Here on this last day of 2009, it seems like it would be a good time to reflect on this past year of Volt developments.
It has been a truly memorable year for sure, but mostly in a negative way with respect to the financial crisis and GM’s bankruptcy proceedings. That did place them on good footing and with the Volt program unswayed and still going strong, next year, the year of the Volt, should prove to be most important of all.
Interestingly the financial mayhem didn’t make it into the top ten posts of the year.
So what were the top 10 posts of 2009? In order of number of page views here they are:
1. Dave Letterman Bashes the Chevy Volt on National Television w/Video
This was when Late Show comedian Dave Letterman “got it wrong” about the Volt on national television, thinking the car could only be driven for 40 miles and missing the point about the range extender, calling it “ridiculous.”.
2. GM-Volt.com Chevy Volt Mule Test Drive w/ Video
This was that special day in April when I got behind the wheel of a Cruze-based Volt mule and took it for about 10 miles around GM’s Milford Proving grounds. Smooth.
3. GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz Brings Chevy Volt on Late Night with David Letterman and it’s Awesome
Sweet vindication. GM vice chairman and consummate car guy Bob Lutz got on Letterman’s show and set the record straight about the Volt. Complete with Letterman’ on-air apology.
4. Exclusive: Visit to the Chevy Volt Integration Vehicle Assembly Plant
I got to be the first journalist to visit GMs pre-production operations facility and observe the first of 80 pre-production Chevy Volt prototypes being assembled. These have been completed and under intensive testing since September.
5. GM Aims to ‘Wow’ Customers With Seamless and Intuitive Chevy Volt Driving Experience
GM vice president Jon Lauckner discusses GM’s high-reaching goal of perfection for the Chevy Volt
6. Q&A with Ian Clifford CEO of Zenn Motors: EEStor to Publicly Prove its Technology Imminently
No matter how you cut it, EEStor news is always very popular. I guess imminent should have been defined as greater than 6 months because it still hasn’t happened. Needless to say, our silent and stealthy friends in Texas have missed yet another “gaurenteed” milestone to reveal the elusive breakthrough EESU by the end of 2009. The same thing happened in 2007 and 2008. There’s always 2010! Not sure if 10% owner Zenn Motors will make it that far though, they will stop production of their Zenn low speed vehicle in April to focus their entire company on producing EEStor-powered drivetrains to sell to OEMs.
7. Test Ride: Chevy Volt Pre-production Prototype w/ Video!
In this case I got to take a brief ride in a near production Volt with former Volt executive Frank Weber at the wheel. My first time ever in the final version of the car.
8. GM: Chevy Volt Price Depends on Cost of Gas and Will be Set in May 2010
Another always hot and popular topic is what the Volt’s price will be. In this story Jon Lauckner explains GM won’t officially set the Volts price until 6 months before production, and will base it in part on gas prices at the time. This means we’ll finally know the price in about 5 months. Later information suggests GM may have a surprise for us in this regard.
9. Cadillac Converj Extended-Range Electric Vehicle
This was the world premier unveiling of the beautiful Cadillac Converj Voltec-powered concept. GM has reportedly greenlighted it production for 2012. Expect a very high-tech and high-performance Voltec car with maximum bells and whistles. Cost per Bob Lutz will be about “two Volts.”
10. Chevy Volt Generation Two
A short Q&A I did with Nick Zielinksi who is a GM advanced technology engineer. He explains the rationale behind the next generation Volt: lower and lighter with smaller battery and same range. Planning and development are well underway. We wish them luck.
And thanks to you all for reading GM-Volt.com. You are my inspiration for keeping on keeping on. Please keep spreading the word about the Volt, and follow GM-Volt on Twitter and Facebook.

To the many GM-Volt.com posters – a hearty thank you for the additional information, insight and wisdom you’ve provided. How often is it that an interest blog becomes a better resource than traditional outlets? You guys and gals have made it so. Has helped this reader understand a lot more about engineering, finance, auto sales and the compromises that must be made to meet such a wide range of automotive needs among us all.

Dec 31st, 2009 (8:41 am)Given the year that GM has had as a company, I’m thankful that there still is a company and that there still is a Volt rapidly approaching completion. It’s so easy to glaze over this, but the Volt project as well as the company itself had a very near death experience this past year. A sincere “thank you” to GM for committing to this vehicle, especially for when it would have been real easy not to.
I wish a very Happy New Year to everyone here!

