A year ago I had to make a decision. The lease was up on my Infiniti G35 and I had to decide what car I was going to get next. I love the G35, so much that I have had three in the past 10 years. I didn’t want to get locked into another 3-year lease, and I didn’t want to buy. I wanted an electric car. My wife has a Ford Escape Hybrid, and we love that car too – but I wanted an electric car, not just a hybrid.
I researched online and there were virtually no options. Most of what I found were conversions or conversion kits, or were concept cars with no future launch date. Then I found Tesla. Wow, what a car. There just happens to be a dealership near me, and they let me take one for a drive. I immediately called my wife and asked “Do you want to go for a drive in an electric car?”. The Tesla is super fast…and super expensive. It was a great experience to drive it and made me even more motivated about getting an electric car, but clearly not practical for me or my wallet.
I also found the GM Volt blog started by Lyle. I immediately added myself to the wait list (#749). This car looked real, affordable, and would allow long road trips for business or vacation too. But it was not coming out for a year.
So I called Infiniti and they let me extend my lease for a year. I religiously followed the GM Volt blog, and was a little devastated when I found out Florida was not a launch market. So I got creative and ordered a car from a dealership in the Washington DC area, red with white trim. Here is the timeline of my volt getting home to Florida.
December 9: I was told by GM that I would probably not be taking delivery until January. That was cutting it close to the end of my lease, but still doable. No Volt for Christmas though
December 14th: I got another call that the Volts were shipped priority and would arrive this week! So I bought a plane ticket to DC to pick up my Volt and drive it back to the sunshine state.
December 19th: Bought $20 worth of gas for Infiniti @ $3.05/gallon, hopefully last gas purchase for that car.
December 20: Downloaded “Road Trip Lite” for iPhone. I plan to track all fuel purchases for the Volt. I know the GM app does that, but this includes odometer, date, charts and more.
December 22: Landed in DCA…very cold here. Dealer picked me up at airport and drove me to the dealership. Everyone came up to meet me “The Volt owner is here”. The dealer hid the Volt in their “car wash garage bay” as everyone was trying to test drive it and sell it. Funny.
Volt #169 is mine!
The dealer walked me thru the car: we setup onstar, I downloaded app, I connected the iPhone to the build in Bluetooth, and I connected it to the USB port allowing control my iPod from the built-in touch screen (sweet) and I was on my way.
December 23: Left Baltimore at 6:10AM. Still lots to learn about the dash, controls, and features. Nothing like a 1,000 mile trip to learn a new car.
The generator kicked in early in my trip, before DC actually. I didn’t really even notice it for a few moments, it went really smooth. I noticed a slight high-pitched whine when generator charges the battery (immediately after I took my foot off the accelerator). Curious if anyone else hears this.
Fillup #1: Hallifax NC. 6.57 gallons, $3.079/gallon, $20.21 total. Guy at gas station asked me about it “I didn’t think they needed gas”, we talked for a moment.
Fillup #2: South of the Border (I know
4.82 gallons, $2.959/gallon, $14.28 total. Two more people “nice car”, one wanted to see under the hood, I obliged.
Fillup #3: Savannah, GA. 8.16 gallons, $3.099/gallon, $25.28 total.
Total: Baltimore to Tampa $59.77
During the next couple days I gave many “demo drives” to family and friends. Everyone is really impressed. But this new car category takes a lot of explaining. GM will need to do a lot of work to get over this education hurdle for the mainstream public I think. The good news is everywhere I go people are asking me about it
In addition to the OnStar App, I have also since downloaded the Chevrolet app, which includes the entire user manual. I also scanned the the mobile bar codes (QR codes) in the manual to view instructional videos available. Well done Chevrolet.
December 26: Finally home. The last leg of the trip I only got 46mpg, and I felt disappointed. Then I realized I was disappointed in 46mpg!!! The standard is now high, and I love it.

Dec 31st, 2010 (8:51 am)I just checked, the Volt on EBAY is still there for 2 more days. 0 bids have been submitted. ~$48,000.
It’s nothing to me,
No finders fee,
I live in Tennessee (poem).
Just thought somebody around San Diego might really want to know.
Dec 31st, 2010 (8:53 am)That is a beautiful car. Maybe a good idea to have a photo album in numerical order of as many different Volts and their owners, too.

