Not sure what to make of this piece from Henry Payne of The Detroit News:
It is hard to believe that the production of batteries is as bad as or worse for the environment than fracking, petroleum refining and it's air pollution, oil spills, etc. Guess I'll have to spend more time over on Fox in order to get my head around this topic...

There have been many forecasts of possible rolling blackouts in California this summer due to a shortage of power from the shutdown of the San Onofre nuclear power plant and the instability of a green power grid due to hourly weather fluctuations.
But the most likely scenario for California for the summer of 2013 is electricity price shock, especially for those moderate-income households that run air conditioners during the hot days in the Central Valley of California.

The first time I heard of Darrell Issa was when he told the world that Volts were exploding fireballs that nobody wanted to buy at the witch hunt for NHTSA. I read up on him and his biography and found he could EASILY be in prison instead of Congress. Later, I watched his venom pour in lots of different directions, including insuring he could do everything possible to hold up the aid to Sandy victims just so he could make Obama look bad. The man is a menace of the worst sort. Well, at least the AG got to properly label him as shameful during the hearings today. The fact that this fairly insignificant item even made it to the headlines may reveal the level of disgust that America has with this man.

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2...-demeanor?lite

I normally avoid reading comments on articles, but this time I did, just so I could see what other people thought of Issa. It turns out that a great many of us would like him removed from Congress. But until us poor folks can afford to live in his nirvana-by-the-sea district, we are stuck with the SOB. The 1%ers will keep him in Washington and filling our airwaves with vitriol. Or we work on a Constitutional Amendment to let the rest of us vote OUT people who interfere with the productivity of the Congress at large. (I guess I think about nirvana more than most)

Sign this petition:

Fleet Vehicle Purchases - North American made PHEV or BEV only

The administration should issue an executive order requiring all federal agencies to replace all passenger fleet vehicles with Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) or Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) with in the next five years. All PHEV and BEV vehicles purchased shall be assembled in North America with at least 51% North American made parts. All federal facilities and rest stops on Interstate Highways shall have charging stations for federal fleet vehicles and federal charging stations shall employ solar PV canopies where practical.

This policy insures that federal vehicle use will not worsen our national dependence on imported oil, reduce pollution and reduces fuel costs for federal operations.

The more he works in the energy business, the more I lose some respect for him. The clear misleading tactic is for these guys to state "America can become energy independent". No, it would be North American Energy Independent but most media forget to qualify that. We would still need to import the same amount from Canada and Mexico and perhaps central America too. Also, some of these guys start to say that America can become a net oil exporter. No way will that ever happen. They are trying to mislead the public and that's wrong.

From the article: "Thus, the “Volt”, by my estimate, is either close to “variable break-even” or may be on the cusp of a positive gross margin."

I think they will be able to do even better profit-wise in the coming years with this technology.

Have they also considered the image improvement of Chevrolet that the Volt has done? Building a great car that customers love. We have also seen actual examples here of people going to buy a Volt, but ending up purchasing something else like a Cruze or Spark, possibly for financial or other reasons.

I ran across this article today on the Wall Street Journal Web site:

Welcome to General Tso's Motors

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...pinion_LEADTop

-- the gist of the article is that GM is basically starting the process of moving its R&D and manufacturing base to China, with an eventual aim of exporting cars made in China back to the U.S. Market.

This will come as a great surprise to those (like me) who supported the GM bailout for the purpose of keeping our U.S. based auto industry.

One of the reasons I bought a Chevy Volt was to support GM in its efforts to rebuild as an AMERICAN manufacturer.

Although we love the car, I have to say that if I'd known what GM is doing now, I would not have bought this car. I'm very disappointed in GM.

What do all of you think about this?
