The battery is of ultra importance to an EV. At Stanford U there is new research in silicon nanowire batteries that GM needs to get involved with. These batteries are supposed to have 10 times the capacity of standard lithium-ion. If this is true it could be the difference between 40 miles and 400 miles. Anyone from Stanford got anything on this? Is it true? This could be a milestone for the Volt!

Yes, it's a very exciting possibility and most of us have been following Yi Cui's progress since December. I myself am foaming at the mouth to hear more about this technology. If there is anyone from Standford reading this please give Lyle a technology update interview. Yi has been very quiet as of late. :)

Last I remember, that Stanford Professor was still running longterm cycling tests to verify the expected long life of this battery through rapid charge / discharge.
He is still contemplating whether to launch a battery company of his own, or to just develop the tech to a point at which he can partner with a company like A123.
