: 120 Volt Charger waterproof
mkvolt 03-10-2012, 09:01 AM Is the charger that comes with the car waterproof, in other words can I charge in the rain?
Had my Volt 3 weeks and love it!!!!
Thanks,

Brittt1 03-10-2012, 09:03 AM Its supposed to be, however I have not tried and it and I have never been one to just leave electronics in the rain and feel great about it. Others here use theirs outside in the elements though.
mkvolt 03-10-2012, 09:08 AM I thought about putting the charger in a gym bag with a plastic bag or some sort of waterproof bag.
ChrissieMeas 03-10-2012, 09:17 AM I charge in the parking garage at work and usually do just fine, however I came out one rainy day to the two flashing red lights because some water had ran down the column and onto the plug/outlet. I wasn't too happy about having to grab the plug to unplug at that point, but I survived (was careful NOT to touch metal).
I think if the outlet is up to code with a shield you should be OK. seems to be just the plug that doesn't like getting wet.
Jim Fallston Md. 03-10-2012, 10:27 AM I use my supplied charger at work every day with a outlet housing that is covered for outside use. It has never tripped, or caused any issues on rainy days. I do however dry the entire unit off when unplugging before putting it back in the car
Henry_FL 03-10-2012, 11:35 AM Having disassembled one, I can say for sure, its NOT WATER PROOF. Water resistance, possibly but the cord(s) entree points are not sealed!

Darn.. and I wanted to go scuba diving with mine. I was hoping it was rate to 100m depth.
There are various thread where people charge outside with small huts for more permanent settings to a cut-up rubermaind container to make sure the ESVE is somewhat protected. The exterior 120v plug into the building should have a cover as that is the risky point. Flip-up are slightly better than sideways for this application. You can get an add-on cover at any home-improvment store.
Mybatcar 03-10-2012, 11:48 AM If you charge outdoors and use an extension chord, turn the front wheels full left or right, and place the charge base inside the front fender area and out of the rain. Also since water runs downhill, make sure plugs or sockets are higher than the rest of the chord so the water does not run along the chord and into the electrical connections.
The charge base can also get very hot in our summer Florida sun, so I basically do the same to keep it cooler in the shade. I have only charged on 120 a handful of times when away from home, but these two steps helped a lot.
Charge 03-10-2012, 01:18 PM Good info - another question. Are the ChargePoint Level 2 chargers waterproof?
Looks like rain in our forecast next week and I charge at a ChargePoint unit at work. Can I safely do this if it's raining?
Is the Volts charge connection point (flap door open) waterproof (the 4-prong plug built into the car -100v or 240v)?
I'm loving my Volt !! - and this from a guy who's had a lot of cars (BMW's, Audi's, Mercedes, Porsche Turbo, Acura, Honda, etc.)
MichaelH 03-10-2012, 01:24 PM I charge outdoors at home all of the time (240V SPX Voltec Charge Station). I have had zero problems with rain or snow, although I did have to knock a little snow off the plug and inside of the door this morning. The 240V Voltec main body is "water proof," but probably not to 100m. ;)

crom99 03-10-2012, 02:18 PM I've charged outdoors in the rain with no problem. The charger body was covered by the roof of the building, but the cord and plug were exposed.
