Reading this reminded me of a weekly TV show I record off RFD TV network- about trains. I think there is a masculine fascination with trains. However, too much of this show is devoted to the 'good old days' of steam. Watching these disgusting behemoths, I wonder why the term 'steam' (which sounds so clean) stuck and 'smoke' did not. While I love trains, and do not begrudge steam locomotives their place in history, I have no romantic notion of them. I see the filth belching out of these obsolete (restored) machines and want to choke (literally). Leave a couple in museums, and recycle the steel in all the others.

I hope we have learned something in the last hundred years- oil, grease and soot are not manly; they are carcinogenic. We used to put cocaine in our beverages, and have radiographic projectors for looking at the bones of our childrens feet when we bought them shoes. You will never hear the phrase 'the good old days' passing my lips, except with complete disdain.

...and strangely enough, the electric car is now the fascination, overwhelmingly, of men...so, maybe men have gotten smarter in the interim. [and I think I confirm that in my own mind watching all the Titanic stuff this month- about all that 'women and children first' stuff- so that the men remained on deck, and perishing, while half empty life boats lauched- with the families of those doomed men. Yup, they were stupid back then.]

Very interesting article. I enjoyed the period advertisement graphics as well. Thank you for posting!

I was at a course at Toronto Electric and the owner had one of those. It was pretty cool to see.

Regardless whether some in the anti-EV crowd see dirt, grease, grime, noise, and inefficiency as macho, they aren't. They are simply dirt, grease, grime, noise, and inefficient. Perhaps it simply took us 100 years to realize what great-grandma understood all those years ago! My wife is watching as I type this.... :-)
