And so now we can finally say, the Chevrolet Volt has been officially launched.
GM celebrated this momentous occasion earlier today at the Detroit-Hamtramck event where the cars are being assembled. We heard from several of the executive staff including CEO Dan Akerson,VP Tom Stephens, and President of NA Mark Reuss.
As a surprise the father of the Volt, former GM vice chairman Bob Lutz, came out and gave closing remarks.
All the remarks centered on the fantastic achievement the Volt represents, being completed against all odds. From the early days when naysayers kept saying the batteries weren’t ready and the car couldn’t be built, through the economic meltdown that brought GM to bankruptcy, all the while the Volt program marched on and succeeded wildly.
Reuss described the Volt as a “moon-shot”, and called the car “the new soul,” of GM.
Lutz complimented Jon Lauckner, who also attended, the former GM VP who actually advised adding the range extender as opposed to the pure electric model Lutz initial envisioned. Lauckner had to push the GM board to allow the car to be produced, something they were initially against.
Akerson announced that the first production Volt, which he drove out on stage, is being sent to GM’s Heritage Center for posterity. The second Volt ending in VIN# 00002 is being auctioned online on a special site called bidonthevolt.com. The auction has begun and will end on December 14th at 6PM. It opened at $50,000. All proceeds from the sale of that car will go to the Detroit public school system.
“Every aspect of the Volt – from its aerodynamic shape to its battery chemistry – is a testament to the importance of math and sciences,” said General Motors North America President Mark Reuss. “By encouraging Detroit-area students to pursue these topics, we hope to cultivate the next generation of engineers who will build upon the Volt’s innovative technologies.”
It was also announced that GM will be hiring an additional 1000 employees over the next two years specifically into GM’s vehicle electrification programs. These jobs will specifically be in the areas of engineering and development and help GM expand its electric fleet beyond the Volt.
“GM is going to lead the industry in the adoption of various vehicle electrification technologies, whether its electric vehicles with extended-range capability, like the Chevrolet Volt, or the recently introduced eAssist technology that will debut on the 2012 Buick LaCrosse,” Akerson said. “We want to give our customers energy choices other than petroleum and to make the automobile part of the solution when it comes to the environment.”
GM will begin shipping the first consumer Volts in limited numbers to dealers next month.
“This is not the end, this is the beginning of the electrification of the car,” Akerson told CNBC. “I think 20, 30 years from now, we’ll look back at this car it will be something maybe like the model T was in the early 1900s. This is the first huge step.”

Nov 30th, 2010 (12:25 pm)A grand day! Congrats to Lyle, GM, all the folks here, and to our country! I’m very glad that they had Bob there, as well as some of the old team.
While I’m glad to hear about the additional development staff, I surely hope that they will be hiring people for ramping up the *production* of the Volt as well!

Nov 30th, 2010 (1:08 pm)This is indeed a great day! And think where we would be if the people against the government take-over had things their way. GM would be gone, millions of more jobs would have been lost. But thankfully the government did step in, loaned GM money and helped to reorganize the company. The Volt continued, the new IPO happened and the American people are the real winners. Our money is being repaid and the government is getting out of the auto business that it never wanted to be in and the Volt will show us the way to break the oil addiction. A true tribute to America!

Nov 30th, 2010 (1:28 pm)The first production Ford Model T was built in 1908 in Detroit, Michigan. The Model T had a 2.9 liter four-cylinder engine that produced 20 horsepower (HP) and had a top speed of 45 mph. Its purchase price was $825.00. Over ten thousand were sold in its first year, establishing a new record. Four years later the price dropped to $575.00 and sales soared. By 1914, Ford could claim a 48% share of the automobile market.
I wonder what the first Model T would go for in auction today.
I would think the first Volt will have similar long term historic value.
Whoever ends up with the winning bid for the first Volt being auctioned is one lucky individual.
I hope it’s a collector who has enough money to buy a second one to drive around.

