: Order placed

My nephew lives in Royal Oak, MI and had a pre-order at his local dealer. A few days ago he got a call to come into the dealership to go over the options and place a "preliminary order". It seems like this is not the final specific order, but more for production planning purposes and evidently he can change his mind on color. My dealer is not quite ready for this, but when asked seemed to say that it could happen soon. What seems very strange is that it appears that firm orders will be placed in September, but not get shipped to local dealers until the Feb/March time frame. I kind of suspect that they are using Michigan as a cushion for demand elasticity?

I found some Chevrolet order code information on a Camaro enthusiast website. Hopefully the myvolt.com website will allow tracking down to this level without having to bug the dealership when the site goes live. I'm assuming that the codes for the Volt orders will be the same (but I'm sure someone will correct me if that's incorrect;)). The preliminary code shows up on my order workbench paperwork.

Here they are:

1100 = Preliminary Order (Order passed GM edit tables but dealer has not received allocation to place order)
2000 = Accepted By GM (Dealer used allocation to place order into production)
2500 = Preferenced (Order pulled to the production system)
3000 = Accepted By Production Control (Order input into the production system)
3100 = Sequenced (Order sequenced for Production)
3300 = Scheduled For Production (Order is scheduled into the plant build cycle)
3400 = Broadcast (Order is sent to various build & supplier areas to bring order together)
3800 = Produced (Order is built and VIN# shows in the Dealer Order system now)
4150 = Invoiced (Order is invoiced to the dealer)
4200 = Shipped (Vehicle is shipped to the dealer or point of delivery)
5000 = Delivered To Dealer
6000 = Delivered To Customer

Mine are status 1100 (preliminary) as of yesterday evening.

I placed my order at a Norther California dealer last weekend, and when I asked my dealer what the status was yesterday, he replied (via email):

"We are waiting for GM authorize the orders. We will keep you posted just as soon as we place your order."

I'm confused as to what that means. First sentence makes it sounds like the ball is in GM's court (ie the order has been placed), second sentence clearly implies the order has not been placed. Guess I should ask him for clarification but I've already been a pest.

My general understanding is that while GM has announced pricing and we can start talking to dealers, GM has actually not yet activated the Volt model in their big shiny order management system. When I placed my deposit a week ago, the dealer expected this to settle out in about two weeks, when my order would become firm. (And deposit non-refundable!)

My dealer in Gaithersburg, MD took a $1,000 deposit on a Volt, did not give me an order number, told me I was 19th in line out of an allocation of 35, and wrote on my receipt that I had right of first refusal to show that the deposit would be refundable. Sounds like many others are having variations on the experience described above.

My dealer's allocation is only 6. They had initially thought that they might get cars in October or even September, but now it is March of 2011. And your dealer gets 35?

I had just checked this forum an posted the above, then checked email and sent a message to my Chevy salesman. He called back in about 3 minutes. He took my choices down over the phone. He said to expect a call from GM and also emails from them. This will be "the real order" because things like the color (Crystal Red) cannot be changed. My choices: Crystal red, cloth seats, painted wheels, rear camera/parking assist, everything else standard (the cloth seats are standard).

Because their allocation is only 6, they are already into the next model year. He claimed that the average Michigan dealer is getting 4 Volts for the first year.

The dealer is Criswell Chevrolet in Gaithersburg, Maryland (a suburb of Washington, DC). I was told that their high allocation was due to their high sales volume of other GM cars. There are at least 10 other dealers in Maryland that are supposed to have an allocation of Volts. I don't know how their allocations compare. Anybody else have an idea? I was told that an order would be placed later and dellivery was expected in December.

John, seeing as you are in Detroit, you just might want to consider the Premium interior (RPO:PCQ) as IFAIK it is the only way to get the "automatic" heated seats. (something that has a huge impact on comfort AND efficiency during winter driving)
Just a suggestion.

Well, I guess I'll chime in. I put down a substantial deposit with a northern Virginia dealer on July 30th. I locked in yesterday and got my order number; I am paying over MSRP but that's my choice. I am FIRST in line there.

Configuration: silver exterior, premium leather interior (natural), everything else stock including wheels

I would have stayed with the standard cloth interior but for that garish white console. So leather it is again. The only thing I'm not sure so about is the natural color leather. I have black leather in my current car and thought I'd try something new. Anybody have pictures or opinions? Will natural leather interior with silver exterior look weird?

