: HAL's Siesta
wainair 11-26-2011, 07:10 AM Well yesterday I got in my Volt and noticed the engine light stayed on as I was pulling the car out of the garage. It seemed to be moving fine but to be safe I hit the OnStar button and asked them to do a diagnostics check to see what the car was saying the problem was. I didn't have a pen on me at the time so I didn't get the exact error codes but this is what they said. They said it was showing a propulsion system error on each of the electric drive motors and it was showing that a transmission fluid pump wasn't working. Even though the car seemed to be moving fine at the moment they said it would be best to tow it to the dealership just in case the transmission failed completely on the way to the dealership, stranding me in a less than ideal location. They were very good in making sure I was in a safe location and they arranged a tow truck to pick up the car and take it to the dealership. They were very quick in arranging everything and the tow truck was there in just under an hour. That is exceptionally good in my area. While I was waiting I gave my Volt Adviser Janee a call just so she was aware of what was going on. She was glad I called and made sure everything went smoothly. I got the car to the dealership where it will be spending the weekend and hopefully I will have it back on Monday or Tuesday. They have me in a rental right now which gladly they are covering. My salesman gave me a call in the afternoon to touch base. At that time he didn't know any more than I did but he did mention that Janee had been talking with the service department 3 or 4 times since my car came in so I know she is on top of the situation. Everyone at OnStar were great and I received call backs from each operator at each level of the system I went through. I talked to 4 different people on the one call to OnStar and they all called back to make sure that their part of the call was resolved. It was getting a bit comical, the tow truck driver thought I was some big wig with GM for all the attention I was getting! LOL On Monday I will get the actual error codes from the dealership and post them here to add to the knowledge base. I remember someone had something similar happen this summer down in the States and if I remember correctly it was a stuck relay. I hope this is something just as easy.
So although my car is in the shop, that is what the warranty is for, and everything has been handled exceptionally well so far. I just hope this is one of the only rare glitches that happens. Up until now the car has performed flawlessly. I must say I'm very impressed with how OnStar worked in this instance. The remote diagnostic service could be worth the cost of membership in the future if it can help prevent a more costly repair if I were to drive under a check engine light that could cause more damage to a faulty system. So fingers crossed I'll be back in my Volt soon cause the rental car just isn't cutting it! So noisy! LOL

