Out of curiosity does anyone know, or wish to make a guesstimate, of the percentage of Volt components being manufactured entirely in the U.S. or outsourced overseas? Is it 80%, 20% less or more?

The Volt's design and assembly are happening in Detroit and the initial battery technology originated from Korea, but what about the rest of the electronics and parts?

How do they measure this?.. they have a total list of components used in car, such as 4 piston, 8 oil rings,1400 screws, 16 valves etc.. or is it by weight?

Will the battery count as 1 foreign made part?.

I'd guess 80% overseas, 20% domestic. Most of it is made in Korea and probably a lot of the smaller parts are made in China.

While I don't have any specific knowledge, my guesstimate would be that the Volt is about 2/3rd North America-built, and 1/3rd built overseas. The majority of the parts on the Volt are taken from the Chevy Cruze, which is a domestically-built vehicle. Even the 1.4L motor is based on the Cruze. Essentially, the only highly unique parts would be the electric drivetrain, the battery, the generator, and interior parts. We know that the battery is primarily made in Korea, but my feeling is that the rest are built closer to the final assembly point in the USA.

The "battery pack" is being made in a GM plant in Brownstown, MI. The lithium ion cells are purchased from CPI, a subsidiary of LG Chem. These will be manufactured in a new plant in western Michigan. The very first battery packs were made for GM by LG Chem.

Supposedly there will be electric motors made in a plant NE of Baltimore (where hybrid transmissions are currently made).
