Default NAV and RADIO seem to be misconnected

This 2012 is equipped with just about all options. Audio components are labeled Bose...

When NAV is providing audio guidance to a destination, the RADIO cannot be separately controlled. If I change the volume control, both NAV and RADIO are effected equally. Obviously, I cannot hear the instructions.

When the RADIO and NAV are both turned off and I press the NAV button on the dash, both NAV and RADIO turn on.

I don't think that's what was intended. Did I miss a configuration or control option, or is there a malfunction?

I don't think I've ever said this but .... Do a search! LOL

I'm just saying this and laughing because this is the way and works. Many of use have complained. Some within a day of owning the car. Hopefully they'll fix this but that's not happening anytime soon. FYI it's the same on other GM products. Why anyone ever thought that when you turn on the light switch the faucet should start running is a little beyond me but that's more or less what has happened. No doubt there is a white paper somewhere on why this makes sense.

    Huh?!?!
I've had other cars with integrated GPS+radio, and have ridden in or rented many more, but have never encountered this issue.

It's incredible that when GPS wants to issue an instruction there's no automatic mute of the radio. And it's equally incredible that I cannot turn off the radio without turning off the GPS.

That combination of faults makes a very costly option combination almost useless.

I will visit the dealership and complain, and if I'm told that this is a problem with the entire class of Volt cars, or GM cars, I won't simply grin and bear it.

Maybe there's something in the config menu? My car definitely cuts the radio way down (not sure it's a true mute) when it makes a Nav announcement.

I know the Nav and radio volumes are set separately - you should be able to set each from the config menu, or the console knob will control whatever is on right now (radio when just the radio is playing, Nav when an announcement is playing.)

There are a couple buttons to mute the radio when you want (one on the steering wheel,) and also a pause button for HDD/iPod - which is why I've never understood why people are upset that they can't "turn off" the radio with the Nav on - especially since DashDAQ shows that the power flow from the APM doesn't change when you turn the two "off" with the console button - so a muted radio is just as much an off radio as hitting the power button on the pair.

Not sure if your Volt is a 2012 model or not... But my 2012 model does have independent control of the navigation voice vs the radio volume. Also... My volt does "tuck" the volume of the radio while the navigation is speaking.

There are a couple of ways to adjust the nav volume. You can wait for the nav to speak and adjust the radio volume control while it is speaking... This will adjust the nav volume. (Not the radio.) When the nav is NOT speaking the volume control adjusts the radio volume.

Method 2: Look in the vehicle settings menu. You can adjust the navigation volume there. I believe there is a volume tuck feature you can enable as well.

Read the Navigation & radio manual. (This is separate from your main car manual.)
