: Where is the younger generation and middle class volt owners?
cheifsfan 12-28-2010, 03:25 PM This post isn't meant to insult anyone at all. Older is just as good as younger. My observation is all the volt buyers appear to be older and from the occupations i have seen (from the naked eye) seem to be very financially stable. I am in my low 30's and am interested in getting the volt and I haven't seen much interest on here or locally from the younger crowd in the volt.
My real fear is where are the middle income buyers? Right now based on what I see here is that GM's target market is the older crowd with money who want to be eco friendlily and wants to replace there luxury car or buy it as a third vehicle. I have no problem with that but I just hope GM can break into the mainstream middle class market which appears they are trying to do with the low lease offer.
Anyways once again this post isn't meant to insult anyone and maybe I am completely off base.
hamchief 12-28-2010, 03:37 PM If I were in my early 30s, I would have been interested in the Volt, until I saw the price.
I suppose that with the immaturity of the technology, GM is unable (or unwilling?) to sell the Volt to a larger market (read, "lower price") without losing money - which they can't afford to do. From what I've read here from new Volt owners, this car is a premium vehicle, more like a Benz than a Chevy.
I believe that future EREV models from GM will be less premium and therefore cheaper. The problem is that now you can buy an affordable used Benz...but not a Volt.
BxHBxH 12-28-2010, 03:38 PM My wife and I fit right into the demographic you describe (mid 30's, family of 4) ... And I have to admit in somewhat of an "our generation" sort of way, my interest in the volt all started with Facebook. About a year ago we saw a post, and 'liked' it ... And started dong a little research to see what it was all about... And the rest is history. Is the car expensive and a little out of our comfort range - yes ... Are we willing to take the plunge anyway? Definitely. If our small part could help move the automobile industry in a different direction, we're all for it. We're soon to be proud owners of vin #270 with a scheduled delivery any day now.
ssj4vegita2002 12-28-2010, 03:42 PM I'm 26 and single and have my Volt. In fact, many of my friends are clamoring for test drives, and a few have said they would be willing to make a Voltec as their next car purchase.
supafrovolt 12-28-2010, 04:08 PM I'm 29. #450 :)
bronco7TX 12-28-2010, 04:15 PM I'm 26 and waiting for the 2nd wave of Volts in CT with my order placed in E. Hartford. I'm an electrical engineer that works for the power grid in New England and became interested in the Volt when I completed my Masters' Thesis. The subject was how plug-in hybrid vehicles could be used to supply power back to the grid in emergency conditions and how that could lower the overall cost of electricity while paying the owner of the PHEV for the service. The Volt had just been announced as a concept while I was writing my thesis and I have been following it ever since. There are a lot of people in my age group and industry that are interested in the Volt. Granted we are biased being in the utility industry but word of mouth will spread quickly.
Anxiously waiting to move to status 2000!
therfman 12-28-2010, 04:31 PM I'm 32, and I'll buy a Volt as soon as I can actually order one in Canada (I've already placed a deposit). I'm replacing a 9-year-old Nissan Sentra SE-R that I've owned since new. I do agree that the Volt is currently seen as a premium offering, and that's one of the reasons I'm interested. I've been driving a glorified econobox for almost a decade, and I'm ready to move up to something nice. I'd probably be looking at an Audi A3 TDI had the Volt not materialized so successfully. That being said, neither my wife nor myself would be considered middle income earners.
We have chosen to only own one car however (my wife and I are able to carpool to work, and I rent a small car on the odd weekend we need two vehicles), and that also makes it much easier to pay more for a nicer car when it's the only one.

alo73 12-28-2010, 06:12 PM Turns out that the 28 year old single male demographic may be over-represented - me too! As an engineer, I'd have to say financially stable, yes -- but as currently priced, I think we should expect buyers to skew upper income.

