: "Open Door" ding happens when I shut the door, and then also when I lock it.

Last night I got home from being out with some friends, and I heard the "open door" ding sound chime 3 times after I had shut the car off and shut the door. I plugged in, and then hit the lock button on my fob and I heard it chime 3 more times. I also noticed the blue power light was still blinking as I walked away. So I unlocked, opened and shut all the doors again to make sure nothing was open, and then locked again. Seemed ok, but I just went out for an errand and it made the same chime when I locked it again. No blue power button this time thankfully, but does anyone know what could be causing that?

Have you forgotten the extra fob inside the car?

Nope, it has always been in a drawer in my room. This is the first time I've heard it in the 3 months I've had the car, hehe. I just went and check again, got in, started it, shut down, and closed the door and locked, and it didn't make the noise this time. Strange.

Could the spare "fob" be in the car? It alarms if it detects a fob in the car because it thinks that you are about to lock yourself out. That happened to me a couple of times the first day I had the Volt. Sorry if that sounds too simple minded, but it did happen to me.

Noel, it CAN'T be "simple minded" if we both thought of it at the same time. :)

Michael,

LOL. Literally. Thanks. Have a great weekend.

BTW, did your car show up? I got a sense from a recent comment of yours that it had.

Noel, yes I put a brief note in "Tracking Your Volt Order," and in "Texas Deliveries."
We drove it home from Amarillo, TX yesterday. I'm "teaching" my wife "how to drive" today. It's going pretty well so far. She likes Low setting and also the backup camara.

Did you read my cargo net explanation on the other thread? I misspoke a little about where the loops are for the horizotal arrangement. They are acually near the floor, not on the floor. I'll go back and edit the comment.

If so, then this chime is normal when you initially lock the doors (but they dont actually lock) but then they will LOCK a few seconds after the last door (or hatch) is closed. It's set in the "vehicle settings" menu. Perhaps someone else changed it on you??

Thanks, WOT. It's going really well. The Voltec unit works perfectly. I've spent time with the wife plugging ang unplugging. (Humorous note: I let her unplug it and then helped her hang the cord up. I got in the passenger side and she got in the driver's seat. Notice any missing steps? When she turned it on, or put it in gear, I forget which, the Volt very clearly told us to close the charge port door. I took responsibility for forgetting to tell her about that, but it was a learning expereince.) We are managing to avoid scraping going in and out of the driveway abouit half of the time.

You unplug and the first instinct is to roll up the cord and stow it (in the case of the 120V) OR get it coiled onto the wall (240V) and the charge door just loses it's priority LOL. Need to get in the habit of closing the door IMMEDIATELY after you disconnect the J1772 connector.
The scraping noise is more annoying than it is damaging, I suggest you just tune it out. ;)
Again, congrats. Looking forward to hearing your driving impressions and experiences here on gm-volt.com

Michael,

Not to worry. When we had our Impala SS it scraped the spoiler every time going in and out of the present driveway for 3 years, plus many other miscellaneous locations for 15 years, with no real ill effects. It scraped the tailpipes too. Irritating, but no real problem. Just don't drive it over parking lot bumpers because it will hang up on same and do some damage backing out. And even if you damage the flexible air dam, it isn't that expensive to replace. It happens all the time on Corvettes. NBT.

I will check the other thread for your coment on the net.

Congratulations BTW. Enjoy indeed! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy IMHO.

Nope, delayed lock is off. It seems to have stopped now. I'll keep an eye on it and see if it happens again. It was just really strange to be walking to my front door and still hearing the 3 chimes. It did finally stop, but I just hadn't seen it do that in 3 months and was puzzled.

MichaelH,

My first reply disappeared somewhere, so here's the short version.

WOT has it right about the scraping. Our Impala SS did it every time for 15 years. Aside from the bottom edge of the air dam looking a little raggedy, no serious damage. And they're a wear item anyway, and relatively cheap to replace. We do it all the time on Corvettes. Just try not to drive it over parking lot bumpers. It can hang up and do some serious damage when you back out.

Oh great, now it shows up. Oh well 2 replies are better than none I suppose.

Congrats, Michael, I don't own a Volt yet but most of the cars I have owned will rub the front dam if we go straight out of the driveway but if we angle at the hump it usually does not scrape at all.

That's why I said 50 %. We are trying to do the angle routine. Thanks for the comment.

For the first (and second) time in three months I managed to back it out of the driveway with out scrapping the front end! I just have to start turning hard before the rear tires get to the sidewalk (about 5 feet from the curb).

Gonna take some getting used to...

Sometimes when I approach the car, unlock it with the fob, and open the door, I hear 4 dings. I don't see anything different when I get into the car and the dings don't happen every time. Any idea why the four ding sounds?

Edit: I figured it out. It dings (not the horn) four times when I put my gym bag in the cargo area with my keys inside the bag when returning to my car. I shut the hatch and nothing happens. Then when I open the front door I hear the four dings presumably to tell me my key fob is inside the car. It's similiar to the situation when leaving the car and shut the door with the key fob inside. In that case, there are four horn honks.

Vegita, this is a long shot, but do you drive in a dusty environment? I had a 'door open' light that wouldn't go off a few years ago, so I slammed all 4 doors and it still wouldn't go off. I called Ford's help line and they told me I would need to have some relatively expensive work done. I went to Ted Britt Ford and the old shop manager told me he could do the work but he recommended that I slam the doors again, but this time, spray them with WD-40 first. Worked like a charm, saved me $280. The doors were closed, but the locking sensor wasn't completely closed and the WD-40 let it close properly. WD-40 and duct tape, is there anything they can't do?