Nov 30th, 2010 (1:39 pm)I LOVE the photo here. Think about it friends. There is Lutz with two Volts as bookends. Arms outstretched with mouth agape- it’s like Moses from the mountain- preaching the message to the masses. And to his right, the awards stacking up even before the Volts are in public hands.
Could any of us here imagined a better visage to characterize this day when we started dreaming of it a few years ago?
And to David Letterman, please revisit the topic that you (initially) got so horribly wrong. I was glad to see when Lutz was on your show, but you now need to inform the American people of this AMERICAN success story- with all joking aside.

Nov 30th, 2010 (1:45 pm)Congratulations Lyle, GM and Bob Lutz- it has been a long journey to get to this point, and the wait has been worth it. I fervently hope, though, that this is just the beginning of the story of the car that helped change America’s, and the World’s, transportation choices.

Nov 30th, 2010 (2:21 pm)This journey with the Volt has been the best lesson for what Mark Reuss has said. That getting students to be far more involved in math and science is critical for America to have more engineers.
I have actually found that it is far easier to teach the complexities of automotive processing (compromised) to those with engineering backgrounds than to teach Master Technicians whose job responsibilities have them entirely too entrenched into simple mechanical routines.
There is also an increasing new trend that I have observed in the last several years.
Engineers and Software and Firmware professionals are purchasing existing auto repair facilities or building new ones of their own.
Make no mistake about this, these professionals are starting out in the right ways and are becoming the most extremely competitive business persons I’ve ever seen.
(I am glad to place my seminar certificates on each of their waiting room walls).
So, yes, the Volt and this exceptional site have done far more to advance America and to realign America toward technical competence (which is a different aspect than mere competing loudly with advertising and boastful signage).
I wholeheartedly agree with you, Mr. Reuss.

Nov 30th, 2010 (3:00 pm)Interesting article about the Volt and GM: http://www.thestreet.com/story/10934336/1/gm-execs-talk-frankly-about-chevy-volt.html
Considering doubling or tripling production. It does seem that now is the time to be careful and not make mistakes in any transition time. Also has more mention that the Volt is priced near to break even. That would make the GM lease plan a pretty smart move on their part because they then get the $7500 per car rather than the consumer.
+2
Nov 30th, 2010 (3:01 pm)Betcha that the first ten to get pulled over don’t get a ticket. Either they will be pulled over just to get a better look by the cop or the infraction will be given a warning because the car is so cool.
**disclaimer** this is assuming that the driver isn’t 25 mph over the speed limit because the car was so fun and cool to drive and he couldn’t hear the engine to let him know how fast he was driving.

Nov 30th, 2010 (3:08 pm)No, that is your order status code, explanation of it is next to it. 1100 is the first step in the process, then 2000, etc. You won’t know which Volt you have until the VIN # is assigned at the end of the process, when you move to status code 3800.

Nov 30th, 2010 (3:53 pm)This is an ignorant comment. First of all GM writes off the cost of the vehicle, not the proceeds of the charity auction. Second of all it’s unlikely to get to a million dollars. And thirdly even if it does, $1 million would not make much difference on the balance sheets of a company with sales in the hundreds of Billions.
Nov 30th, 2010 (3:57 pm)Hopefully no one is buying this as an investment. Cars are notoriously risky investments.
Although there are examples of classic cars that are worth millions, picking which ones will be in advance is considerably harder than picking a winning stock. A lot of people have brand new Fieros tucked away and 25 years later they are not even worth sticker price and that’s in inflated dollars.
+3
Nov 30th, 2010 (4:00 pm)Crazy? Maybe, but there are some super rich people out there that like cars. The current bid is $105,000. The last few days are likely to be the most interesting. Also, I think all will agree this car is a tad more interesting than a Fiero.
+2
Nov 30th, 2010 (4:05 pm)Yep… that’s the real appeal here… some wealthy car nut is going to make this car into his collection’s “Crown Joule” … if you’ll pardon the bad pun.
And if the fool ever decides to sell it, far in the future, he’ll make a(nother) bleedin’ fortune on it.
Nov 30th, 2010 (4:08 pm)For the sake of the Detroit schools I hope I’m wrong… but if there are any super rich people lurking the boards looking for investment advice I would caution them that investing in cars is not the best way to spend their money.
I don’t know what Vin 00002 Model T would be worth, but I just saw a 1927 on eBay for $7,000…that would be $300 in $1927 money so it’s basically selling below sticker price.
+1
Nov 30th, 2010 (4:11 pm)Slightly off topic, but if you hop in your wayback machine to 1983 the Fiero was getting similar hype as the savior car for Pontiac and GM. History has not been kind to the little car but it was widely believed to be an instant classic. BTW I have 5 of them if anyone has a million dollars burning a hole in their pocket.

