Sounds like with a revived economy, truck sales will be surging. With little truck electrification in sight, I guess the gas we save will be burned by our neighbors with their trucks. At least the new silverados will have slightly more efficient engine choices. A truck going from 12mpg to 15mpg would be a 25% improvement. Why can't the big three come out with a nice small truck or even an el camino type of hauler? So many pickups on the road out there are driving around with empty cargo beds.

With a 15.2 gallon tank, that comes out to 59.2 MPG, so this could be the best five-passenger non-hybrid vehicle in the world!
As I see it, GM could add the Diesel engine option on future EREVs, and we can also make home-brewed Diesel fuel from vegetable oils, so the new GM EREVs can be the cleanest vehicles on the road.

Go, GM!

This is my "what came first, the chicken or egg?" post.

I was talking with a director of a sustainability school today about charging stations at the college and it came up that once they installed the four L2 plugs at the university, one of his faculty members bought a Volt. Imagine that - someone determined that once they had charging at work, they could better-afford an EV. In fact, he has a plan to get as many as 40 charging points throughout campus eventually. (it's a private college of 15,000 enrolled... if that matters)

This helps me with the theory that people will buy EVs when they have an opportunity to charge "At Work" and not "out in public" (the mall, etc.) When you commute somewhere every day, an at-work charger to give you gas-free miles makes purchase of an EV far more compelling. The EV advocacy should dissuade these "for fee public chargers" and get them going at workplaces (like out in California).

What I think GM should do is offer a redeemable certificate of $1K for each Volt buyer as a matching fund for their workplace to put in at least a dual-port EVSE (L2 or otherwise). One for the Volt buyer and one for "the next guy" to pay it forward. Perhaps the first Volt owner gets someone to go to the same dealership and get their own Volt and then they can plug in at work alongside. It's a "proliferation idea". Rather than having GM wait for people to decide on their own, they would help create the egg to "hatch" a new EV buyer (Volt, ELR, Spark EV...) Maybe brand it with a marketing sticker so it's not just hatching new Leaf drivers. Of courses, businesses also have the EVSE tax credit and also some states offer matching funds and other rebates too.

I believe that more available chargers at work (whether business parking lot, parking garage, college or elsewhere) the more EVs will be sold. It seems that many facility managers want to wait for people to buy the EVs first and see what the demand is. That's like waiting for the fish to jump out of the water and then go fishing. Here, installing the chargers is like baiting a fish hook, casting and then drawing them in. It gets people off the fence and out there considering how leasing a Leaf, Volt or whatever could work with at-work charging.

Any thoughts or alternatives on the chargers-lead-to-sales idea?

I am the general director for Electric Drives and Electrification Systems Engineering at General Motors. I need to disabuse you of the mistaken notion that this motor has less than 400 ftlb of Torque. The Spark EV motor is designed and manufactured by GM. This motor makes 540 Nm (402 ftlbf) of Torque at stall and out to about 2000 rpm. This is not gear- multiplied axle torque, but actual motor shaft torque.

The very high torque is motor performance that we are very proud of, and customers will notice the difference: (It has a gear reduction of 3.18 to 1, so the axle torque is the product of these two). This is a very low numerical reduction ratio, which has several great benefits – 1) Feels much better to drive. 3.18:1 is less than half of the reduction of all other EVs. This makes for extraordinarly low driveline inertia, less than 1/5 of the driveline inertia of the Nissan Leaf and 1/4 that of the Fiat 500 EV. Their cars feel like you are driving around in second gear all day long; ours feels like fourth gear. 2) Lower gear mesh, spinning losses, and lower high speed electromagnetic losses mean very high drive unit efficiency. The Spark EV efficiency from DC current to delivered Wheel torque is 85% averaged over the city driving schedule and 92% when averaged over the highway schedule. This is the highest in the industry, and that is one of the reasons why the Spark EV sets the benchmark for most efficient car.

Back of the envelope calc shows constant motor torque of 402 ft-lb from 0-2000 RPM motor speed = 153 HP at 2,000 RPM. Looks consistent with other specs. Considering the weight, it is now clear why this little guy will really have some get-along and a sub-8 second 0-60 time:)

If this is consistent with other future GM EV offerings, sales will be as much for the "grin" factor as energy efficiency.
