Does the battery recharge as you drive? Can you get another forty miles out of it after a while? When GM talks about the range, it's not clear if it's all gas after the 40 electric.

Also, have they announced the gas mileage when driving on the generator? And how much gas the tank will hold?

It recharges A LITTLE BIT, but it wastes a lot of gasoline to fully recharge the pack.. both GM and EPA/CARB want you to plug it in at home.

GM has promised the Volt will get or exceed 40 miles of range for 10y/150k miles (both hwy and city) and 50mpg in the CS mode. Note these numbers are generated using the official EPA testing cycles. Your numbers will change under different conditions.

We think the gas tank will be about 6 gallons, GM is mum on this issue.

It runs as a pure EV until the batteries are nearly depleted at which point the generator kicks on to "sustain" the electrical requirements of the system.

What hermperez means by 'wastes a lot of gasoline to fully...' is that there would be no point to recharge the batteries to 100% I assume this is obvious or they wouldn't have even put batteries of any capacity in the thing to begin with otherwise.

Ok, it just seems to me that the point of a combination car is that you can be electric around town, and still pack up and set off on the Great American Road Trip when the spirit moves you. Until recharging is offered at every freeway exit and in every little town, it will be necessary to run on gas most of a long trip. It looks like the Volt will still get much better mileage than any gas-only car, so it should be a good choice.
