Dave G:
Hopefully not.BEVs will remain niche cars for brave souls.EREVs will go mainstream.

However it is not trivial to allow EREVs to cruise around in environmental zones- this applies also to PHEVs. This is much easier to enforce for BEVs: No emission at no time!

I admit not reading through all the above comments, so has anyone stated the obvious? The ultimate success of electric cars greatly depends upon prices are at the pump! While there’s already a growing list of EV enthusiasts worldwide, most people don’t even understand the basic usage and practicalities for this kind of alternative transportation. A range of 100 miles is sufficient for most folks’ daily commute; it would be cheaper to rent a gas-guzzler when you want to take a long drive. WAKE UP AMERICA! GET EDUCATED! Let’s learn to think outside the box that’s been built for us. Europe is way ahead with EVs. Have you seen “Who Killed The Electric Car?” We’re about to see our “Revenge!” (Right Chris?) I’ve sold electric cars & based upon current projections, I do believe Mr. Ghosn has the correct strategy with the Nissan Leaf. Personally, I detest gas fumes! I’m so excited about electric cars that I’m inspired to promote them in song form. To get plugged-in, click to hear WIRED & ELECTRICITY on my web page.

Bocephus: Okay Team Volt, how much of the time are you spending on the gas-side of your transport needs. Seems to me the whole idea of the Volt was to reduce gas usage thus being primarily optimized for electric instead of ICE. I get the idea of the over 40 mile range anxiety eliminator aspect. It seems to me that Nissan LEAF owners are going to be logging much much greater ELECTRIC MILES on their vehicles than the Volt owners. I am talking MILLIONS OF MORE MILES ! That sure is a big setback just to ease a little range anxiety to me. The Nissan Versa Leaf seems to be the better OPEC killer to me.

Most people don't drive over 40 miles per day. If this is true, the Leaf and the Volt will use the same amount of gasoline. (But the Volt will be carrying around a motor/generator.)

Michigan guy: “I won’t drive that car again, period.”Well, I think a lot of Toyota drivers are saying that now.I wonder how many LEAF drivers will be saying that after they run out of juice on the freeway and are suck at the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.

Why would you call a towtruck? Electrics don't suddenly stop due to low batteries. It is gas cars that suddenly run out of fuel. Are you ever over a mile from an electric outlet?

Well you know technically the Volt also has no competition.

As stated in the 2011 Volt specifications:
