My 1994 Altima has almost 200K miles on it. I don't think it's going to last even 2 more years, much less 4 or 5 (I'm going to wait for the 2nd generation Volt). So I'm thinking about a "stopgap" vehicle that could tide me over as far as a super-efficient vehicle that is available right now...

I'm thinking about the 2008/9 Jetta TDI (when it becomes available). It can be had for 25K, it gets 40mpg city, 60 highway, and it can run biodiesel.

Does anyone else have a similar plan? If so, what vehicle are you considering?

I would suspect that people are looking at a "second car" for commuting and long distance travel - Honda Civic type cars that sip gas. People will tend to keep their higher performance / more comfortable vehicles for recreational purposes.

45MPG baby...and can be heard from 3/4's of a mile away. Gotta love it.

'99 Honda Shadow 750 ACE. Lowered 3 inches in the front and rear, pair of Cobra Shotguns for the pipes, drag style bars and pegs, and rejetted so that it produces about 65-70HP instead of the stock 55.

Lot better than the 17-18MPG I get with my '03 S-10 Quad Cab. But in this area, you just gotta have a truck. In my case, being a Correctional Officer, I HAVE to get to work, no matter what, so 4x4 is a requirement.
