, and I heard the relays click. It was charging from 240V!

So, this could be the cheapest way to get Level 2 charging at home if you can find old AVCON chargers that are being phased out.

Sure wish GM would let us tinkers have the cut off ends on the charge cords we exchanged.
