:) just wandering how many processors is home to (30 million lines of code I have heard there was) the software. Does each control module have it's own. How are they coordinated? Is there a separate CPU for each module? I started to wonder, since my mp3 player hung up, and rebooting and up grading software did not fix it. they had to erase the files on the HDD. I did get all the latest upgrades 10 of them.

I do not know for the Volt how the processing is distributed. However, the Wikipedia article on the CAN bus has a pretty good general description on how cars are controlled these days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN_bus

Les Lest, the Volt has ~27 primary modules, all networked and each with their own software so the processor workload is somewhat distributed and grouped in various subnets. I posted a complete list of these modules in this thread:
http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread.php?5328-Volt-Diagnostic-Tool
Basically they are coordinated by a couple gateway modules and the message heiarchy built into the Controller Area Network (CAN) in which GM-LAN is based.
Most all of these modules are programmable using flash ROM memory to alterations to the firmware/software can be performed by techncians when GM creates updates. When you take you Volt into a GM dealer, they can connect to the network via the 16-pin data link connector/s under your instrument panel, which once connected to GM's world-wide servers a detection process will determine what level of operating system and software in present in the various modules and inform the technician if an update is available.
