I got an e-mail from GM Canada telling me that the Volt will be in Vaughan Friday October 2nd. So if your in the area and intrested you can check it out.

Details from e-mail:

"Here's some electrifying news: the Chevrolet Volt will be making a rare public appearance this Friday in Vaughan, at the Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre.

We're both excited and inspired by the number of forward-thinking people like yourself who've expressed interest in the Volt. And that's precisely why you're receiving this e-mail - to enable you to see the Volt up close. Not behind glass, and not on screen. Real, live and in person. (So to speak.) There will also be a customer service representative available to field any questions you may have.

It's an opportunity to see the vehicle designed to change the way the world thinks about cars. Check out the Volt this Friday and find out more.

If, unfortunately, you're unable to get there, we'll be covering the event and posting some new videos to the Volt section on gm.ca shortly.

Thanks again for your interest, and hope to see you on Friday. The full details are right here:

It would be fun to see a Volt this early in the game, but Toronto is too far for me.
If you see it, post your impressions here.

Cheers.

I will be flying into Toronto on my home from a buisness trip tomorrow so I do plan to stop in and take a look. It's too bad i didn't bring my camera.

It looks far better than in any pictures I've seen.

It's fairly compact, about the size of a Honda Civic, and very nicely proportioned. The technical representatives weren't there yet, so I took lots of pictures, went away and did some work for a while, then came back. The tech people still hadn't made it due to rush-hour traffic, but I spoke to Steve, one of the support personnel. He graciously agreed to take a couple of pictures of me with the car. I even sat in it very briefly.

This particular car is a running prototype, and as such, not fully functional. It does have exactly the same appearance as the current IVER test cars, and the same as the production cars. I wasn't in it long enough to get a feel for ergonomics and comfort, although nothing jumped out at me as being undesirable.

Steve told me that they would not be available in Canada for 2 years - 2011. That suits me, as by then my current car will have about 250,000 km on it, and be ready for retirement. This brief exposure to the Volt makes me even more eager to be an early adopter!

Cool, thanks for the update. I'm guessing the IVERs are all being used for pre-production testing and for development and it would be a waste to have them used for show cars. Also, they have TOO much information for the competition.

In the middle of the night you might have a team strip the car, measure every part, copy every circuit board, download the software, etc. Then, one week before the Volt launches a Volt copy would launch in China. :)

I think the industrial espionage folks would have a challenge. The two guys tending the car that I talked to were both very attentive.... to the car. One guy transports this car all over North America, spending weeks at a time on the road. It was pretty clear he takes the job very seriously, and is very aware of the responsibility. He was quite firm with folks that didn't control their kids or stepped over the barrier. He called himself "the bouncer"! I think the Volt is in good hands.

Bouncers have to sleep sometimes and their pay sucks. Some slick person offering them some retirement funds might just get the guys to sleep extra deeply. Just check out history for all of the espionage that went on. Military technology was heavily copied. ;)
