Tesla Motors has laid out a list of options and prices for the new Model S sedan on its web site. US deliveries of the groundbreaking luxury EV, which Tesla modestly calls “the best car in the world, not simply the best electric car,” will begin in fall of 2012. The company claims that the year’s planned production run has already sold out... Newswire > (http://www.chargedevs.com/content/news-wire/post/tesla-releases-model-s-pricing-and-options-details)

A 300 mile range EV would be about perfect for me. I wish I had enough money for one, and I doubt they will be available in Arkansas any time soon.

They're listing their 40kWh as a 160 mile vehicle. I think they're using 45mph steady cruising speed in 70*F weather as the way to get that mileage since it computes to .25 kWh/mile.

Cool charging feature is the optional dual-chargers so you can get up to 20 kW of charge rate.

Is that 40kWh usable, or 40kWh total? If it's usable, then that is 250Wh/mile, the same as the Volt's '40 miles' and quite plausible in decent weather. If it is 40 total, then they are being more optimistic, possibly using the 200Wh/mile that leads to Leaf's '100' Volt's '50' and PiP's '15'.

Computing out - Volt is 10.4kWh = ~40 miles+ in summer. Usable 40kWh Tesla would be four times that (160 miles). But we need to find out if they use any capacity limits like the Volt or if they take the cells to top SOC and all the way down to low SOC. I doubt they do much of the capacity limits like the Volt due to the nature of the cells in use. Volt sales literature says ~35miles AER. We know Volt owners get 40 to up to 55+ in some unique situations but not everyone gets more than 40 on average with every charge.

One Tesla Roadster owner I talked to said "yes, we can go 200+ miles on a charge, but we like to drive in a spirited mode and get anywhere from 100-120miles on a full charge". He said he usually got 3-miles per kWh.

Like the Leaf saying it is a 100-mile per charge car and the owners complaints coming in of getting 70 or so miles, these stated miles are "optimal mileage" for the Teslas, it would seem. Many will be bought in the So. Cal area where weather is usually good and mileage is probably about right. Turn on some heaters or A.C. and mileage will, of course, diminish. With no generator on board, people will probably be opting for the 60kWh or larger Tesla S as their choice.

I thought the use of these small consumer-cells for batteries, Tesla was going to bring a lesser-expensive sedan to the masses. The price for me is a big stretch and I'm not too far from "the 1%". I'd like to see a 60kWh BEV at roughly $48K, pre-incentives, as a mass-appeal price. Volt still has the right idea as an EREV. Tesla is beautiful but will have to try to get buyers who normally buy Mercedes, BMW, Lexus and other types to move over to them and most wealthy people are loyal to their brands. A great use of a Tesla is for Real Estate agents who give tours of homes - electric cars are so quiet it would be a great solution for that market.

Its 40Kwr total.. assuming 100% charge (not 80%).

Sooooooo glad I decided not to wait and get a Volt instead. The 40kw, I'd estimate it will be <120 EPA, and would not get me to the airport and back, so I knew I would have have to upgrade. With the pricing and the options I'd be looking at close to 75MSRP to get about 200m range and rapid charge, etc.

The new charging options are pretty cool, but expensive addons.
