Here we are at the beginning of the release of the Chevy Volt to consumers across the country and GM is apparently already looking ahead.
Many of us fans of the Volt have long expressed a desire to have an extended range electric crossover, and a car that could at least seat five.
GM has always listened carefully to this site’s community and many of the decision makers review our comments closely and regularly.
In April, at the Beijing Auto Show, GM unveiled the Volt MPV5 Crossover concept which looked a lot like a taller Chevy Volt. More recently GM’s head of Europe, Nick Reilly, said in an interview that the company had plans to bring such a car to production by 2015, at least in Europe.
Today a new report surfaced in Car and Driver indicating GM may soon be unveiling the US version of the 5-seat Voltec crossover vehilce.
The report notes that GM recently bought the domain names Chevyamp.com and Chevroletamp.com and that the car will thus be called the Chevy Amp.
The report also goes on to suggest GM will reveal the vehicle perhaps in production form at the Detroit Auto Show this coming January.
We have seen other great EREVs show before that never came to be, such as the Cadillac Converj.
But a solidly performing high-tech larger utility sized Voltec vehicle that significantly reduces gas use could certainly sell in volumes though.
I’d add a third row.
Guess we’ll have lots to talk about the next four years.

Dec 14th, 2010 (3:48 pm)Well, this is one the wife would definitely like very much! She will be happy I am only in a 3 year lease with TOV (The Original Volt). But then again maybe we’ll have both …

These cars have potential!

Dec 14th, 2010 (3:58 pm)What a great looking vehicle, and I like the name. Chevy Amp. The additional seating and cargo area will make this model very popular.
With years of Voltec engineering completed, a second generation Volt design in progress, the successful completion of hundreds of Volts, and a new GM, it’s going to be so much easier than the last few years. The wind tunnel and 5th seat design will be a bit challenging, but excellence does take time and GM has proved that they can and will do it.
This would have been a first choice if available now, but I look forward to the Chevy Volt and years of driving pleasure knowing that the foundation of the future is in the 2011 Car of the Year today.

Dec 14th, 2010 (4:00 pm)Just because the register the chevyamp domain name doesn’t really mean anything. The similarity to the chevyvolt name would make it prudent that GM register it before someone else does. They could just be keeping their options open. Did any check to see who owns chevywatt or chevy ohm.
I hope that the C&D story is true though. An electric crossover would be a cool thing to have.
Dec 14th, 2010 (4:02 pm)A lot of people will be happy to see an MPV5 crossover EREV. I just can’t get behind the looks of it. No offense to anyone who likes it or would have a slot for it to fill–it just doesn’t thrill me.
I’m still mourning the loss of the Converj, (wipes tear).

Dec 14th, 2010 (4:18 pm)It would do a number on aerodynamics and efficiency, but it would be really nice to see an all-wheel-drive EREV crossover with enough ground clearance to make it a really good winter vehicle for us in Canada.

Dec 14th, 2010 (4:23 pm)Chevy should figure out how to make it four wheel drive, then it would be an excellent SUV. With all the $$ invested in Voltec, it makes sense to share it across various platforms. I’m sure the competition is nipping at GM’s heels, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see the timetable sped up a little bit.

Dec 14th, 2010 (4:49 pm)The AMP is a great idea. It will have quality and innovation as seen in the Volt. But it will come down to price.
I rode in a GM hybrid SUV at the Detroit Auto show a few years ago. It was great and the mileage was significantly higher. But the 75K price tag was just too high back then… and would be also be now. So again, now matter how cool, price will be an issue. Let us hope GM will be be reading these posts to help them deliver a great car at a price drivers will want and can afford to pay.

Dec 14th, 2010 (4:54 pm)Now we’re talking. Probably about the size of a CR-V.
I do need a truck though with my work. An open bed 1/2 ton would be delicious. Ford is getting close with their Transit EV, but I need an open rear end.
Hey Ichen – we get it! The Volt and Amp use a little bit of gas! We accept that tradeoff! We wouldn’t be wasting our time here if we didn’t! You may consider going back to your spot under the bridge and settling back to sleep for another 15 years. Thanks to the Volt and its eventual offspring, I guarantee you’ll wake up much happier than you find yourself at present.

