Ampera wins rally; Volt helps win war on Terror

Note: This is two articles stacked in one post. Fox News is the one that suggested the Volt is reducing support for Al Qaeda and company. More on that after the Ampera brief from Huw.

By Huw Evans

While GM works at re-building the Chevy Volt’s reputation at home, across the pond in Europe, its cousin the Opel Ampera has added yet another notch to its belt.

Following on from its European Car of the Year accolade and positive sales numbers, the Ampera has also won the 13th annual Monte Carlo Rally for Electric and Alternative Propulsion vehicles.

Piloted by veteran Monte Carlo competitor Bernhard Darniche and co-driver Joseph Lambert, the #12 Team Opel France Ampera, finished first overall in the grueling two-day event, with three other Amperas (out of a total of seven examples fielded in the rally) rounding out the top 10 spots.

OpelAmperaMonteCarlo

Besides running against the clock, the Monte Carlo Rally for Electric Vehicles and Alternative Propulsion focused on fuel economy, with organizers using a ratio based on vehicle weight, CO2 output, fuel energy density and fuel consumption to determine the final scores for each participating vehicle.

Darniche, who won the 1979 Monte Carlo Rally and has set the fastest time on the infamous Col de Turini stage on more than 10 separate occasions, was understandably pleased at the result.

“The sophisticated technology of [the Ampera] was always reliable and enabled our tremendous success,” he said.

Enno Fuchs Opel’s Director of E-Mobility added; “the Ampera’s success in this versatility contest under very challenging conditions proves its impressive balance between durability and fuel efficiency.”

Indeed.

Volt: The anti-terrorist car

Fox News recently gave a fair platform to Texas media executive Lee Spieckerman to share from a conservative viewpoint why the Volt should make sense to all Americans.

As Spieckerman observes, Fox has at times made it a mission to denigrate the car as “Obama’s Volt,” but there are a number of reasons why those from both sides of the aisle can agree, not to mention the project to build the extended-range electric car was begun during the Bush administration.

By the time Spieckerman is through, he has agreement with Fox host Steve Doocy who says, “It’s a cool car, and it’s as smooth as glass.”

As long as GM keeps producing the Ampera here and later abroad at one of Opel’s plants. GM should be doing the same in the U.S. at embarrasing the domestics and imports. At least Ford has begun with their lineup which we shall see by August or September this year.

I was really both glad and relieved to see this particular interview come from none other than Fox news regarding the Volt. Spieckerman’s explanation and counter reaction to the negatives being espoused, was top shelf IMO. Bravo to Steve Doocy also for being respectful and even adding that he drove the car and liked it as well. The part of the interview I liked the most was when Lee mentions that he feels like he is fighting with family in terms of his disagreement with some conservative brethren. He goes on to mention Cavuto, O’Reilly, to name a few people that have given this car an unfair shake. I think this has been the first time I have seen some Volt news and actually smiled in quite some time.

I’m a skeptic on Fox’s 180 regarding the Volt. Something happened. Either they were given direction from above and/or possibly a new agenda. Doocy (douche), is just a shell of a person with not a lot going on upstairs. He will do what he’s told. My question is who set up this interview and told Douche to keep his mouth shut and let Speikerman talk? Until I see the “counter” from Cavuto, I can guage his reaction and get a better idea of what Fox is trying to do.

What’s going to be awesome is when we have electric cars that can beat ICE cars head to head. Some other kinds of racing (such as bracket drag racing) are perfect for electrics.

Wow, a $49 target? Even when EPS will be negative for a few years to come? I thought it was high at $34. There is a future for EVs but for how many $50-100K luxury models? Many buying in that range want tried and true brands like BMW, Mercedes and others. You have to have a big wallet and want to delve into the BEV technology with limited range and current infrastructure. The roadster suffered from what Lutz and Musk called the “after the first year, everyone who wanted one got one.”

It’s terrific that Fox finally gave a platform for someone who can go over those principles we learned in Econ 101, namely, that you can’t drop the price of oil by increasing demand for oil! Or in Lee Spieckerman’s words, we have to stop “propping up the price of world oil”.

Obviously we won’t be able to get 30M Volts on the road. But we can start and we can move towards getting 30M BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs on the road. And LPG and CNG vehicles. I think the numbers are that 4% of the vehicles on the road are big trucks but those big trucks use 20% of the fuel. Convert those to LPG and you can make a very big dent in oil consumption.

While this piece was indeed welcome, it would have been far better had this particular conservative viewpoint been given voice much earlier. If Fox News and the conservative blogosphere stopped reflexively opposing anything that Obama supported the country would be better off, though as the years go on and Fox’s viewership gets older and older maybe the entire problem inherent in Fox’s brand of journalism will resolve itself. Hopefully.

The only reason Fox News let Mr. Spieckerman have his say was because it was clear that he was anti-Obama. It seems that everything is an “political football” and is judged right or wrong by it’s plolitical association instead of by it’s own merits. I do not consider Fox News fair and balanced by a long shot; it is mostly political opinion with a very small select sprinkle of facts IMO. I think it is sad when people become Ditto Heads by blindly following others instead of investigating the facts and coming to their own conclusions JMO.

So the only way to get GOPers behind the volt is to say it was “thought up” when Bush was president? Who cares?!? Bush can only take credit for tanking our economy and the books through stripping away regulation and granting huge tax breaks to his buddies (and their buddies).

I think the screenshot speaks loads and actually is what everyone here has been talking about for what seems like ages. That is the problem with fox news and those that watch it, its their only source, a (per)version of the truth, which means too many are ill informed.

