: New Upholstery

Because my car was ordered by someone else, who canceled his order, it wasn't quite what I would have ordered. It had no backup camera, no parking assist sensors, no seat heaters. And it had black cloth upholstery.

Though I find cloth upholstery more comfortable than leather, we have a short-haired black-and-white dog. The dog sheds, and the fur burrows itself deep into cloth upholstery. Since we've had this dog, leather is clearly preferred. I've never really liked black upholstery, either: too hot in the summer.

When I bought the car, I discussed the upholstery situation, and reupholstering was part of the deal we cut.

Classic Soft Trim did the work, and I am extremely pleased with the results. Thanks to a reasonable sense of color on my wife's and daughter's parts, we matched the upholstery to the headliner (a color Classic Soft Trim calls "Ash"). We also considered red leather, matching the car's paint color, but I felt that wasn't really right for a car like a Volt; moreover, adding one more color to the interior (already black, brushed metal, white [from the center console], and light gray-beige [headliner]) would have been too much.

While we were at it, I asked if seat heaters could be added. Indeed, yes; though they couldn't be tied into the car's climate control system (and cannot, therefore, be part of the pre-heating), they work wonderfully. We also installed seat heaters in the back, with the switches in the well in front of the rear cup holders.

My daughter, who is the most frequent rear seat passenger, was quite pleased upon learning of the addition.

Do they have engineered airbag blast stitching?

Very nicely done. Did you consider doing a two-toned look? That U-shaped 'swoop' in the seat back done to match the dark console color could have looked cool too.

Awesome! Looking forward to seeing this work in person. I can't tell my son about the rear seat heaters, tho...

Yes. While waiting for Classic Soft Trim to get the pattern (it took a bunch longer than expected), I checked out their Web site and considered other material and finishes, stitching options, and color schemes. I decided to keep it simple, in line, really, with the philosophy of matching the headliner's color.

Exactly. That was a little part of the delay: it's not just simple tailoring.

Thanks. Actually, the price of the leather reupholstering per se was pretty similar to that of the leather interior. It's not quite the same (e.g., I didn't do change anything on the steering wheel: its covered with a vinyl-like material similar in texture, etc. to the top of the dash [might even be the same stuff]), but it took care of the actual need.

Thanks! Enjoyed lunch with you.