Nov 30th, 2010 (5:29 pm)I wouldn’t bet on that. Bill Gates et al have sufficient pocket change to make that happen. It’s not like 1-million-dollars is all that much any more.
Even a company (like GE or Hughes or Boeing or Dell) could cough up this kind of scratch since they would get a tax break on it. The publicity alone could be worth 1M.
I see in the rules that they limited the auction to US citizens with valid driver’s license. Good call.
What will be really interesting is the last few hours of the auction, not the first few days.
Lyle should get that running number (and the number of Volts produced) on the front page.

Nov 30th, 2010 (8:04 pm)If Toyota wanted a Volt, they could just order one as most of the members here did. Less costly.
I am sure that Consumer Reports will be buying its own Volt and expecting to test it before the Annual Car Issue comes out. They buy a sample car in a selected dealer (which doesn’t know who the buyer is), then evaluate it before producing its report on the car for the issue. That issue is worth reading because it give the first impressions on the car and that will help the reader decide if the car is a good buy.
BTW, I wonder who has VIN #3? That Volt could be worth a lot!

GM’s auctioning off the first (second) Volt isn’t motivated by short-term tax write-offs. Nov 30th, 2010 (9:43 pm)Are we limited to one clock? Personally, I’d love to see the real-time number of Volt’s that have rolled off of the line (Flash’s idea).
The count-down to Gen II would obviously require another time-line commitment by GM, and I’m not sure that they are willing to do that. It might also be poor business sense to tip off that information.
This would be a good time to give GM a big Tip-O-the-Hat (thanks) for all the transparency they have evidenced over the period of the Volt’s development. Without that, this site wouldn’t have been possible and I’m sure that there were times when they regretted *being* so transparent! THANKS GM!

Nov 30th, 2010 (10:04 pm)Because there are a lot of comments about the tax write off…..
GM gets a $40k-$50k or so write off no matter what the auction selling price. The buyer gets a write off of the selling price minus the amount GM wrote off as he got the car for his money, the amount he paid extra over the price is a ‘donation’ to the charity.

Dec 1st, 2010 (1:03 am)Nelson,
It’s amazing how much the price of cars has dropped over time. using the Bureau of labor statistics inflation calculator (which only goes back to 1913) that $825 is equivalent to about $18,225 today. Imagine paying 18000 dollars for a car with a 20HP engine, no radio, AC, etc, etc!

Dec 1st, 2010 (6:49 am)OT of Interest: I just saw a post on Facebook by Nissan touting the Leaf’s European Car of the Year award and attempting to exploit the EPA’s Leaf rating (“42Km/liter”) vs the EPA’s Volt rating (“39 Km/liter”) as they put it. Here’s the comment I gave them to think about:
“There’s a much bigger difference between the Leaf & the Volt than that 42 Km/liter vs 39Km/liter. Unlike any other EV, the Volt has a full-backup propulsion system — a small gasoline-powered generator that automatically (and seamlessly) takes over when the battery is empty. This full redundancy gives the Volt unlimited range as well as virtually guarantees the driver will never be stranded by either a discharged battery or a failed fuel pump. Makes the 42Km/l vs the 39Km/l seem small if not insignificant, especially since both cars lease for the same ~$350/mo!”