Apparently it's the 28 year old single male engineer demographic that's over represented... engineer here too, Haha.
ClovisVOLT 12-29-2010, 03:08 AM I'm 44, but act 16 behind the wheel of my new Volt.....financially stable, yes, given the fabulous rebound in the stock market the past year and one half.
It was funny, when we called On Star for the first time, the girl who answered asked if we (the salesperson and I) were impressing the ladies with the new ride. I told her I didn't think there were any women out there who knew what a VOLT was, so, no, we were more likely to impress male engineers!!! LOL.
Anyway, my twin 3 year olds love the new ride - sound system and integrated DVD make you feel like you're in the theater which came in really handy as they watched Thomas the Train while I hoped out to grab my dry cleaning.
Used to only buy Mercedes....but as gas started to climb a couple years ago, I've taken American made and off oil very seriously and am putting my $$ where my mouth is.....those driving Prius's are half way there.....those who have personal wind or Solar installations, and are driving American made EVs are as close as you can get --> hopefully, the younger folks who think they 'deserve' whatever they want without having to work for it just from being born in America will wake up and start making the sacrafices necessary to keep America viable into the future. GO VOLT, GO GM, GO SOLAR.....or GO HOME. To a fabulous 2011 and beyond!
jlcronin 12-29-2010, 06:05 AM price is probably reason #1, if the buyers really are mostly middle aged and above.
also, since it seats only two and has small cargo space, it is somewhat less practical for young families I would think.
As the economy of scale improves the price, and as GM moves this technology to other vehicles, I would expect the demographics to change.
Mark Z 12-29-2010, 07:04 AM Anyone who drives a Volt is youthful in mind. The Volt owner is not an old codger, resistant to change. No, they have been reborn with a springtime renewal of life, just as our planet will be renewed with less oil dependence. The smiles on the faces of the owners and those who see us drive will continue to bring joy wherever we travel. That is the fountain of youth so desperately sought after in our quest for a better life for ourselves and generations yet to come.

No truer words have been spoken, Mark, thanks! As an in-denial, 57 year old, I bought the Volt not only for myself but as a statement for the future of the world my daughters will live in. Age is a state of mind just like attitude is a decision. Stay positive, look forward and enjoy all the goodness in life. I know the sticker price scare many folks, but certainly young professionals are able to afford a Volt. It's certainly not a car for the masses just yet.
VOLT #63
CMull 12-29-2010, 08:25 AM Early 40's here. Married with an 11 and 13 year old. Middle class all the way. Tech engineer also. On a wait list at a local Chevy Dealer in the ATL area. I would not be on a paying wait list for a car I had never seen or touched if it weren't for GM-Volt.com and the education it provides on a daily basis. I feel I am very confident in getting my first GM car in the Volt. I have driven mostly imports and currently drive a '95 Honda Accord with 200K miles on it! Excited for the future of Volt-Tech and for my Volt!
As a retired 67-year-old, the Volt is the perfect car for my needs. I'll probably be hard-pressed to burn 1 or 2 tanks of gas per year. Plus the very temperate climate here is ideal Lion battery territory. And it impresses my kids, which is not to be overlooked. My Volt is on a train somewhere in the mid-Continent, so I expect to get it in the next week or two.
silyman1 12-29-2010, 03:52 PM I'm 31, single, and am now a proud Volt Owner. I don't make a ton of money, but I'm also not a homeowner, and if I were one, I doubt I'd be able to afford this car outright, however the lease option does make it still quite appealing. I did do some math and found out that over a 6 year period (The length I kept my previous car) I stand to save a considerable amount of money on gasoline, and that did factor into my purchase. However I can unequivocally tell you that the main reason I bought the volt is because it's the most gadgety gadget this side of my iPhone, and it's totally kick-ass to say I drive an electric car to work.
That sum's up my reason. I have a iPhone, an iPad and want a volt for it's technology.

