Default First eREV Pickup Truck, SUV and Van by VIA Motors

    PRESS RELEASE
    Dec. 20, 2011, 4:04 p.m. EST
Bob Lutz to Announce World's First eREV Pickup Truck, SUV and Van by VIA Motors at Detroit Auto Show

DETROIT, MI, Dec 20, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- VIA Motors announced today that Bob Lutz, former Vice Chairman of General Motors and father of the Chevy Volt, will introduce the world's first extended range electric Pickup Truck, SUV and Van, in a press conference at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 12:15 pm EST.

"VIA Motors has developed the first extended range electric powertrain capable of replacing the V8 engine. It was my great privilege to introduce the Chevy Volt, and it will be a great honor to introduce the world's first line of eREV Trucks, Vans and SUVs by VIA Motors."

"This new breed of full size utility vehicles can deliver the power and performance of a V8, with better fuel economy than many smaller cars, by driving on electricity for about $2 a day," adds Alan Perriton, Chief Operations Officer for VIA Motors, and himself a former GM senior executive. "It actually costs less to own and operate a clean VIA electrified truck or SUV than a gas truck," added Perriton.

In addition to the full size Pickup Truck, VIA will unveil two exciting new eREV vehicles at the North American International Auto Show: a full size, four wheel drive SUV, and a three-quarter-ton, full-size Cargo Van at its booth on the main floor of the show. Like VIA's eREV truck, all three vehicles can drive 30 to 40 miles on advanced, non-flammable, lithium ion batteries, then up to 400 miles using the onboard generator, averaging up to 100 mpg.

Fleet sales in 2012, individuals in 2013. Sounds promising, but a year+ out.

Thanks Scott! I enjoyed the Market Watch article quite a bit.

My wife and I are excited to be going to the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. We are looking forward to the GM and Via displays, salivating over the concept cars, and taking a look at the future technologies General Motors will be introducing.

Never heard of Via. Why doesn't GM or Ford have an EREV coming out? Seems like a no brainer.

You caught the part about secondary production, right? I'm thinking that come January, we'll find out that VIA has a relationship to GM similar to Ford and Azure Motors, and that the VIA vehicles are GM models converted to EREV power trains.

Either way, I'm looking forward to see them. I still think EREV is the best answer for at least the next decade, and possibly beyond. I'm not convinced I need a full-size SUV, but anything that increases public adoption means I'm one step closer to what I would like in cars...

Great Post! Now shot over to www.twitter.com/AmazingChevVolt. Have posted a zillion Amazing Chevy Volt posts to twitter in the last 72 hours with links to Volt Owner Stories, GM Tech Posts, YouTube Volt Videos, Hyper Miler-How to videos,Auto Blogs and now this link to the Bob Luts presentation at the upcoming North American International Auto Show.

Perhaps the most informative and, as shawn hanity likes to say, "terrifying" aspect of this story is this passage....

"VIA Motors has developed the first extended range electric powertrain capable of replacing the V8 engine. It was my great privilege to introduce the Chevy Volt, and it will be a great honor to introduce the world's first line of eREV Trucks, Vans and SUVs by VIA Motors."

Does this say, "REPLACE THE V8 ENGINE?" If true and the technology can come to mass market then this is really scary stuff to big oil....really is scary stuff. Can it be possible that the brilliant EREV technology that came to concept in the height of General Motors so called death spiral from 2006 to 2008 now can be eventually be massed produced and render the "GOD Standard" V8 obsolete? Naw, can't be.....Or can it.....
