: Heat Status Indicator - what is it for?

I still haven't figured out what this indicator is for. This is the indicator located at the bottom right corner of the Climate Control Screen. It always shows off. Pressing it does nothing. Checked the manual, and it really doesn't explain it. Any ideas?

That indicator tells you when the car is using the electric cabin heater. What are your climate settings - I'm surprised that you haven't seen the indicator showing on. If you put it in comfort and crank the temperature up, you should see the icon go to on almost immediately.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I was looking at it when it was in fan mode. Just checked and even with the heat cranked up when in fan mode, it still shows off. In Comfort mode, it shows on. Funny, owned the car almost two months, and I'm still learning something new about it every day.

It's that kind of a car. I'm not sure anyone outside GM (or even anyone inside GM) understands it completely. 10 million lines of code, dozens of modules, two large electric motors and dozens of smaller ones... We're still trying to understand when and why it does some things, and likely will be next year or next decade, too. Gives us a hobby. :)

Similar question: When in comfort or eco with heat, the lower right screen showing the "snow flake" for the AC cycles on and off repeatedly. I saw a post a few days ago that the configuration for the climate control for the auto defrost/defog should be unchecked. I changed the setting and the AC icon still cycles on and off when heater is being used. Wondering why the AC continues to cycle on and off when heating the cabin and this configuration setting is unchecked.

I don't know that we have an official answer. My belief is that the car is running the A/C intermittently as a humidity control. There's no setting that I've found to change this behavior (though of course it respects the Comfort/Eco/Fan Only power limitations, and is therefore disabled by fan only,) and the car never displays the humidity anywhere that I've found.

Just a general FYI:

I was a climate control engineer for a Major Automotive OEM eons ago. All modern automatic climate control systems run the A/C compressor as a de-humidification device, drying the air BEFORE it goes through the heater core. It's EXTREMELY helpful in preventing fogging of the interior windows in temperatures above freezing, especially on humid or rainy days. If you have a car where you can manually switch off the compressor on a 45 deg night in the rain, try it (but be safe!). You'll be convinced. The Volt runs the compressor automatically in ECO and COMFORT modes, and it takes very little energy at low ambients, and none below freezing.
