: Is it possible to make the screen on the center stack go blank while driving?

I thought about this today driving home from work. With the touchscreen on my current car I can make the display screen go blank but can have the radio or climate control running in the background. I thought about when I get my Volt if I can do this as sometimes I like to turn the screen off. I could not find anything in the Volt manual. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Turning the dimmer wheel to the left of the steering column is the only way I know. But that will affect both LCD displays, not what you are looking for and likely dangerous to some degree.

@ BlackVolt,

I do not believe so, and I believe that Steverino is correct and the only way is the dim wheel. I will look further in to this and confirm it once I find out for sure.

Had to go downstairs to check my memory (the stairs in the cottage aren't quite as bad as shipborne, but they motivate me to avoid gratuitous trips :- ). Once you have up and running what you want (radio, climate, probably nav but you'd just be running on voice prompt), simply hit Config->Display->Off.

That turns the display off until the next time you hit a button on the center console.

Okay I wrong. I wasn't sure because I've never actually tried it myself. But I guess you can turn the display off. I talked with a few of my fellow Volt Advisors and we discussed it and found that it can be done. The steps Rusty mentioned in his post are correct (Thank you Rusty!).

Hey, we are ALL learning here! I had to go down to the car and try it myself to make sure I was remembering correctly, and I'm gonna guess they don't have a Volt sitting in the lounge at your office :- )

I know I've certainly learned far more from reading the forums here than I have from the owners manual or from owning and driving the car. For a car that's "just like any other car, only electric", there's a LOT to be learned about this car!

@ Rusty,

We actually do have a Diamond White Tricoat Volt downstairs, which has been a big help in answering a lot of customer questions. I was actually about to go down and check out the display screen and mess around with it, and then another advisor pointed out to me that it could be shut off until a center console button was pushed.

I have to agree with you, there is a lot to be learned about this car. I spent weeks in training learning about it and I still learn new things all of the time.

You wouldn't happen to know the VIN, would you? Does it start with a 9, or is it in the 103xxx series?

Thanks Rusty. And thanks Trevor for confirming this. I will experiment with this when I get my Volt. Really cant wait.

Off the top of my head, no. We have had it since before the initial launch so I have to imagine it starts with a 9.
