That's more than "something's gone awry" -- that's a fundamental flaw in the way OnStar treats sensitive data. Passwords, under absolutely no circumstances, should be stored by ANY company. To pass even the most rudimentary security audit, passwords must always be "hashed" -- which means they can tell if you type the same one again but its not possible to determine what it is without brute force trial-and-error. The fact that they clearly don't tells you something about how OnStar handles sensitive personal information.

That's *really* scary given that they demonstrate a complete lack of basic security in their system and they have access to everyone's car. (If passwords aren't stored hashed, then any compromise of their network can potentially leak not only your personal information, but your password... do the math. If someone steals that and has both your password, personal information and the address your car happens to be parked most of the time ...)

Everyone I talked gave me a different answer: When I would call from my Volt, the On-Star tech would say I should go to the website and delete my destinations. When I would get on the website (and couldn't find my 'hidden' destination list - thanks for the link guys!), AND call a rep from in my house, they would tell me that I had to go to my Volt and call On-Star tech support. One tech even told me that I should try to put different destination name in, even though I told him I had tried that 100 times. I responded, "Well, I guess I could do it a 101 times, if you think that would work." He understood my frustration.

After reading this thread, and using the double-secret web link, I am finally able to send google destinations to my car again.

GM-Volt writers are the best!! On-Star needs to read this thread!
Well, it's been an ongoing issue for my account since the problem first surfaced back in late Feb. Many Tech calls, many "resets", "Refreshes", and such, but no fix.

Finally tonight after deleting my saved maps and sending just one from Google maps. I tried tech support again . Whatever this last tech support person did worked. Perhaps deleting my 5 maps and replacing them with one helped. Anyway instead of getting an error or dead air when requesting Virtual Advisor, I got the old "I see you have a saved map would you like to download it?" response. I did and it did, hooray!

They may have fixed something in general. I have not been able to use the Virtual Advisor after sending a map to my car from mapquest/google for awhile. I can from my ipod (works well and is automatic - few minutes turning on the car it downloads). As well, obviously, from the OnStar button they just send it to my car and that's COOL.

Anyhow sent a map to Fry's the other day from mapquest to try it out and it worked!!!

ASIDE: Went to Fry's to get an on sale 32GM flash drive for $20 for Volt music! Drove there to find out they were out. Got a 30 day raincheck. Was I bummed. Nope. Nice to take a quick ride away from work and probably only cost me $0.25 !

Check the VIN plate. There's one in the bottom left corner of the windshield, and one in the driver's door jamb. It's also on your registration. Early cars all display the number in the center stack during the power up sequence, no idea if newer cars do, or if different radio options do or not...

So it's just the first letter and following 4 numbers? Cause the VIN # is much longer than what everyone else is displaying

B,C, and D signify the model year, mine is a 2011, so B. The 5 digits at the end are the serial number. There were less than 10,000 2011's produced, so they just need 4 digits... (Aside from some anomalous 2011 S/N's that look like 99XXX.)
