Default Did your Volt come with any free minutes for OnStar calls?

Just wondered - as my "new" car had 187 miles on it and no OnStar minutes at all. Two years ago I bought a USED GM car, and when we activated OnStar we received some number of "demo" calling minutes...

Nope, you have to buy minutes to use it as a phone, but you get free OnStar service for 3 years

When I activated my OnStar they gave me a choice of two cheap packages. I chose 300 minutes for something like $10. You had to choose right then to get the deal.

Right - get as many as you possibly can at the intro price, it's a super deal compared to what they stick you with later on. And they don't roll over forever either. I think they last one year, use 'em or lose 'em.

I paid $5 for 61 minutes on my Volt. I don't see myself ever needing it really but it was a just in case.

The minutes are "use 'em or lose 'em" in 12 months from when you buy them, but the balance rolls over if you buy more. Whenever you buy more, the rolling 12 months starts over.

The interesting thing is that if OnStar decides they want to reward you for something, say you have a OnStar problem and the technical team takes a week or two to solve it, then they want to do something nice for you to keep you a happy camper. The "something nice" tends to be "here's a 100 free minutes." Bingo, all of your minutes + 100 are good for another 12 months.

I started with 300 on March 25, 2011. I now have 473 minutes that expire 11/9/12. They "did something nice" twice.

They also gave me 100 minutes for a late monthly report that I complained nicely about 3 times. I think when I rolled off the dealers lot it only had 1 intro minute.
