Since the Volt will have an ICE, it will most certainly require routine maintenance.
These will be the standard things we all do now, oil changes, air & fuel filter replacement, coolant service, and so forth.

In terms of transmission, its probably going to be a sealed electric drive designed to last the life of the car.
More than likely maintenance free, the Volt will probably rust out before the electric drive goes.
With regenerative braking, the brake wear is greatly reduced. Replacement of pads/shoes as well as drums/rotors will be infrequent.

If the Volt were entirely electric, it would require almost no maintenance other than tire rotation and infrequent brake service.

I'm not an expert in this technology nor am I an auto industry economist but does anybody think this is presently a concern of auto company execs who are paid to make profits for their companies when the cars will last too long compared to ICE technology?
