View Full Version : Volt Fans - What Kind Of Car Do You Drive Now???????
firebirdbandit 05-12-2008, 07:58 AM I'd love to see this thread be placed on the home page as an article so that we can see what kind of cars visiters of this site are driving now?
Please reply to this thread with the year, make and model of the car you are driving right now?
Also will the Volt replace your current car or be in addition to?
What other cars are in your household?
firebirdbandit 05-12-2008, 08:01 AM To start this thread off:
I own a 1996 Ponitac Firebird Formula - This will be replaced by the Volt, yes I love my current car but I really look forward to *almost* never going to the gas station again.
In my household we also have a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid, fully loaded. We all really love this car as it is great on gas, great performance, and fun to drive especially in small neighborhoods.
1996 Subaru Legacy wagon AWD 140K miles (~24 mpg average)
2001 Chevy Prism 45k miles (~32 mpg average)
The Volt or something like it will be one of our two cars...or one of three if it takes more than 5 years to be available (kids driving...yikes!)
frankyB 05-12-2008, 09:44 AM Enjoying my last few years of non-EV with a Nissan 350Z roadster.:)
pennor1 05-12-2008, 10:15 AM This list should make me stand alone. I'm sure nobody else will have this mix:
1959 Chevrolet Bel Air:
I've owned it since 1991 and I love it, but after 51 years it's about time for a car to retire. Will be replaced by the Volt. ;)
1973 Corvette 454 Roadster:
I'll probably keep it. I bought it new. I've owned it for 35 years. I drive it about 800 miles a year. So gas cost isn't a big issue, even at 14 MPG. :)
2004 Chevy Colorado crew cab:
Well, it's still not paid for. It's our daily driver and we use the truck function a lot. I'll most likely keep it because I need a truck sometimes, but the Volt will become the daily driver.
1999 Rexhall Motor Home (Ford V-10):
I'd sell this today except my better half won't hear of it. So it currently keeps my driveway from floating off into space. It hasn't been moved since February. Maybe I'll rent out the bed to a homeless family. :o
MetrologyFirst 05-12-2008, 10:27 AM Pennor1:
Good list. I'm not too far away.
Daily driver is a 2003 Grand Am GT 30th Anniv. ~32mpg with some careful accereration and speed control. 120K trouble free miles so far.
Wife drives a 1998 Olds Aurora. Awesome car. Our family of 4 fits perfectly with all the stuff and it gets 29mpg on the highway loaded down with the AC running. Can't complain.
Also have a 1996 Blazer for camping purposes.
I have a 1971 Corvette I have owned for 25 years. Doesn't see the road much though. But I wax it a lot.
Also have a 1968 Jeep Gladiator pickup. Ugly as sin and 10 mpg on a good day. But I would never give it up.
I used to drive a 1990 Beretta GT yellow indy version. Put 259,000 miles on that car before I gave it away. It only let me sit once (freeze plugs rusted out). A great car.
MetrologyFirst 05-12-2008, 10:33 AM Pennor1,
its great you have the Vette from new. Not too many can say that with that vintage. The 454 was a monster. Mine is the 300hp 350. Nothing too exciting, but I wish it was a stick. The Vette was my daily driver from 1983-1988. It was a blast in the snow! :)
MetrologyFirst 05-12-2008, 10:39 AM No intention to ever sell the Vette either. It's hard to sell one of those once you've had it a while.
Courted my wife with it, :), now I have to keep it until the kids are away so we can drive around together in it again.
Actually, I'm hoping to get a chance to escort my daughter in it in the high school parades. Too many Mustangs around here, we need some Vettes in the show. :)
mnwelsh 05-12-2008, 12:44 PM 1931 Ford Model A
2005 Dodge One Ton Diesel
2007 Chevrolet Tahoe
I will add the Volt as the 4th vehicle and use it daily around town.
Paul
'94 Altima (hand me down from dad) and '00 Forester. Both cars get about 22 city 28 highway. Probably looking to get a Jetta TDI next year to replace the Altima and a Volt when the 2nd generation comes out...
hlreed 05-12-2008, 03:54 PM I am now driving a Toyota Prius, which is the best car I ever had.
2005 Toyota Prius.
Jim Rowland 05-12-2008, 03:56 PM I have ;
1. 2001 Yukon xl. (Best vehicle I've ever owned) 16 MPG
2. 2008 Hyundai Sonata 4 cyl. 5 sp. 31 MPG
3. 2004 Cavalier sedan 30 MPG
4. 1987 K-5 Blazer 4wd (toy) 12 MPG
5. next - 2011 Volt
Much rather have all domestic however 37% made in Alabama and a $13,766 price tag influenced me to go Korean, along with the MPG. I will drive a Volt!
