: LIVE - My Car On The Assembly Line 11-8-10
VoltGuy 11-08-2010, 06:08 PM Just got this note from my friend on the assembly line.
-------------------------------------------------
Your Volt entered General Assembly this morning! Also here is the VIN 1G1RD6E44BU100021. Your Volt is the 21st volt to be built, it will be the first Volt in Texas!

ChrisC 11-08-2010, 09:28 PM Oh. My. God. Congratulations Jerry! And thanks WOT for the VIN decode.
I hope mine isn't too far behind. Do let us know what they tell you about delivery. That's my most pressing logistical problem right now: figuring out how I'm going to structure December (and my DC trip) with a few other DC-area tasks.
hodginator 11-08-2010, 09:32 PM That's great! It's great to have some shots of it being put together. I wish the factory would take pictures while they put our cars together. It would be nice to see the faces that made it all happen.
Keep us up to date on your cars progress.
Rusty 11-08-2010, 09:47 PM I hope mine isn't too far behind.
Hopefully yours and mine are about the same time behind. We're originally 2 weeks behind Jerry, so if Jerry's is "produced" a week late this week (just in time for the original Job 1, now delayed by the delayed Job 1 so not really) we can now hope for a 11/22/10 TPW. But wait, there's more...
Jerry's car is #21, which implies they scheduled at least 21 cars for 11/1. But you've been told you're < 50 IIRC. How can they do 21 cars week 1, but only 14 cars/week max after that?
My guess is they may be doing around 15-16 cars a week, but politically they had to "produce" more that first week. "What do you mean I'm week 2? I'm more important than that?" (and CERTAINLY not saying Jerry's that way at ALL!). So Jerry's car, scheduled for week 1, really comes out in week 2. Since they were all held up by the 11/11 Job 1 date, it didn't matter.
If that's a reasonably close to correct interpretation, that would mean you and I are still TPW=11/15, and we ship with all the other "week 1" cars. If not... well, then not. Looking forward to finding out!
hodginator 11-08-2010, 09:59 PM Seriously, how much do I have to pay your friend to take some assembly shots of my car?:D
airton 11-08-2010, 10:08 PM um ditto that and does he except PayPal?
Rusty 11-09-2010, 01:16 AM Here's a complete breakdown of the VOLT's VIN Structure:
Is the Production Sequence Number unique across all Volts or VIN options? That is, if the first car produced has premium seats and the second car has standard, would the second car's VIN be:
1G1RC6E4?BU100002 (unique across all Volts) or
1G1RC6E4?BU100001 (unique across all standard interior Volts)?
Does the first Volt into the line start at 1 or 0?
VoltGuy 11-09-2010, 06:14 AM Rusty
The sequence number is just that. It is not the sequence for that vehicle option list. It is the sequence for all 2011 Volts built on the line. That is why Jeffrey can say mine is number 21 and not have to qualify that by saying it is #21 with those certain options.

VoltGuy 11-09-2010, 06:29 AM Seriously, how much do I have to pay your friend to take some assembly shots of my car?:D
I actually posed that question to him and as much as he would like to help (even with no pay) he is afraid it would get him in trouble. That would especially be the case if he made a business out of taking pictures on the assembly line. Jeffrey is probably mid 20's and looks forward to a long future with GM.
I mentioned bragging about my car but that is not what I am doing here ( maybe a little bit :) ). But by using the input from Jeffrey, it gives everyone a chance to try and figure out a time line on when their car might make it onto the line and to complete production, such as Rusty has done. The TPW is the benchmark point then we can kind of extrapolate the production time, knowing that it will continue to get quicker and quicker as time goes on. The goal, according Jeffrey, is 50+ cars a day to make their goal of 15000 cars in the first calendar year.
Jerry
Awesome Jerry, the dream is close at hand.
rhellie 11-09-2010, 10:15 AM Congratulations Jerry, thanks for sharing the excitement with all of us. Quite a treat to be so linked in to the actual production process.
VoltGuy 11-09-2010, 04:46 PM Got a call from my Volt Advisor today and she said she had seen pictures of my car on the web site. She was calling to congratulate me. She did not have any information on when the cars might ship but she did warn me that they are going over these first Volts with a fine tooth comb and that it might not be ready to ship until toward the end of the month. I guess Lyle can tell us about the delays due to the extra QC on these cars.
The gmtracking site still has not updated so it is at least two days behind.
Jerry
ChrisC 11-09-2010, 05:23 PM What is your status per GMtracking / CamaroTracking? I think you might have mentioned it in another thread but not this one.
VoltGuy 11-09-2010, 06:05 PM Chris
It is still sitting at 3400 so that tells us the tracking sure doesn't keep up as I should be at whatever the code is for the VIN number being issued.