We too have noted the apparent (at least on the forum) demographic so far on this car. It seems to be mature professional gentleman that are tech oriented. I have only seen two other women chatting on the forum other than me. My hubby is 40, so he is certainly on the younger end, but not 20 or anything. One thing I can point at though is that at 41,000 most 20 somethings can not afford this car (although I am sure there are a few that can). The only way we can is if the lease works out the way they have said at our dealership. Although this is a family car/sedan (which takes out hotrodding youngsters), this car only seats four as mentioned. It is just my hubby and I so we don't car. Also it is not necessarily the best choice for those that drive a lot to or for work. I bet a lot of retired or older people don't drive as much in their lifestyles so a mileage restricted lease is not bad for them. We are computer geeks at my house so the tech stuff is promising. I do however hope they work out the glitches and slowdown issues with OnStar. I hope more women get interested and the broad public in general. Right now though you have to be pretty forward thinking for this one.
maynard 12-29-2010, 10:16 PM I will be 70 on Jan. 10th. I guess I am one of those "older folks" that the starter of this thread was talking about. I flew airplanes for a living and before that drove fuel dragsters. So, I am definetly not your typical 70 year old. My wife is 7 years younger and although we drive either of our two cars as needed, the Volt will be mostly driven by her. We have two 40 year old boys and 2 young grandchildren. I think the Volt is an engineering masterpiece. If all that stuff keeps working we will keep our Volt a long time. We do live about 5 miles from the factory also.

Wow Cari, you think a 40 year old is on the younger end, are a techie, and enjoy computer geeks in your house!!! Nice....anyway, congrats on being the 1st women I've seen....how about starting a female VOLT thread so we can if there are more than 3 in existance?
My wife still can't answer the basic VOLT questions and she has to listen to me drone on to everyone we meet about how great the car is...GO VOLT, GO GM, GO FEMALE VOLT owners.
How sweet (blushing). However, I do know there is one other girl (Leah maybe) on here that has ordered or received a Volt and (Volt guy) Jerry's wife finally joined the group. (She will be primary person with the car). I think in a lot of cases the wife will drive the car, but didn't join the forum and may not be as tech savvy. I on the other hand already have the phone app on my android mytouch phone. I can't even log on to it yet until I have an onstar account number. We can't wait to get our car and check out the gadgets. It excites me to think my next car will be as much a computer as it is a car. Now that being said though our last several cars have been far from low tech. My car I turned in recently, TSX, had all kinds of luxury technology. The used car we have now (MB C230 is no slouch).
So yes...Girls come on...Join the move and join the chats on GM-Volt.
CMull 12-30-2010, 03:54 PM OT here - Cari, if you haven't already done so, can you post pictures of your new Volt somewhere in the forum? I am in a 'slow-to-get-Volt' market area so am still trying to weigh a few of the options (like painted or polished wheels). And along that topic, is there a common area for new Volt owners pics? I have searched the forum and found a few, but maybe there is a common place to post those? Hey...new idea for a forum thread??? :)

I will post photos as soon as I have a car. Our car is still in transit. Then we have to hash out the lease with the dealer. They are so in the dark, I hope they can get this right. They don't even show getting the invoice yet, that was supposedly sent to them two days ago. I forsee we will get our car next week (if we are lucky).

"I hope more women get interested and the broad public in general."
I'm a woman who owns Volt #63 with Barry252.
I've posted on another Thread but am posting here because I want others to know that the guys aren't the only ones who think that the Volt is a really cool car. I'm the daughter of a mechanical engineer so I learned my way around the internal combustion engine while I was growing up. The Volt is a totally new kind of animal. Almost everything about the Volt is awesome: The technology, the sleek design, the fuel efficiency, the ride.
I only have a few minor complaints: I'd like a motorized drivers seat, I'd like my passenger to be allowed to input destinations in the navigator while the Volt is moving, I'd prefer that the front air deflector didn't bottom-out when I leave our driveway, I'd like to have a Door Lock switch on the drivers side door, and it doesn't have a sunroof. Other than these few very minor issues, I am delighted with our new Volt.

..... I'd like a motorized drivers seat, I'd like my passenger to be allowed to input destinations in the navigator while the Volt is moving, .....
Are you able to interact with the nav at all while moving? zoom-in/zoom-out, scroll, etc. (by the passenger of course :))
Rusty 12-31-2010, 10:32 PM Are you able to interact with the nav at all while moving? zoom-in/zoom-out, scroll, etc. (by the passenger of course :))
Yeah yeah (passenger optional). And you can select destinations while driving (preset destinations), you just can't enter them while moving (doesn't have to be in park, stop lights OK). If you try to enter a destination while at a stop light and the light changes, it greys out the screen. Next stop light? Continue entering from where you left off.
But yes, I wish it'd use the "there's a passenger in the seat" switch to enable destination creation.

