I love this forum , I would hate to see it closed down because of Copyrighted Material.

The reason I am posting this is I saw someone post a thread on this forum that could possibly cause this forum to be shut down, or cost it a big hunk of money

I belong to a lot of forums (mostly gun) but have been spend a lot of my time here since I got the Volt.
All the forums have a warning regarding Copyrighted Material.

I made a copy of the waring posted on the S&W forum (I am good terms with the owner and Have visited him at his house and I doubt he would mind me posting his warning) as a example of a policy guide line that can be implemented here

    =======================================

The following is from the S&W forum

    Copyrighted Material
It has become evident that there is a new business in the USA. That business is the generation of cash awards from judgements over copyright infringement.

Companies have been formed that purchase the copyrights to materials posted on news and newspaper sites, and then simply search the net for examples of that material posted without permission.
The lines between fair usage and infringement can be vague, and, ultimately, determined by a trial jury.

So, we must now take this course:
Do NOT post copyrighted material on this board.
    None.
Not a single sentence from another website or printed material.

Remember, the whole point of these new companies is the generation of cash. Two week old newspaper articles don't usually have any intrinsic value, so this is just a money generating scheme. The news sites benefit from the sale of the rights to tomorrow's "old news", and the new companies benefit from litigation.
These companies usually go directly to filing a suit without issuing a 'cease and desist' request.

We simply won't be caught in this game.
The Rules have been edited to say this very plainly.
DON'T post it if it is copyrighted.
If you see copyrighted material posted, PLEASE report it.
If you have posted copyrighted material, please edit your post to remove it.
If your post of copyrighted material was quoted, please report that post so we can edit it.

You can expect older threads and posts containing copyrighted material to be deleted.

From this day forward, Warnings and Infractions will be issued for posting copyrighted material.
Sorry, folks, but you can expect us to take a FIRM stance on this issue.

    Also be aware of this-
If this board suffers any legal fees due to copyrighted material YOU post, we will make a reasonable effort to recover those costs from YOU.

I you had read my entire post you would have seen that I know the owner of the site personally and I have been to his house. If I was not personally acquainted with the owner of the site I would not have used his comments as an example, as I said I belong to a few gun forums and all have the same policy, but lee is the only forum owner I am personally acquainted with.

Rather than sidetrack the issue at hand I believe we should consider the implications. There are many people that are anti guns, therefore they can be a target people for of internet sites some people may want to silence, and Volt also has it enemies therefore there may be some people that may also want to silence people that are telling the truth about our cars.

Every owner of the gun forums I belong to that this seriously, IMO it would be wise to treat the issue seriously.

This should be clarified it it is not covered elsewhere already. The may be covered in general by standard copyright laws already on what parts may be used (i.e. snippets). I think this has been pointed out in the past.

There is a policy statement at the bottom of the forum page.

I have been a member of numerous gun forums for the last decade and it was never an issue till about 6 to 12 months ago when they all posted warnings and strictly enforced the copyright policy by deleting threads. I do not know the reason for the sudden change but the issue is being taken seriously on gun forums (maybe other forums). When I post information I usually give a short description of the article and post a link.

There may be as many anti Volt people as there are anti gun people that would be happy to see forums like this go out of business. Why take the risk when simply posting a link instead of posting the entire article will eliminate any risk?

I just read the link that Scott posted (dated Nov 19, 2011), it appears that things have changed recently.
I personally will continue to do what I have been doing in the past and just post a description with a link

I am going to close this thread.

The information above is NOT fact. It is a law they are trying to pass but is not currently a law. This forum follows CURRENT law.

If you post materiel that is copied from elsewhere just make sure to post the URL.