GM and only GM should and CAN take credit for the Volt. Too many years too late and way too expensive but, hey, even an old dog has some room for learning…

Ok I didn’t really scream but the intensity of the idiocy that came from Fox et al has been so ludicrous that this about-face really made me want to scream.

About time Fox had something positive to say about the Volt.

    Checked on
    http://www.americanenergyindependence.com/
They say the US imports s 6,000,000 barrels of crude per day which is 2,190,000,000 barrels per year from MIDEAST OPEC…
Soooo..FOX says that 694,774,775 is 103% of the oil imported from MIDEAST OPEC/YEAR
Sort of looks like we would need “90 million Volts” on the road to get that figure…..or is the key to this mystery in the “MIDEAST” part of OPEC ?
    …bit confused…can anyone clear the air ?
Or is FOX just thowing uot unattainable goals to stir the pot of confusion?
    HarolC……maybe thinking to much….lol

I didn’t check your #’s, but maybe they (Fox) are referring to oil imported for just cars? I forget how much oil per barrel is used for automotive transportation (someone can look it up), but IIRC its around 1/3 of the barrel. (just a guess)

My only key point he missed … electric fuel cost seven times less than gasoline fuel. I wish I could take credit for the “iPhone of automobiles” line, but that was all his.

FYI … Doocy is a regular on Oreilly’s show every week, so I think they’re friends.

Fox News recently gave a fair platform to Texas media executive Lee Spieckerman to share from a conservative viewpoint why the Volt should make sense to all Americans.

    AT LA-A-A-AST!!!

Even Limbaugh (though still not really on board), has moderated his stance somewhat: From “A crummy electric car that nobody in the world wants” (a year ago), to “It might be a fine car, but there’s no market for these things yet.” In other words, he has ‘softened’ to the point of our favorite (not) troll. Well, we’ll take it one step at a time … ;-) (Of course he then goes on to promote oil as “the fuel of freedom,” which we’ll actually have enough of once we exploit oil shale and drill some more. At least he has separated that theme somewhat from our favorite car).

I don’t know that it’s so much a matter of a “word” being sent down the line to the Right-speakers as much as it is the sudden absence of a word already given: I always found the Right’s near-unanimous anti-Volt front eerily strange. I even considered an oil-industry source as a conspiracy theory (naaah … couldn’t be :-P ).

Independents will decide the fate of Romney next November. His latest words concerning the Volt are, “An idea whose time has not come”. I considered myself a Romney backer until hearing this statement. A vote for Obama is a push toward socialized medicine. A vote for Romney is a push away from EV development. I honestly feel Romney lost the election with this comment. The Republicans have a pretty good shot at the presidency in 2016. But, they will need to wake up, get real, and listen to We The People to realize victory.

It seems logical to me that conservatives would like a car that is sporty and luxurious but also saves them boatloads of money. The 33.7 kW-h conversion factor that is used to come up with MPGe can also be used to compare the cost of electricity to the cost of gasoline. In St. Louis, where I live, the cost of electricity is eight cents per kW-h. $0.08 X 33.7 = $2.80. When I tell my friends the Volt gets 94 MPGe in EV mode and electricity costs $2.80 per “gallon” it blows their minds.

Wow, a lot of Fox News haters here.

While I agree that Fox News has been targeting the Volt, overall I find their coverage a bit more “fair and balanced” than MSNBC…

    ED SCHULTZ QUOTES:

“And sometimes I think they want Obama to get shot. I do! I really think there are conservative broadcasters in this country who would love to see Obama taken out. They fear socialism! They fear Marxism! They fear the United States of America won’t be the United States of America anymore. ”

“The Republicans lie. They want to see you dead. They‘d rather make money off your dead corpse. They kind of like it when that woman has cancer and they don’t have anything for her. That‘s how the insurance companies make money, by denying the coverage”

“You’re damn right, Dick Cheney’s heart’s a political football. We ought to rip it out and kick it around and stuff it back in him. ”

“I will fight these bastards every night at 6 o’clock because I know what they’re up against. I know what they want to do. They want to take down American workers. They want to outsource jobs. They want to destroy the American dream”

“President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Mo., on Sunday but you know what they’re talking about, like this right-wing slut, what’s her name?, Laura Ingraham?”… Yeah, she’s a talk slut. You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama’s doing it, they’re working him over.”

    CHRIS MATTHEWS QUOTES:

“You guys see Live and Let Die, the great Bond film with Yaphet Kotto as the bad guy, Mr. Big? In the end they jam a big CO2 pellet in his face and he blew up. I have to tell you, Rush Limbaugh is looking more and more like Mr. Big, and at some point somebody’s going to jam a CO2 pellet into his head and he’s going to explode like a giant blimp. That day may come.”

“It’s that rare election where voters know exactly what they’re voting on. If they’re with Democrat Martha Coakley they get health care reform. If they go for Republican Scott Brown it’s deliberate, premeditated murder for health care”

“The group in this country that most resembles the Taliban, ironically, is the religious right.”

“I have to tell you, you know, it’s part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama’s speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don’t have that too often.”

Look… we all have our own political ‘If I could change the world’ ideas. Eric Clapton doesn’t have sole rights to that sort of stuff.

But 50 years from now, will history show that we were intelligent enough to put that aside when necessary, and focus on what could make America strong and independent?

An American car, built by American workers, running on American energy (coal, wind, solar — American). What could get much more American than that?

The Volt really IS an anti-terrorist weapon. And it’s time we harkened back to what our elders did during the World Wars — join together as a country toward the war effort. And there’s no better way to do that right now than to buy a Volt.