OK, so I've been on vacation and am now just catching up on the threads, but I would like to add my two cents here. As a 35 year old female, I have been interested in the Volt for a couple of years. I am NOT an engineer (although I live with one), but I work as an air pollution specialist and have great interest in seeing reductions in both criteria and GHG emissions from vehicles. I personally cannot wait for the PZEV Volt, and will likely be purchasing one of those once my current lease is up. I would also add that I am not at all tech savvy (e.g., no smart phone, this is my first forum membership) and am taking a big leap here by being an early adopter of the Volt. After two weeks and 1200 miles, I don't regret a thing :)

igotzzoom 01-04-2011, 07:16 PM I am 35, married, no kids (yet). A $40,000 car isn't beyond the realm of possibility for me, but certainly on the higher side of my automotive budget, or comfort level.
I think in general, the early-mid 20s set fall into one of two categories, broke, or interesting in making a statement. Certainly, you could make the case that the Volt makes a "statement" in the larger sense, but not in the same way that a Challenger, Camaro, BMW M3, or Audi S5 would. Those in that demographic making six figures are either entrepreneurs, or most likely in the tech industry or sales.
The less materially-prosperous early 20-somethings would probably get a slightly used Prius if they're looking to make an environmental statement, or a Civic, Corolla, Scion, Yaris, or Fit, new or used.
In time, I think you will see a broad cross-section of the population represented among Volt owners. After all, it's barely been on-sale a month. When the cost comes down on the Voltec technology making it more accessible to more people, I think you'll see it become as common as the Prius is now.

You girls are definitely not your average car drivers by far....would be interesting to take a poll of the gm-volt.com member's IQs vs. GQPublic....
Anyway, my wife finally drove MY VOLT while I was away trying to sell my Escape Hybrid in the Bay Area.
Her 1st question: How do I start this thing?
My Answer: With your foot on the brake, press the green button
Her Response: It's not working
My Response: What's not working
Her Response: It's not starting, I just put the parking brake on and it didn't make any difference either.
My Response: With the brake pressed, you are pushing down the green button - correct?
Her Response: Yes, it's not working!
My Response: Ok, so, you currently have your foot on the brake peddle and are pressing the green button at the same time???
Her Response: There it goes....
My Response: Yah, now release the parking brake
Her Reponse: I think I scared the electrician
My Response: WHY??
Her Reponse: I just about hit his van backing up
My Reponse: Ohey - be careful with my BABY and don't put it in SPORT mode (fat chance of her figuring out how to do this anyway:).
Then got both my Droid and iPhone connected so I could see how far she went.....9 miles to the nearest Target.....
Upon return, I tested the horn and lights from 180 miles away - scaid the crap out of her :o)
Oh what fun this will be, but not sure she won't drive it the rest of the week - burning the first ounce of petrol ever (post dearlership).
GO GM, GO VOLT, GO SOLAR, GO LITTLEPLUG, GO FEMALE VOLT OWNERS!

Ok, so the saga continues --> remember, my wife will not trade up from her 2001 T&C minivan to my old 2008 Escape Hybrid because she has more dents and scratches in the minivan (huh?? - how does this make any sense, but whatever).
Her Comment: I drove the Volt over to my parents house and they loved it!!
My Response: They didn't actually ask to sit in it did they?
Her Response: Yes and my dad wanted me to keep driving until the gas engine (she thinks ICE is only on her finger) comes on to piss you off.....
My Response: That would do it, I'm already pissed at the dealer for not resetting my lifetime mileage.
Her Response: We played with all the buttons and went through the manual
My Response: (With disbelief) Really?
Her Response: Yup, and it was fun.....stopped at the Stop n Go on the way home, but when I started it up again, the gas engine turned on.
My Reponse: (checked the On Star and verified she had driven 2 miles on gas) - Yup, you did....damn, I wanted to see how long I could go without burning any gas....oh well, at least it wasn't far. Can you please plug in the Voltec?
Her Reponse: Nope, to scared to go in the garage, it's spooky cause it's night time.
My Response: Ohey, please?
Her Reponse: Nope
Oh what fun it is to leave the baby in others hands - but she certainly isn't scared of driving or showing it off!!!
Again, my fond appreciation to the Female volt enthusiast on this board who would also think it a crime to leave this special car unplugged overnight with an empty battery.....GO GM, GO VOLT, GO SOLAR, GO LITTLEPLUG, GO FEMALE VOLT OWNERS!
bookdabook 01-06-2011, 10:04 AM My son is 18 and loves driving this car. He wrote a paper on e-cars for his college Freshman English course and it naturally featured the Volt prominently. The day before he turned it in Volt got the MT Car of the Year so that was put in there as well. So anyway as we expose our children to these cool cars it's only natural that they will want them as well.