Driverguy01 11-26-2011, 09:49 AM i say those hub caps have something to do with it,lol.;). Keep us posted wainair, tell me, you got onstar for 3 or 5 years? My dealer says their computer list onstar for 3 years but the tv commercial ( in french) says 5 years, so what is it? Hope you get your car soon and hey, maybe well meet someday if you ever come to montreal cause i feel i know you a little bit already.....or it could just be those hubcaps:):):)
Glad you were fine and OnStar and the diagnostic system worked as it should. However, it's never a nice sight to see a Volt on a trailer unless it's headed for a dealer. Keep us posted. Hopefully you'll be back in the seat shortly.
Steverino 11-26-2011, 11:56 AM I and others have had a transmission solenoid replaced. The rewards of being a pioneer, wainair. I keep a pen and pad of paper in the car just in case I need to write something down, like an error code. You just can't get away with "something went wrong" on this forum! I would expect those moon caps provide a little more aero; plus they will last forever, and no one will steal them. :)
MIN FUEL 11-26-2011, 12:11 PM If it's not the hubcaps maybe Blue Flu?
I have to say I too am impressed with the Onstar assistace. I have only had 1 small problem and the extent that Onstar and Chevy went to solve the problem was incredible. I only hope they keep it up. I think if the public knew this and Chevy promoted it their sales would go through the roof. Is is nice to see the term customer service being taken to heart.
wainair 11-26-2011, 12:22 PM Thanks for the kind replies folks.:) That's one thing I never have to worry about,,, someone stealing those moon discs! LOL Though they would improve my mileage on a long drive to someplace like Montreal!
Driverguy01, the OnStar package that came with the car is 3 years. The first MY Volts had a free for 5 year plan or maybe the dealerships in Quebec have a special deal going.
I think it was your transmission solenoids that I'm remembering Steverino. Even though I don't like being in the shop right now I had accepted the fact, before I ordered the Volt, that being such a revolutionary/new car that I might be in the shop a couple of times working out glitches. And considering that I had no "just got a new car, hey could you adjust that so it doesn't rattle" fixes at all, which I've had with every other new car I've bought, I'm still very happy with the Volt. I still think this is quite possibly the best car I've ever owned, and I've owned a few exceptional cars.:)
Now let me go find a pen and a pad to put in the glovebox.:o
wainair 11-26-2011, 12:27 PM If it's not the hubcaps maybe Blue Flu?
I know I'm blue not having my car!
Hey MinFuel, you think your managers would mind be weaving a extension cord through the fence at your lot? my managers have had a change of heart at letting me plug in at work... Just kidding, we are working on getting the GTAA to pay for some 240V chargers, but that might take a bit of time. It's good to see you plugged in there! And I'm going to be a fink, I saw a green Caravan parked in your spot 2 weeks ago, the nerve! LOL
Would asking for a diagnostic test via onstar when there is an active error code show up in the E-mail they send ?
When I asked for one as a test all systems were A-ok so now idea if codes are listed.
Most smart cell phones have a voice recorder App. If you have Siri DO NOT ask her to open the pod bay doors.
I hope you get big blue back soon.
Any problem with the tow truck and the front air dam ?
voltage692 11-27-2011, 01:48 AM Glad you were fine and OnStar and the diagnostic system worked as it should. However, it's never a nice sight to see a Volt on a trailer unless it's headed for a dealer. Keep us posted. Hopefully you'll be back in the seat shortly.
Oh, his is headed for the dealer in this pic!
mike1 11-27-2011, 11:26 AM :( I hope your Volt is up and running in a decent amount of time! My dealership was quoting 5 business days for any new Volt part (and that was 10 business days ago :() , so I hope it's simply a matter of some connector being loose and not a damaged component! It is indeed quite disappointing to drive a rental after driving the Volt. My insurance company gave me a Mazda 3 but I think a BMW 3-series would have been a bit more reasonable!
wainair 11-27-2011, 01:10 PM No Cory, the OnStar online diagnostics doesn't work in Canada. Yes I could have just recorded the numbers in Evernote but I didn't think of that until after I was off the line with OnStar. I'll get them from the dealership on Monday. The tow truck driver was very careful about the air dam. I wasn't worried, it's designed to bend. It did rub a bit but it was fine.
I'm with you mike1 ! I want a 3series! Hell I'd take a 1series! The rental shop wanted to put me in a full size crewcab GMC work truck! I said no bloody way! I've only put $41 of fuel into my Volt since owning it, I'd put that much into the truck just driving it home! They said because GM was footing the bill for the rental that they wanted me in a GM product. I can understand that but refused to accept that. So we came to an understanding that I am now driving a GMC Mazda2! LOL Actually not a bad little car but it is in a different universe compared to the Volt. And I am still burning way more fuel, just at a bit more acceptable rate.
Yes Voltage, that's HAL going to the dealership for repair.:(
MIN FUEL 11-27-2011, 04:37 PM "we are working on getting the GTAA to pay for some 240V chargers"
Wanair, let me know if I can help with some arm twisting at the GTAA. I would like them to install a 240V for me as well. The 120V is better than nothing, but I would really like to precondition the car in this colder weather
wainair 11-28-2011, 10:00 AM Sure thing MiniFuel. I'll PM you when I get some more info from the GTAA.
Top_Speed1 11-28-2011, 11:04 AM Hope it's fixed pronto as your loaner can't be a substitute for sure, I like the blue Volts. Those hubcaps on the other hand? I guess I'll be nice and just not comment.
Oh, his is headed for the dealer in this pic!OK, you got me. NEW and headed for the dealer! LOL

Lets just say the Moondiscs are an acquired taste and thankfully only for the winter! LOL I haven't seen a hub cap I've liked yet, at least the Moondiscs give be an aero. gain at highway speeds. The wee mazda I'm driving right now is not a "bad" car... but it is extremely thrashy compared to the Volt. You step on the gas and it sounds like you stepped on a bag of angry ferrets! :D

It's ok, you can say it's a bad car :) After driving the Volt, all other vehicles I've driven feel like ancient relics. My current rental Mazda 3 included. Let us know how things are going with the dealer!
