I'm not sure that's true that all DTCs show an event or the trigger for the cause. or perhaps the manuals just don't explain it. I'm not inclined to fill in facts I don't know, but I still didn't feel the service individuals at the dealer were just trying to blow me off. I think they generally did not feel they had a lot to go on. So they felt more comfortable to let me keep the car. My frustration now is they can't take the car for one week, as there are 3 other Volts scheduled for service and they have only one certified technician. Plus, he said GM ony authorizes loaners (rentals) for 5 days.

I still wish GM provided Volts as loaners.

So because "DTCs have a cause..." the dealer tech should also be able to immediately find that cause? and if he can't look elesewhere? rediculous

The dealers have detailed documentation on every single DTC the Volt might exhibit, including enable and fail criteria and a detailed dianostic routine for each. When the OP said they didnt idenntify anything wrong MY point was that isnt so unusual if the fault was in any way conditional or intermittent. They may have contacted technical assistance, or possibly not. It's left up to the tech and shop foreman to decide if it's warranted. Most of the outstanding case data is available to them in bulletin format anyways, and they probably looked for a "hit" based on the DTC.(as I did, there's nothing happening on this particular DTC) Barring that, basically they would have just cleared the DTC, checked the related electrical connections that are associated to that specific DTC, and usually utilize any freeze frame and/or failure record data stored in order to establish the actual vehicle conditions present during the DTC failure in an attempt to recreate those condition. If the DTC does not fail, and continues to pass under the listed enable criteria then their hands are tied - NFF

They dont NEED to have a repeat failure in order to call GM, but if they cant seem to isolate despite it failing repeatedly, there may be something Volt technical assistance might suggest, or knows about that hasnt made it to bulletin status yet.
But even the best highly trained technicians can be stumped, however "dealer-hopping" generally is not a very good idea and should be only a last resort IMO.

    @ focher,

Sorry to hear your Volt has to go back in. We'll keep an eye on it and make sure our technical assistance team is on it again. Hopefully we will get to the bottom of this and get you back in your Volt without any further issues.

I just received this message while on a road trip. Almost 4000 miles and 3 months on this car. It doesn't seem to charge anymore. Hope this isn't a common issue. Guess I better fill up the tank

Were you recently using a public charging station by any chance? or had your charge interrupted by a power outage?

I was actually just sitting in a parking lot When it occurred. Had it in the dealership today, they indicate the root cause was a loose wire. Hopefully no more loose wires high voltage or any other kind. It hadn't been at a public charge station in the prior 24 hours.

I dropped off my Volt this morning at Bud Kouts in Lansing, Michigan due to the same error message reading "Service High Voltage Charging System" and vehicle not charging...

Well dropped off my '13 with the "Service High Voltage..." warning. While the advisor was nice, he did call to say it was a coolant leak and it appeared to be caused by a "rock" but that they were covering it. I find the rock theory to be BS and he is just using it to create good-will towards the dealership like they are doing me a favor. From everything I have read and seen on the Volt, it would be near impossible for a "rock" to cause a leak. I suspect this is more of a known issue. Still love my Volt just can't stand bs excuses. Just be straight up and admit it is a problem. We are early adopters and have expectations that there can be issues. Don't insult us.

Agree you have an important problem. If you would review other owners who have had similar problems there appears to be a problem of a coolant tank at the front left side. Others have stated a hole created by a rock and some have hit a rebar sticking up from a bumper bar. It isn't necessarily a bs excuse. Sounds like the dealer and GM are going above and beyond.
