statik: I know Nissan and GM both have fairly lofty public goals when it comes to ‘future production’ of EVs (they are both in the 150K range by around 2015), but I think internally they both would be very excited to know the bottom end/’failure’ level is 20,000-30,000.These aren’t $17,000 compact…and I think thats where my opinion of abject failure and Mr. Flint’s really differ. The top 3 selling sedans with a starting MSRP over $35,000 for 2009 were:Lexus ES $35,174 – 48,485 unitsCadillac CTS $35,165 – 35,165 unitsAcura TL $35,105 – 33,620 units(excluding the family series/class from BMW(5)/Mercedes(C))…and it drops very, very quickly after this. There is a virtual sea of cars selling around the 10,000 unit level right now at this price point. (Quote)

Thanks for helping keep the Volt sales volume discussion realistic. Shows how essential a low price is to sales volume. And vice versa for new tech. Doesn't matter how compelling the car is--if it's $40k, a low percentage of people can afford to buy it. $20k and they'll be huge. In between will be, well, in-between.

Don J: Please do us all a favor. When you need to clean your windshield, pull into a gas station, clean the windshield using their cleaner, and then drive off. Other people will start to see the light.

Will do, good advertising for all EVs.

The unspoken truth of the electric cars successful is it will drive up the cost of electricity. Why, because of the increase in demand. Can you say roving black-outs? Look at what happened when diesel vehicles moved into accelerated production, the cost of diesel when through the roof. I predict the same thing will happen to electricity. You should expect your electric bills to increase similarly.