Dec 14th, 2010 (5:01 pm)“The report also goes on to suggest GM will reveal the vehicle perhaps in production form at the Detroit Auto Show this coming January.”
That would be very cool. I probably would have waited for such a vehicle, but I don’t regret ordering a Volt, not for a second.
Dec 14th, 2010 (5:03 pm)They’ve been doing Hydrogen Fuel Cell Equinox for quite some time. How hard would it be to put in Voltec or dual-mode into Equinox?
Heck, make it a BEV. Then all ya gotta do is replace the fuel cell with more battery.
GM’s got so many irons in the fire it’s hard to guess what they’ll have at the show in January much less what they’ll have in production in 2015.
/btw. I have on my calendar that Thursday 12/16 is the day for announcements of finalists for COTY and TOTY for that show.
Dec 14th, 2010 (5:05 pm)Geez, maybe this is to cool off demand for the Volt. If there is TOO much demand for them to deliver you can get really irritated customers (GM has had enough of that). By having more choices then people may take their time deciding. Hope not too much time though.

But an AMP, expecially a 4-wheel-drive AMP…
well, I might wind up owning one of these babies one day!

Dec 14th, 2010 (5:39 pm)Got another Q:
Why there is no fuel cell efforts which can use Natural gas or Petrol other than or hydrogen and use in Range extender. Some article was saying new GM fuel cell uses less than 2 grams of platinum which is same as in most catalistic converters.
So short trips – grid power
Long trips – range extender. I remember some one saying the efficency of fuel cell is 65% min.
If its 65% efficient then for sure we will have 100 mpg at CS mode wont be much problem.
Dec 14th, 2010 (5:39 pm)OT, just got the release. First Volt delivery to NY/NJ is not to Lyle in Englewood, but to Gearhart Chevrolet in Denville, Wednesday morning.
Release says it coincides “with four other simultaneous deliveries on the same day throughout the United States.”

Dec 14th, 2010 (5:43 pm)Paul – when I got over to my daughter’s school, about 90% of the vehicles are mini-vans and SUVs – this is exactly the market Chevy needs to hit for higher-efficiency vehicles. Soccer moms with good disposable income tend to spend money more than us “effiency hounds”. If they can find a nice, efficient SUV or larger vehicle that also is energy efficient, they’d probably go for it. Many “soccer moms” need EREV since they do a lot of stop and go driving but in many cases, don’t cover more than 40-50 miles in a day.
We need efficient commuting vehicles but don’t underestimate this secondary market tied to high-spend upper-middle class.

Dec 14th, 2010 (6:14 pm)Don’t be afraid to exaggerate the benefits of a truck design in the new Voltec model. On demand 4WD. With the lower front body section and lower sides rounded and turned slightly upward. Ground clearance at 8″ and battery clearance at 12″. Include a tube design heavy duty snap-n-place roof rack (standard). With a snap-n-place “Ohm-Bolt” solar roof flat panel for recharge (optional). Displays should be basic. Controls should be sealed to prevent dust intrusion and easily adjusted during heavy jarring.

Dec 14th, 2010 (6:14 pm)I would assume it was the Escalade Hybrid. Way overpriced.
I am very happy with the Tahoe Hybrid. It runs around $50K. Yeah, still expensive, but it saves a lot of gas and if you need something in this category (off road capable large SUV), it is a real nice option. I get overall 24 mpg in mine.
I watched a head to head competition between conventional Silverado and Tahoe Hybrid and they pretty much ran even- until they got to towing. Guess who won? The Tahoe Hybrid- because it had to pull the Silverado out of the mud. Thanks to high torque (from electric motor) at low rpm, Tahoe Hybrid pulled the load from dead stop in muddy field while Silverado just spun its wheels.