I have the last first round allocation from Sport Chevrolet. I think they had 8 or 9 for fall 2010 delivery. I received my 1100 order number today. I have a CRM ZR1 and considered going for the same color for the Volt, but ultimately settled on VJT with the all black interior.

Yeah...I was considering the dark grey color but settled on VJT as well with the black on black leather interior. I wonder if the color can be changed as a 1100 status order?

I received a phone call today from Chevrolet regarding my Volt order. This was not from the dealer, but a Chevrolet Volt representative to confirm that I had placed an order. It appeared that the main reason for this initial call was to get confirmation that the phone number provided with the order was real and to get my email address confirmed.

Interesting, but definitely not enlightening. The rep was reading from a canned script and at the end asked if I had any questions. He had said that I would be contacted "later" by another Chevrolet Volt representative closer to the time the order is to go into production. I asked approximately when I'd get the next call and he had no idea. I asked when the "myvolt" tracking website would be active and he did not know.

Its nice to get confirmation direct from Chevy that they have been contacted by my dealer, but I'd guess this leaves my order squarely at status "1100-Preliminary Order".

Got the same call. The guy couldn't answer any questions at all, I think he was a summer intern or something.

Yeah, I got the call too. Very friendly guy but obviously scripted. I don't fault them for that, and I agree with Fluke that this initial round of contacts was just to verify / gather contact information.

Hey, I didn't get a call yet and I ordered mine on August 10th.

Did your dealer actually enter the order into the GM Workbench system and did you get an order number? If so, then maybe call 1-888-VOLT4YOU (1-888-865-8496) and ask them. I solidified my order and got my order number on August 9th, and got the call from Chevy a couple days later.

Finally! Got a call from my dealer (Criswell Chevrolet, Gaithersburg MD) wanting to know the details of what I was going to order. I had rushed right in when I heard the news on July 27 and placed a $1k deposit and then heard nothing. I am 19th in line (out of an allotment of 32), price will be MSRP, iffy delivery date sometime end of November or beginning of December, and, at long last, I have an order number. Still have not heard from a GM rep although my dealer said I would be contacted soon. This is just a little more tangible and exciting.

My Volt is officially ordered finally and I have an order number. I am number 5 in priority at my dealership and that falls within their launch quota for Nov-Dec cars.

They have not set pricing yet but it is not to exceed a $2k premium and may well be MSRP. They will make a decision in a couple of months on that. I have no obligation to take the car until pricing is set and agreed upon but that order number has my name all over it and that Volt will be mine.

I cannot thank Angie and John on the Chevy Volt team enough. After weeks of frustration (deposit placed July 3rd) they were able to work with my dealer to help get this order in. It took John less than 24 hours to accomplish what I couldn’t do in 9 weeks.

I have to say that even with all the GM intervention taking place (usually does not make a dealer happy) the folks at Capitol Chevy in Austin have been very nice to me on the phone the last couple of days and have apologized about the delay in getting my order processed and what they now say was misinformation from my sales person initially about the $10K premium. I am just glad I didn't listen to that and got in line anyway.

As we say in Texas, I am one happy camper.

Hi,
I am in the SF Bay Area, but I haven't kept up with the Volt scene for sometime... could you share which dealer did you finally went with?

I read elsewhere that Bay Area dealers are marking-up the Volt so I am checking back in to see if the situation has changed at all...

Thanks!

I ordered my Volt at Putnam Chevrolet in Burlingame. They were very nice and were selling first come first serve at MSRP. Not sure but I am guessing they have sold their initial allotment by now.

I just got my call from GM (Chevy?) on Saturday morning. They explained that once my car is scheduled for production, I'll be getting a call from a Volt representative who "will be my single point of contact for my entire Volt ownership experience". This rep will arrange for a "charger feasibility study" at my home.

The Volt order status site seems a little less accurate than the Camero tracking site (works for Volt orders also). I also found that there is a blog at the Camero tracking site. From this I found that the order status for early orders is only updated once a week on Wednesday. There are also web pages to do other interesting things like viewing the window sticker and how many other cars have been built just like yours (require a VIN). All of these things can be found by starting from www.camarotracking.com (at least I think that is how I got to it).

Hi Fred,
Thanks for your reply. It sounds like Putnam Chevrolet in Burlingame is a good dealership since they did not take advantage of the situation with the Volt.

Did they let know as to when you could potentially take delivery of the vehicle?

Thanks!