Jerry, I'm a bit confused... Aren't you going to stay at 3400 until your Volt is completely produced, at which time it will move to 3800? Judging by your picture and posts, it's on the assembly line but not completed yet. Did I miss an update?
Congrats for being so close, I'm living vicariously through you and Lyle!
VoltGuy 11-09-2010, 07:31 PM I am pretty sure there is a code (if not two) during production that have not show up. I believe Chris has the full list. I seem to remember 3800 being a code for when the VIN is issued and again I am still at 3400.
Jerry

Chris posted the list on the ides of September here: http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread.php?5139-Official-Chevrolet-Volt-Order-Tracking-Online&p=42807#post42807
The pertinent section would be:
3400 = Broadcast (Order is sent to various build & supplier areas to bring order together)
3800 = Produced (Order is built and VIN# shows in the Dealer Order system now)
4150 = Invoiced (Order is invoiced to the dealer)
So there doesn't look to be a number just for the VIN. I think it's VIN and done.
VoltGuy 11-09-2010, 07:48 PM Thanks Rusty and Clarkson
I thought the VIN number was a stand alone code. That means gmtracking.com is NOT behind.
Jerry

I will still be anxiously awaiting word from you that you've moved to 3800!
Wonder who the other 20 people are in front of you? Maybe they're all GM VIP's?
ChrisC 11-09-2010, 09:13 PM Exactly. I think 3800 is still in your future, Jerry.
I did put together a better post than the one linked to above; you can get to it via the link in my sig below.
VoltGuy 11-10-2010, 11:33 AM My car is off the line now. It will sit until after the Nov 30th job one ceremony, no shipments before then. Shucks!!
Jerry
honoreitiscom 11-10-2010, 11:45 AM Jerry: Does your Dham insider tell you that your car is totally complete? If so, what was the total production time from start to end? I know this time will get shorter as production cranks up, but it is an interesting starting point.
VoltGuy 11-10-2010, 11:52 AM It started in the body shop 10/25/10 and rolled off the line last night or early this morning, I am not sure. It is my understanding it is complete accept for the QC which they are saying can take anywhere from a couple of days to a week depending on what they find to fix. Like you say this time will compress a bunch upon full production. The goal is to build them in a weeks time and to have 50 a day rolling off the line.
Jerry
Michael 11-10-2010, 12:25 PM If it could take several weeks to get from the factory to the local dealer, it seems like very few folks will actually be able to take ownership before the end of the year! Am I missing something?
VoltGuy 11-10-2010, 12:32 PM They are saying they may ship the first cars by truck instead of rail. Maybe this is in consideration of them letting the cars sit on the lot for the next 20 days waiting for the Job 1 Ceremonies. If they do that it can be less then 2 weeks from Detroit to Austin, TX.
Jerry
ChrisC 11-10-2010, 12:36 PM Thanks Jerry for the continued updates. Please keep checking your CamaroTracking status (their email notification system seems to have stopped working) so we get a feel for the timing of how that works at the end of a car's production. Code 3800? VIN visible? Et cetera.
Edit: nevermind, I see you posted in the main tracking thread.