Since I was a teenager I always thought I would be converting a car to electric but I never thought I would in my lifetime buy a car for more than $30,000 or so - until now. I'm sure it will be worth it.

In our 3 car fully attached garage. Yes, it does take a few seconds for the lights to come on completely (due to them being CFLs), but come on....really....
Spoke with her tonight on the train coming back from the Bay Area - yes, sold my Escape Hybrid for full private party asking price!!!
My Question: Have you plugged in my VOLT yet?
Her Response: No
My Response: Why not - it hasn't been plugged in since I left on Monday!
Her Response: Too Scared
My Response: Of what?
Her Reponse: Don't know how
My Response: Ok, I'll show you how easy it is when I get home - ((granted it's the Voltec (not a 110V), but come on....really?))
So, today, she's not 'afraid' of driving it another 15 miles today showing it off to her Niece w/o any charge.....now my MPG is down to 80....for the love of Pete!!!
Can you imagine trying to get her to use an 'all electric' car like the LEAF? By the way, on our way back from the Bay Area last weekend, she stopped off at Nordies and got another purse....Burberry or something....at least this one didn't hit the 4 digits.

Marty 01-07-2011, 12:26 AM Her Reponse: Don't know how
My Response: Ok, I'll show you how easy it is when I get home - ((granted it's the Voltec (not a 110V), but come on....really?))
So, today, she's not 'afraid' of driving it another 15 miles today showing it off to her Niece w/o any charge.....now my MPG is down to 80....for the love of Pete!!!

Does she know how to pump gas? I mean the J1772 connector is shaped almost like a nozzle.
bonita 01-07-2011, 03:37 PM What she needs is her own Volt. Then she'll get used to it and how to care for it.

If you saw the way she 'cares' for the mini-van you might change your mind.....but there's always hope.....
I showed her how to detach the Voltec, open the charging door, and plug in the J1772 this afternoon. So, if my Volt is ever under her care for an extended period of time again, hopefully it will get fed....
I'll share your optimism over getting her own non-ICE base vehicle - once there's something big enough to carry 7, it will replace the minivan. She liked driving the Escape, but still chose to keep the Town & Country.
I'm really not trying to be anything but extremely thankful to everyone on this site - have met about the most thoughtful group of folks since Cal....and do truely appreciate the Female VOLTers the most since you guys are the ultimate demographic that needs to be converted to EV - and you few are so far ahead of the rest. GO GM, GO VOLT, GO FEMALE (and all) VOLT V1.0 owners!
I'm hopeful by carefully monitoring what my wife does with the VOLT, we'll be able to assist GM with ideas for future releases.

Congrats Marty!!!! Make sure to put it in SPORT mode on the way home and blow the doors off a couple of Prius's!
ChrisC 01-07-2011, 10:08 PM Since this thread is all over the place anyway ...

On that note, I was at a stoplight next to a Prius yesterday, and my lane was going to end up ahead. So when the light turned green, I stomped on it (was a little slow) and to my surprise so did the Prius. I barely outpulled her! I had to kind of cut her off when my lane ran out and holy crap was she pissed! She did NOT want me in front of her. Not sure what happened, but that Prius was almost keeping up with me.

Were you on battery or extended range ICE? If on battery you had better be able to beat the Prius....if extended range, yes, put it in NORMAL and let it others pass ya....not sure why it works this way, but that's been my experience.
burgandy25 03-27-2011, 05:11 PM I'm a 18 year old and I have a great interest in the Volt, I have about 20K for a car (Money from being indian I can use on a car). obviously Its about half the amount of the car, but I plan on saving more for the car, but thats if my current car holds out, its been pretty unreliable.