Joshua Bretz 05-12-2008, 04:28 PM 1998 Honda Civic
2005 Toyota Camry
I think I'm not alone in seeing the Volt as a reason now to buy American again.
hvacman 05-12-2008, 05:57 PM '99 Yukon - 18 mpg
'01 Toyota Celica - 37 mpg
'07 Trek Pilot 5.2 road bike - 35 mpb (miles per banana)
voltman 05-12-2008, 07:06 PM 2006 Honda Civic - 33/40 mpg, 50 miles per day commute
2007 Hyundai - 17/24 mpg, 10 miles per day plus random trips
1998 Honda Accord for my wife
2007 Pontiac Vibe for me
Volt would replace the Accord for sure and will probably replace the Vibe with a Provoq if GM comes to their senses and produces and EREV version in 2011.
DaV8or 05-12-2008, 10:56 PM Daily driver: 2006 Pontiac Solstice
Wife's car: 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser
Our toy hauler/work truck: 1996 Ford E-250 Van
Special Interest cars: 1955 Ford Town Sedan, 1947 Crosely CC Sedan
Not sure if the Volt will replace or be in addition to the Solstice. I want the Volt for all the cool reasons most people here do, but giving up driving a roadster might be impossible.:D

1970 RS Camaro, in the middle of restoring. My dream car.
Nice Camaro! The second generation is my favorite of the Camaros. However, the new 2010 model is really growing on me fast and I might change my mind!?
iregret 05-15-2008, 11:57 PM Thanks man. Its my favorite year. Took me forever to find a 1970 Rally Sport.
She'll be pretty soon enough...
firebirdbandit 05-16-2008, 11:42 AM Very nice Camaro. I find this thread very interesting keep up the posts.
revolt 05-17-2008, 12:49 AM Our household transportation needs are currently met this way:
1.)1987 Volvo 240 Turbo wagon 6000 mi/yr, wife's car. Gets 30+ under the right conditions. Between the 4-speed overdrive and turbo this is pretty economical on the open road, too bad it mostly goes short hauls with a lot of stop and go plus hills. So daily economy is under 20 mpg average.
2.)1982 VW Camper 3000 mi/yr, my daily driver when it rains only. Primarily a recreation vehicle we put 2000 mi/yr on vacation trips. Seldom gets over 22mpg except on long slow trips (downhill?).
3.)Bicycle, 15 mi daily commute when not raining. I have been riding a bike which I added a fancy electric assist to two years ago. I have put almost 4000 miles on it since Aug 2006. It needs about one sixth of a KWH to take me to work and back (plus maybe 1/16 KWH from my legs). Takes exactly twice as long as a car on my work commute, 24 min each way vs 12 min each way.
4.)1982 VW Rabbit Pick-Up converted to electric in 1997 and was my daily driver until I started riding the bike. from 1997 til 2006 I put 20000 miles on the pick-up and it still is handy for hauling stuff but needs a lot of things done, mostly new batteries. The conversion is 800 lb of lead yellow tops soon to be replaced by 1200 lbs of US floodeds. Motor 8" Advanced DC. Controller Cafe Electric Z1K 1000 amps. My 15 mile commute took 3 kwh per day and a little more to top off. This is my favorite one.
5.)1987 BMW K75 motorcycle which I drive less than 1000 mi/yr. Fun, fast and smooth besides getting 45 mpg average. Maybe when my daughter gets older I'll start riding it more again.
I want a Volt because it is exactly what I would have created in stead of the electric conversion I did if money was no object. This will be the first time I have ever purchased a brand new car in my life, I'm 53 years old.
Maximum84 05-20-2008, 05:20 AM 2002 Smart for two cdi - ~ 70 MPG (3,3 litres per 100 kilometres)
I`m really looking forward to get a Volt. In Germany we now have to pay 8,50 to 9,00 $ per Gallone. It hurts although driving a Smart.
OPEC SUCKS 05-28-2008, 12:14 AM 2001 Saturn Sl 5-sp Manual daily driver, 36 mpg average
2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4x4 Wife's DD, 17 mpg avg.
Both vehicles completely paid for, Explorer also does duty pulling trailer. We're keeping both. And we'll fight over the VOLT when it gets here. UL 87 octane gasoline is now $4.19 gallon.
