Unable To Charge The Vehicle At A Remote Location?

The 120 Volt Charge cord set (as known as Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) needs to be plugged into a dedicated 15 amp or greater grounded electrical receptacle. If the customer is using an electrical receptacle (AC Outlet) from an unknown source (such as a hotel or motel), the charge receptacle may not be dedicated or may have some type of ground fault that would prevent the vehicle from being charged. When this occurs, both fault indicators on the 120 volt charge cord set may flash red and the charge status indicator will be yellow. The charge cord set is built to try to recover after a calibrated time period if it detects a ground fault with its electrical power source and then it may attempt to try to charge the vehicle again and it may charge ok for a certain period of time until the charge cord set see a ground fault again.

If you experience this concern, please don't replace the charge cord set or any charger related parts on the vehicle. This may be a normal concern due to the condition of the charge receptacle or wiring at remote locations.

Some of the items below may be suggested to the customer when using a charge receptacle at remote locations.

    1. Do not use an extension cord to extend the length of the charge cord set.

    2. Disconnect the charge cord set from the vehicle and the AC outlet and retry the procedure again using the reduced voltage mode.

    3. Try a different AC outlet at the remote location.

    That actually needs more information.

    1. its ok to have an extra cord of the correct type wire gauge.

    2. we set the amps not the voltage with the selection mode. 8 amp or 12 amps

    3. Yep always good info - but how about keeping $5 plug tester in the car before risking your charger to any 120 volt outlet.
they will test for incorrect wires and missing ground wire for a little more you can see the voltage.

Hopefully an isolated case. Picked up my replacement charge unit from dealer this past friday(4/6/12). The unit worked fine for two days. The third day the flashlight portion would stay on and not shut off. Unable to charge the car. I went to my dealership this morning and they confirmed that the charge unit was defective and give me a replacement.

Did the new units solve the Problem? My volt is one week old. After 4 days Started tripping breaker. Switched outlet and now fter 15 minutes of attempting to charge, the red fault lights on the charge unit flash and the car horn "chirps". Error message says "charge interrupted. Cords re not hot.
Calling dealer Monday. hoping new charging unit in stock!

This sounds alot like there maybe an issue with the utility. If you replacement does the same thing start checking the line voltage. It could also be a poor neutral line back to the transformer.

There is a recall on the Voltec 120 volt charger. Take it back to the dealer.
