<<Its a start but we've got a long way to go to oil independance. 15000 gallons equates to 357 barrels a day. We still import about 9,000,000 barrels a day. 15000 gallons a day also equates to $50,000 per day staying in the US economy.>>
....that create US jobs not only making cars but in the utility industry, electricians, and down the road a LOT of jobs in every aspect of our economy to build new, distribution, transmission, and power plants! The ripple affect will be stunning at some point if you keep 'energy' money in the US.
The only negative effect will be for the roads. With less gasoline being sold, there will be less tax collected for federal, state, and local coffers. Of course this is a problem I would like to see. I wonder if this could lead to taxing based on miles driven, instead of gasoline used. Washington State added a $100/year tax for EVs.
Well I'm doing my part. I figure I am saving 2-3 gallons / day as I am averaging 60 EV miles / day.

I really like this idea. It is similar to what Apple just made a big deal about; their passing 25 billion apps downloaded. Apple got a lot of very positive press about this. Apple had a ticker on their website tracking the count up to 25 billion. Since OnStar has data from our Volts, they could easily put up a ticker updated daily reflecting the total EV miles driven by Volts. They could also calculate the gallons saved, tons of CO2 saved and even an estimate of dollars saved (cost of gas saved *current average gas price - KWh used * average KWh cost).
This could be really easily done with data already available and very powerful to explain to the masses how a Volt saves you money as well as being green, supporting the US economy, etc., etc., etc.
If this can't/won't be done my OnStar, maybe Mike could consider adding this to VoltStats.net.
