Weird thing happened this evening when I started the volt to come home from work. The nice green battery level indicator on the left side of the dic disappeared and was replaced by a small gray outlined battery in the same exact spot on the display. I have never seen this small battery before except when the car flipped over to the ice mode. Issue is that I still had 29 miles of estimated charge distance remaining. I looked in the owners manual to no avail. Anyone else see this? Wish that I would have had a photo of it, but didn't have a chance to get the shot. I powered down the car and restarted it and viola! The nice green battery reappeared! Seems like a bug or something.

Someone mentioned a bug like this once before that I remember. I don't think it's been repetitive, or affected anything else with the car. Not confidence inspiring, but not actively harmful.

It's happened to me twice in 2800 miles. I rebooted and it came up fine each time. I wouldn't worry about it.

While others have seen it happen a couple times, it is probably worth informing your Volt advisor. More instances of this occurring may Cause them to look into it further, and if solved, will only refine the overall Volt experience.

I usually see something similar happen after I've done a remote start. Turning the car all the way on results in the greyed out battery indicator (probably a missed line of code to set it to the "active" image after a remote start is done). Rebooting the car will clear it up.
I haven't seen the image change to the inactive version while the car is actively on battery, like the OP is indicating. Probably just a minor glitch that doesn't impact the driving of the car.

Mine just did the same thing. I was in the parking lot with vehicle off but the accesory power still on hooked to my smartphone that I was using via 12v outlet. After about 10 mins. all power shuts off to save battery (normal) but I was still using my smartphone for about another 5-10 mins while plugged into my 12v outlet. Once I finished up I started the car and proceeded to drive along in the parking lot and saw that my Volt battery in my dash was greyed out (41 EV miles remaining). So I snapped a picture. This never happened to me in the past. I normally don't mess with my smartphone in my vehicle which leads me to believe that it's connected somehow to my phone while being plugged into my 12v outlet in my center console but who really knows?? I put the car in N and pushed the off button and then pushed button back on to restart the car and now everything is normal. Everything has been working to the tee until this little snaffu, it only has 1,800 miles.

I think the bigger issue is that the speedometer shows 9 mph when clearly you would have been stopped to take a picture :-)
