This interview is almost two years old but still very interesting. Everyone who's never heard Amory speak should definitely watch this!

What I want to know is why none of the car manufacturers have started switching to carbon fiber composits. Obviously there is the huge up front cost of retooling your manufacturing process, but the long term benefits would be astronomical.

Yeah, Amory is the man. Just a bit too far ahead of his time. Carbon fiber is slowly inching it's way into the mix. Unfortunately, it's not only expensive but very slow to manufacture. Amory started a company called FiberForge to address the manufacturing problems. They recently got a large contract for producing military backpack frames. Hey, it's a start!

I am expecting Ford to be one of the first manufactures to break out a carbon fiber production car. Why? Because their new CEO, Alan Mulally, is the guy that got Boeing's 787 mostly carbon fiber airliner though the mill. I expect they have a top priority secret project in the works. If I'm wrong Ford is in deep trouble.

Yeah, Amory talks about Ford's CEO in the interview. He also says that his FiberForge company made an SUV with a carbon fiber frame at little extra cost, so little that it pays itself off in a matter of months from better fuel economy. I too hope that Ford is working on this. Has anyone caught any hints indicating they are?
