What are your pros and cons regarding buying a Volt? These are mine.

Why yes:

First gen over engineered, belt and suspenders, get a car with very high quality.

Buy before next gen is decontented/cheapened.

Buy before $7,500 tax credit is exhausted.

Buy before 2-year waiting list forms.

Buy before dealers realize what they've got and start charging a premium.

My garage is good candidate for charging infrastructure demo.

Why no:

Capabilities better in second generation.

Maybe more attractive vehicle will be announced.

Maybe station wagon will be announced.

Leap into new technology. History: 1971 Vega aluminum engine block without cylinder sleeves.

$40K is a lot of money -- spend on other things.

$40K is a lot of money -- treat the car with kid gloves; too much drama.

Current car will only be eight years old.

Current car is shorter -- motorcycle can squeeze past between bumper and garage door frame.

Current car is a better cargo carrier.

Wait for GM to accept GM card rebate dollars.

All good reasons. (except discontented??)

Since they are talking about downsizing the battery and perhaps eliminating it's liquid cooling, not sure it 2nd gen will be better.

.

I think this statement would apply to the Tesla S not the Volt. It's a little bit "undercover" actually. Nice styling without screaming "EV" or "Fancy Sports Car".

I think your pros outweigh your cons by a mile.

"Decontented", as in eliminating content -- features -- in order to lower the cost. Alloy wheels become steel with plastic covers. LED lighting becomes conventional. Touch panel becomes conventional switches. That kind of stuff. The interior of the 1975 Camaro wasn't nearly as nice as the 1971's. Yeah, I remember that, haha.

Good point about the battery. That's a big advantage of the belts-and-suspenders design of the first generation. On the other hand, they plan to add E85 to the second generation as one tiny example of coming improvements.

Pros:

-My commute is 30 miles total, 4 days a week. No gas usage all week!
-I work third shift, meaning I'm home and sleeping during the day. With solar panels, I could be using sun power to charge the car.
-Geeky factor

Cons:

-Built by GM. I really do not want to support the UAW.