Dec 31st, 2010 (8:53 am)Congratulations! The car does look great in red.(The beach looks pretty good to as I look out my window at the snow)
On another note, I was at Gearhart Chevrolet in Denville, NJ last night where the first volt was delivered to a retail customer. You may have seen it in the news as there were all kinds of media outlets there as he drove off with the car.
What we weren’t told by the media is after he drove off, he drove back and left the car there! It’s still sitting on the showroom floor over two weeks later. For some reason he didn’t want to take possession of the car until today (as I was told by a few of the people working there). He just showed up for the media, took the keys and drove off. Then waited until they all left and brought the car back. Strange…….
It did look nice sitting on the sales floor next to a red cruze though! As for me, I ordered a Equinox LTZ for my wife. I really wish it was available with a voltec drivetrain though.

Dec 31st, 2010 (8:55 am)My Chevy Volt was in FL before yours!
I received my Chevy volt as a Christmas present. It was picked up in NJ on the 18th of December and in my Coral Springs drive way on December 19th
. Mine is silver w/ black leather interior, tons of bells and whistles… very cool car! I went 175 miles w/out using any gas! I was bummed when the generator switched on (yes, I hear a soft whine also – barely noticeable), I had driven up to Jupiter from Ft Lauderdale. But it so awesome my carbon footprint is WAY less than my Chrysler 300
The ride is so smooth and comfortable!

Dec 31st, 2010 (9:09 am)Congrats on the new vehicle, and thanks for the info on the trip home! For many of us it will help serve to carry us forward toward the point at which we can have a similar experience.

Dec 31st, 2010 (9:10 am)Actually, there are 4 Volts plus 1 “Deposit Rights” for sale on ebay Motors. Three Volts in California and 1 in Texas. Deposit rights in Maryland. All four Volt auctions end in about 2-3 days. One has a bid that didn’t meet “reserve.” It was only equal to “sticker price.”
Dec 31st, 2010 (9:19 am)Great post! Nice color combo!
I hope your story encourages others to place their “Out-of-Sate” Volt orders.
I was getting ready to order my Volt from Jame Martin Chevrolet 313-875-0500 or Jefferson Chevrolet 313-259-1200 Michigan, until I heard I was in one of the first states to get deliveries, NJ.

Keep you mileage stats for the upcoming gm-volt drivers/mpg log:

Thanks for pointing out out mpg app. It’d be great if the gm-volt drives/mpg log had a way to extract the data (csv, xml) for graphing or be able to do the graphs itself (much better)

Dec 31st, 2010 (10:02 am)Must keep telling self to be patient and wait for FL dealer to get Volts…finances need a break.
State of FL owes me $52K for solar rebate from program it decided not to fund.
Son owes me $21K for Prius he took off to Texas when he moved out (and slowly making payments.)
But it’s killing me to read these reports.
Must console self…can accumulate $500 in GM card rebate each year. Already maxed out until July. $1500 now, start working on next $500 at that point. Only bright spot is that I know I will get my Volt for $2000 less than sticker (have written commitment for MSRP from dealer).
Tell self…patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue, envy is a sin, patience is a virtue….

Yeah – as I was reading the thread at the start, I felt like “there will be a few early adopters who report their happy car purchases and a lot of folks with Volt-envy reading and commenting”. It’s like a school dance where all the pretty boys get the pretty girls to dance and we’re watching from the punch-bowl. In fact, I think some people will start to feel bad enough to start bashing the Volt and finding minor shortcomings in the design (ie. Why won’t it tow my 30′ boat!). The only thing I think could hurt the Volt now is a recall or some flaw in the battery system. I sure hope they ramp up production and start exporting in order to raise our US trade imbalance.
Good to see the Volts getting into the hands of those who can afford them. I’m aiming for 2014+ as the next car purchase which should bring cost of scale discounts along with other options. The $50 fill-up (of regular) is here to stay.

Dec 31st, 2010 (10:35 am)Not quite the first Volt in Florida. I posted this on 12/21/10 – Just got back to Miami from the dealer up in Fairfax VA. the drive was 1127 Miles and used 30.4 gal gas and averaged 37 mpg. Stayed overhight in Florence SC at a Marriot where they had a secure storage room in which I was able to plug in my charge unit and park right outside. The charger was locked inside so I had no worries about that end being stolen. The drive was averaging around 65 to 75 mph. I may be the first Volt to get a speeding ticket at a Virginia speed trap ($300 +)!! Volt 177 may also be the first in Florida crossing the state line on 12/21/10 at 1:06 pm. Once I figure out how to post pictures I will post them.