Dec 14th, 2010 (7:42 pm)Maybe the Chevy Amp would be about the size of my Pontiac Vibe. Really like the Vibe and was very disappointed with the ending of Pontiac and the end of the Vibe. Having a replacement based on Voltec powertrain would be a very big hit. Only of course they would need to get the price range low enough. But if it is based on Gen II, maybe it could be low enough price and even better technology. GM, build it and I will be a customer of the crossover.

The only thing I wonder is the price – how are they going to sell this? Assuming it’ll be around $50,000 before any tax credits, thats a ton of money. IMO, GM would do well to bring the cost of batteries and drive train first and not release any other Voltec models until they can get the Volt price down close to a high-end Prius (27.5K?) after federal rebates.

Dec 14th, 2010 (10:15 pm)I’d really like the extra utility of the MPV5/Amp but it’s a little too long and wide for my garage (as long as there’s also a motorcycle in there). The Pontiac Vibe showed how to get tremendous cargo/passenger utility in a package several inches shorter than the Volt — a foot shorter than the MPV5. Oh well, I guess you gotta put the battery somewhere.
+2
Dec 14th, 2010 (10:20 pm)I thought GM goal was to make cars that people want to buy, no matter how useless/stupid/overblown. We have already seen *millions* of four wheel drive SUVs sold into places like Southern California that have never seen dirt. I guess they should ignore that market.
Is a $75K SUV silly? YES! But I see them all the time picking kids up at the local elementary school (Cayenne, Lexus, Escalade (OK it’s a GM), Range Rover, BMW X3,5) So why should GM make a Voltec SUV?
I however would rather leverage the existing platform into other 2-wheel drive models first. If you are going to be production limited, don’t invest huge amounts of money to make a 4-wheel drive model that you will have a hard time getting the return on your engineering dollars.

Dec 15th, 2010 (7:08 am)Mark,
Crossover = Stupid =
Really, do we need a “crossover” electric car? What the hell is a crossover good for? Oh yeah it’a a 5 door hatch that has a higher center of gravity (worse handling), more weight (worse performance and efficiency) so it can go over uneven terrain (speed bumps?). Seriously leave the silly crossovers and even SUV’s (let’s face it 99% of people don’t need it, a wagon or hatch would work just as well) to the morons. We want practical cars. Sedans, hatchbacks, and wagons. If you really need and SUV for off-roading or towing then buy one with a gas engine. But that is a very small niche market.
…..
Get back to me when you have a few more years under your belt and your knees and back are aching. Then you might understand why some prefer to slide into a higher seet and have more headroom.

I have an Equinox, and anyone who thinks the center is high and makes for a poor performance vehicle, drive one…handles better than many cars I have owned…
Dec 15th, 2010 (11:17 am)Let’s see now. GM has exhausted the names Volt and Amp. Watt has to be next, then perhaps
impedance. Resister is probably a no-go. Shock would be a natural, if only GM had a brand

Dec 15th, 2010 (1:35 pm)Maybe someone else has asked, but why does it take another 4 years to produce this car that is so closely related to the Volt? They should be able to have this vehicle on the road by mid-to-late-2012. I mean, all the major work is done with the Volt. We are talking about mostly a little change in body style and software. I just don’t see the 4 year delay. Can’t be to “develop” the technology for the vehicle. IMO.

Dec 18th, 2010 (5:17 am)Please GM do it. Plus take that chance to INCREASE the battery to at least 35KWH so one charge every 2 x days is enough for average commuters and extended commuters can do their longer dayly commutes all on electric and limit petrol dependence to few vacation trips per year. Plus also improve the power of the generator so it can recharge the battery as well as feeding the electric engines on the motoway, so we can arrive at vacation location with a fully recharged battery.
And announce it in Europe before 2012 starts, as I need to replace my beloved BMW 530DA by 2012, and I lost patience with my prefferred German Brands to announce a competitive Plug In Hybrid SUV with extended range by then.
Dec 18th, 2010 (3:45 pm)This AMP looks just like the vehicle I want…
Make it with rear seats that can be removed like a mini van.. this will leave more cargo room and reduce weight when not needed.
Make a utility version …no frills .. tough suspension… roomy no frills interior … traction control.