Greetings from Loomis, Placer County, California, USA
Edit: Forgot the 2005 Suzuki SV650s Sunny day commuter about 52 mpg.
Joohn 05-28-2008, 02:36 PM BMW 1 series, 118d :) 5,5l/100km in average!
Javan 05-29-2008, 01:51 AM My car: 2001 Toyota Prius, now with 187,000 miles. It is a great car. My wife's car: 2005 Honda Civic hybrid. She likes it (but it is slightly underpowered). For hauling garden manure and recycling: 1994 Dodge Dakota pickup. I'm not sure yet who will get the Volt. It will be better for my wife to commute in this car, but I guess we can share it. Jim
calgaryvolt 05-29-2008, 11:27 AM I own a 2006 Chevy HHR and might be getting my mom's 2000 Chevy Impala in a few months if she moves to Europe this fall. My girlfriend owns a 1994 or 5 Mercury Topaz.
For me the Volt would be an addition to the HHR.
max_headroom 05-29-2008, 11:57 AM I drive a 2004 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab 4x4.
The Volt will not be a replacement for the Colorado (unless it grows a pickup bed, gets 4x4, and can tow 4000lbs :)).
fr3nch13 05-30-2008, 11:24 AM 1995 Dodge Intreped ES <-- My car, to be replaced by the Volt.
2008 Mazda3 iTouring <-- Wife's car, 2 days old
Red HHR 05-31-2008, 07:40 PM Guess what I drive? It is the smaller engine with a 5-speed. It was the only Red one in the Northeast with that combo when I bought it. Not hard to get 30mpg. It will get 35 on a road trip. We also have a Colorado, 4cyl with 5-speed. Because we have a mud season here it has the ZR-1 package. 22 mpg, except when it snows. Gosh it is hard to find a car or truck with a standard these days. Both are fun to drive, I enjoy “rowing” on the back roads.
I also carpool so I have really effective mpg per person.
Red HHR
BestTimesNow 05-31-2008, 08:03 PM Currently we have a 2002 Mustang GT, 1997 Jaguar XK8 Coupe, and a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire Roadster. I hate to see any of them go, but the Jag is getting very expensive on maintenance, so it may be toast.
I hope the plug in hybrid comes out as scheduled. I am tired of sending my money to the Middle East.
DaV8or 06-02-2008, 12:01 PM Guess what I drive? It is the smaller engine with a 5-speed. Red HHR
My guess is, that since the HHR is built on the Cobalt platform, that the next generation HHR may very well be E-Flex as an option. I think that would be very cool.
Red HHR 06-04-2008, 01:54 AM Very witty Best Times, I had Jag, and guess what? It's hood was almost always open. I did enjoy twilding with the multiple carbs, trying to get an extra mile or two per gallon out of it. Now it just sits in the back of the barn. If I knew how I would put an electric motor in it.
DaV8or, I was thinking the same thing. I do like Retro.. If GM would do an old E-Type... or Split Window...
Actually I really liked the SSR. Till I noticed the mileage, and the lack of four wheel drive. Put E-Flex with 4WD on a smaller SSR, Way Cool!
Red HHR

mikeandmerle2@yahoo.com 06-24-2008, 12:17 AM 2004 2WD 6 speed Dodge duely 4 door Diesel truck all set up to pull 35ft 5th wheel, I absolutly love it. Its parked. Runs great
2007 ford focus, 5 speed stick, 4 door, it's ok only gets 32 on the road. I will gladly turn it in for a Volt MikeC
mwalsh 06-26-2008, 02:12 PM I was driving a '98 Ford Contour, which I hoped to hang onto until I could buy into the next generation of EV vehicles.
I loved the car, but it was becoming a real money pit - $4k in the last 6 months alone, with an upcoming repair for yet another $1k looming. So I decided to get rid.
However, I didn't want to buy into a new car for just a couple of years. So after responding to many a scam ad on Craigslist, I found a genuine ad for a bargain '03 Ford Focus - $6500, one careful owner, only 21k on the clock, and loaded with everything you could get for it from the manufacturer and dealer with the exception of ABS and traction control. This should do me nicely until '10(ish), and will also be a good "hand-me-down" for one of the younger family members.
At least that's the pressure off for a while!
zzyzzx 06-27-2008, 01:25 PM 1995 Ford Escort LX, 1.9L with ATX, MPG ranges from 31.5-37.5