Dec 31st, 2010 (10:36 am)The story includes:
>> Guy at gas station asked me about it “I didn’t think they needed gas”, we talked for a moment.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have 10-20 small pamphletes or even info cards to pass out when Volt owners are asked questions by people who just don’t know how the EREV works? In a (long) sentence the Volt is: “A plug-in electric-drive auto which also has a gas engine on-board to keep the battery charged to a driveable level if the charge drops low-enough after driving about 40 warm-weather miles.”

Dec 31st, 2010 (11:12 am)First to have the best “on location” photo and the historical multi-state journey is #1 for me. What a picture! Seeing that Florida coastline in the background is a treat! The “rule of thirds” is right on with the composition of the picture, that is what makes it a home run! Thank you for sharing.
Just like the early iPod pictures from around the world, it will be a treat to have some high resolution location pictures of Volts throughout North America. The GM one with the Volt rushing by a mountain stream is a perfect background on the computer. The thousands of buyers who are waiting will be inspired by having a print or digital image with the color of Volt they have ordered.

Dec 31st, 2010 (11:32 am)And Congrats on the first Volt speeding ticket! (LOL). Several folks have speculated on how soon after release that that would be documented.
Maybe you could turn that lemon into lemonade by notifying GM through your personal rep about it. They *may* see it as an opportunity to put it in a commercial to offset the misconception of EREV’s as “golf carts”. Have the ad be a brief story about people driving to other states to get their Volt and sometimes having unfortunate things happen on the way home (due to the quiet power of the Volt). Just a thought. You might get them to pay for the ticket “and then some”.

Dec 31st, 2010 (12:24 pm)I don’t think there is a bad looking Volt, but yes, I ordered a red one also and think it is just great. Once in a while I wonder if I should have ordered the light interior, but I went cheap there and stuck with the cloth interior.
Dec 31st, 2010 (12:28 pm)BTW, I’m guessing that it did not look quite that shiny and clean after 1000 miles? So, was it just a regular car wash to get it that spiffy, or did it get detailed? Already any savings in gas is going to go into additional car washes.
Also, consider that a lot of time will be spent just about everywhere explaining things about the Volt. Not a bad problem to have.
Dec 31st, 2010 (12:36 pm)Nice! So jealous now sitting in Central Florida. Sounds like the long-distance mileage I expected.

Dec 31st, 2010 (2:11 pm)Too complicated for the average Joe. “A plug-in electric car with an on-board gas generator to allow you to drive any distance you like” should be enough.
Dec 31st, 2010 (2:20 pm)Well at least Fox Car Reports includes the Volt in “Fox Car Report’s Favorite Five of 2010.”
Chevrolet Volt
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Infiniti M
Lincoln MKT
Ferrari 458 Italia
On the Volt: “Put aside politics and price and it’s impossible to deny the Volt for what it is – a milestone in automotive history. A genuine breakthrough in engineering, you only have to look at how many other automakers have similar “extended-range electric cars” on the drawing boards to know that there’s more to this little compact than its unassuming looks. Even at $41,000, Chevy will sell all it can build in 2011 – which amounts to about 15,000 units. Whether or not it takes off from there is yet to be seen, but the impact of this car has already been made.”

Dec 31st, 2010 (3:03 pm)I actually dont use the term “Engine” at all when describing my Volt. I say “electric motor” and “backup generator”. This more clearly defines it, “engine” does not, it makes it sound like the engine motivates the car, it does not.
In Florida, a everyone has a backup generator for power outages, so that immediately has resonated with everyone here that I have used that explanation. I have even said “It’s like a Honda generator under the hood with the battery and motor plugged into it” lol

Thanks for sharing Bcirce. The normal car purchase over an average 12 year life expectancy before repurchase is broken out into 4 major considerations, Body, Transmission, Engine, and Fuel. Fuel has become the number one cost consideration. You’ve truly bought American and as a former soldier I thank you for helping keep the young men and women out of the sands of the Middle-East.

Dec 31st, 2010 (3:53 pm)Well, the first VOLT sale has been completed at our dealership. My customer is a long time advocate for electric and hybrid vehicles. He told me that his previous rides have included: GM/Saturn EV-1, Toyota Rav4 Electric, Mini Cooper Electric, Toyota Prius, and he also is on waiting list for one of the BMW Plug-Ins. He is more than a collector… he calls electric vehicles his “hobby”.
Our ‘Dealership Demo’ is apparently number (4) in line for the vehicles in the system so far. So we should have two more happy customers before the daily driver shows up for demonstrations.
I can’t wait for number 2 to arrive. It will be Black on Black with polished wheels. Very Nice.
