I'm on a trajectory to take delivery of my Volt in March. Question though - as we know it only holds 4 people. Are there any potential after market, street legal, and most importantly SAFE modifications that would enable the Volt to have a seat put in the hatchback area for 3rd kid? For example, something that faces rewards?

My wife doesn't yet know that it's a 4 seater, and we eventually plan to have a 3rd kid. Mind you we do own another (aging) vehicle that can hold 5 people, but it makes for an easier sell to the wife, if there's some prospect doing the above mentioned modification.

I don't believe so. That being said we plan to have 3 kids as well. I will use the volt to take the kids (no wife) here and there and my oldest (5) will sit in the front seat. Of course it won't be for trips or even when the whole family goes out. It will just be used in cases where I have to pick up all the kids.

NOT advisable and I highly doubt there would (or could?) be any commercial aftermarket solutions for this without opening themselves up for lawsuit. What you do with your car and your kids is of course your choice, but modifications or alterations to a vehicle that permit it to be used or operated other than originally intended most often creates a opening for "negligence" in the eyes of the courts. Still it remains to be seen if some company chooses to assume that risk, but these days it's doubtful...

WOT, I hope your referring to the hatchback idea and not placing my daughter in the front. I assume as long as the airbags are disabled you don't see any issue except the backseat is always better? I respect your opinion and would like to hear it. Thanks.

No was referring to the OPs suggestion of creating some sort of child seating poition on the center of the rear seat. Not advisable.As far as children in the front seat, I think you and I may have discussed this in an earlier thread didnt we? If not, maybe do a search "airbags" to find the thread for a full description of advanced airbags and the passenger presense system used int he RH front seating position. Children are ALWAYS safest in the rear seats, but if unavoidable just make sure you follow all recomendations in the owner manual for things like seat position/placement, front-facing child/booster seat installation and seatblet use.
