: Volt in AZ Heat?
ol1bit 12-01-2009, 12:50 AM I found this on dailytech. Anyone have any idea if this will work in 120+ days?
One disappointment is that the Volt and other Lithium-ion battery-powered electric vehicles may not be viable in hotter climates, such as some states in the American Southwest. Despite the fact that Volts will be sold in these states, performance may be significantly undermined due to the heat. Volt Chief Engineer Andrew Farah describes, "The Volt may not be right for everyone. If you live in the Southwest, depending on how you use your car, the Volt might not be right for you."
:(
hermperez 12-01-2009, 03:22 PM 120 degrees (how can you survive that?) would be very stressful on the batteries.. the Volt would probably go into shutdown if the temperature at the batteries ever get to 130 degrees.
ol1bit 12-01-2009, 10:16 PM Yep, I survive. I think the hotest Phoenix got was 122 one summer, after that they moved the temp reading equipment to a big field of wood chips...to get the temps down.
I have a Yellow 2001 Honda GL1800 Goldwing that gets about 38 MPG mixed, a 14 mile commute in the summer. Lots of water and jump in the pool when I get home.
I wonder how true it is that it will not do well. I would think Alaska in the winter would also be tough.
George S. Bower 12-02-2009, 09:55 AM It should be interesting then, to see if today Phoenix is announced as one of the cities where the volt will be offered. Outside of the heat it really is perfect for the Volt,-------flat, and too many people commute way too far to work. It really has become just a smaller Los Angeles.
omnimoeish 12-02-2009, 11:08 AM One thing they haven't made clear is whether the thermoregulation system will be able to run when the car isn't plugged in. The next gen Volts will be using solid state batteries so they probably won't mind the heat. Maybe GM will wait until then to sell Volts in Phoenix.
ol1bit 12-06-2009, 07:10 PM I know they ran the Impact in Phoenix. I'm sure it makes sense to be a test market for durability at least.
ol1bit 12-28-2010, 05:47 PM Looks like there are some Volts in Phoenix:

twist 12-28-2010, 05:55 PM Has everyone forgotten the pre-production Volt Death Valley testing? GM ran several Volts in the heat. Up long highway grades. The cars performed fine. No Mountain Mode needed.

How?? Arizona is not a roll out state.

I'd guess they're CA cars, relocated. The web sight has their order numbers, so presumably one could track them on chevyconnects and see the original dealer info...

The exact same three Volts are also at Courtesy Chevrolet in San Diego.

Ahhh! The closest Chevy dealer to me, and the one I went to first to see if I could buy a Volt. And the *ONLY* dealer who didn't have a story on how they were going to sell them, or how to get on a list, or how to make a deposit.
I'm fairly positive they've got a significant mark-up on them.
I've spoken with the service manager down there, and he seemed like a nice enough guy that I *might* take my Volt there for service (my dealer is significantly further away).
I've also spoken with the sales manager.

It'll have to be somebody other than me, even though that dealership is only a few easy miles from home.
I grew up in a dealership family in the '60s and '70s. In succession my grandfather, uncle, and cousin owned an Olds dealership (we know how that turned out). Back in the day my dad owned the parts department (which netted half the dealership's income at the time). I grew up learning to deal with a certain amount of shadyness in car salesmen.
I won't say that the Courtesy sales folk are slimey. I've not actually tried to buy a car from them (having only inquired), so I'd have nothing to base that statement on.
I will say that if somebody's to talk with them, it'll have to be somebody else. I won't speak with that sales force again (with the current management team).

I have to apologize to the fine people at Courtesy, I made an error. There are two Chevy dealers within a few miles of each other here in town, Courtesy and City. While I know well which dealer is which, I'm forever getting the names reversed.
My experience at the San Diego Courtesy Chevrolet was nothing but excellent (other than I got on their list a little late). They treated me, well, with courtesy. And they were selling strictly at MSRP for customer ordered cars. What they're selling a spec car for I haven't asked, and if my loop goes by there soon I well may.
