At just about 35 Mph I feel a slight flutter (or looseness) from the front end of my Volt when I am on a smooth road. It is not significant, but seems to be there. It is not there at slower or higher speeds. I have about 1440 miles on my Volt. I have not hit any curbs. Could it be wheel balence? I should probably take it in but I don't want stop driving it and it is just a slight annoiance. I've been waiting for something significant to get looked at.

Nothing is better than a Volt on a smooth road. I wouldn't want that disturbed. I'd have it checked out.

My last two cars were a 2007 Z06 and a 2008 Jaguar XK, both cars had buttoned down suspensions with tight and precise steering. The Volt is even better.

If you feel this anomally on EVERY road EVERY time you drive it, there's something wrong. Only you can answer that.

It's amazing how much more aware of the surface and condition of a road you become in the Volt (and other EVs?), isn't it?

Received my 2012 volt 6 weeks ago and have a front left flutter at speeds from 38 to about 55 mph. Today will be the third time i bring it back to the dealer. If not fixed soon i will investigate the return program and ask for a new car. I love the car but this noise will drive me nuts if not fixed. I now have 1800 miles on the car, bought it at Karl chevy new Canaan ct, drove to florida and bringinging it to dyer chevy in vero beach trying to get it fixed. It mist be fixed as i once had a new lincoln with a squeak in the dash which they never fixed and drives you nuts the longer you own it

No way to know if it's the same or not but there is/was a service bulletin #PI0409 that addresses loose/broken/not sure fasteners in the front passenger wheel well that under certain circumstances caused a fluttering noise. For me it usually seemed to be dependent on outside wind speeds and direction relative to my direction of travel. My speed didn't seem as important as I heard it at 35mph and 70mph. I never felt anything as much as simply heard the noise.

May not be your issue but probably wouldn't hurt to ask your dealer. They fixed mine and it's never done it since. I have 25K+ miles on mine. Also, this was on a 2011. No idea if this service bulletin is relevant to 2012's or later.

The volt has much better road feel then given credit for. If this flutter happens on the same road at the same speed, it is most lilkely the road, if it happens on any road at at the speed you noticed it at, then it is the car (tires, front end etc.). If it is the car go to a different dealer or tire shop and get a second opinion. Sometimes when you go in multiple times at the same dealer it is given to the same tech. and you end up with the same answer, because he will not admit that he or she is wrong, incorrect. The volt is a very smooth car and any imperfection, road, tires or front end will telegraph it to you.

Good point, I need to use the same problem solving skills I use doing software design. I'll be more observant. Thanks for the advice. It will give more information when I take it in.

Just observing the behavior is not the only way to diagnose the problem. Physical issues such as wheel balance, loose bolts, faulty bushings, etc... Can be observed directly and corrected by a qualified mechanic. Don't wait until the wheels fall off to take it to a Chevy mechanic and have it inspected. You could have a serious safety issue.

My Volt's front end clangs around like an old jalopy. One of my car guy friends even randomly commented on it and how bad it sounds.

Dealer said they "could not replicate," but that was the same bunch of boobs that took nine days to fix my transmission.

When the car hits 5,000 miles and is due for a tire rotation I'll have the competent mechanics at my previous dealer take a look.

That does sound strange, especially at only a certain speed. Has it always done this, or is it just recently you noticed it? It definitely wouldn't hurt to have the dealer take a look.

There were a couple people with front strut issues. If you're hearing a clunk, that's a likely candidate...