Dec 31st, 2009 (9:23 am)Well not yet….
I cannot imagine that GM would throw in the towel on the Volt, but I also did not imagine that GM would nearly disappear from the automotive front.
Happy New Year to GM, and lets make 2010 a year that we remember and reminisce about being the year that we began the transition from a petroleum-based to an electric-based transportation system.
After following this site for the past couple years, I am more convinced then ever, that electric transporation is going to become a reality.
Thanks, again Lyle, for all the work you do to keep the message going and to promote the electrification of the automobile.

“[ZENN president Ian Clifford] He is confident that EEStor will pull the wraps of their mysterious “battery” very soon; his exact word was “imminent” and that I could, in fact, hold my breath for their announcement. “(Bill Moore, EV World, November 29, 2006)”

Dec 31st, 2009 (10:06 am)This site has been the very best by far for our learnings about Voltec.
It’s a treasure-trove in and of itself for the positive impact it has had down through the years for assisting the public to comprehend an entirely different set of technologies.
Lyle’s the one who is asking all the right questions, and directing the conversations toward the technical aspects that are the very most important. We either learn our technologies in depth, or those same technologies may have us delving financially into our pockets in depth to correct for our indifference to respecting and adhering to their specifications.
2010 has all the signs about it to be one exceptionally-incredible and highly prosperous new year! Especially for those who relentlessly demand of themselves to learn about technologies. That describes everyone here, by the way.
Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Dec 31st, 2009 (10:15 am)I’d like to join the chorus of thanks to Lyle for his tireless efforts with this site (and putting up with us). He took his own desire to see something happen and did something remarkable – he did everything he could to make it happen. In a sense, even if he’d failed, it would have been an incredible effort. As it is, he’s taken us along on his historic adventure, and for that I’ll always be grateful.
As someone already said very well, I’ve learned a lot about many related topics that touch on the Volt, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Statik for a lot of that. He’s taught me a lot (on so many levels)(lol), and his guest op-eds are a real plus too. Thanks as well to all the posters for sharing their knowledge and opinions daily (and their patience).
Sorry for the long post, but it’s been great participating in this site, and we have an even more exciting year ahead!
I wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year!

I’ve done a little ’spreading the word’ in other websites I go to. Here’s a thread I started in a bicycle website I’m a part of (stuart22=starliner there). There’s still plenty of distrust of GM and anti-GM sentiment existing, but as this thread shows, some of them are softening up and getting interested in the Volt and what it’s all about:

Dec 31st, 2009 (12:20 pm)I gotta ask. There is this “article” on theeestory.com that talks of a small ultracapacitor to an electric bicycle builder. It acts like something from EEStor was actually shipped to this guy. There is a video of the guy riding the bicycle with an electric motor. The “battery” looks like an ordinary sized battery that normal electric bicycles (if there is a “normal” electric bike) use, not at all the size of a supposed EEStor unit (2×2x8). It looks like a joke to me, but what do I know? Dated 2 days ago. Never mind, I now see that it is talking about a unit that is “expected” to arrive. How could I have missed that?

Dec 31st, 2009 (1:36 pm)The on-board charger is capable of accepting 240 volts, but only through a professionally installed device available from GM to Volt owners at extra cost. This is as much for the protection of your house as for themselves; they don’t want to be subject to lawsuits from home fires caused by amateur wiring (though I know that I would get it right!!!).
When plugged into the GM 240V charger, the Volt should fully recharge in 3 hours, instead of the usual 8 (on a dedicated 110V circuit), or 11 hours (on 110V at an optionally lower setting to avoid tripping the breaker on a non-dedicated outlet).
Charging behavior is non-linear (it takes less than half the time to get half the charge), so you could get 20 miles’ worth in around 3 hours at 110V on a dedicated outlet, if you had to. Because of the engine turning a generator when stored electricity is depleted, you should never be forced into this situation.

Levi has come a long way, but the Vet still refuses to see him. It took three adults to hold him down for his shots (all wearing long leather gloves). We’ve had cats for ~35 years, but never two that were the same. A lot like kids, I guess.
Happy New Year!

Jan 2nd, 2010 (9:19 am)My understanding was that the 240v unit was a separate charger. My question still remains, what happens if you plug the on board charger into 240v. Pretty easy to make an adapter to do so. Pretty important that you be able to do so if the vehicle is to be sold worldwide. Most of the world doesn’t have our electrical jumble which includes 120v.

Jan 2nd, 2010 (12:29 pm)Happy New Year to everyone at GM-Volt.com!
Lyle, congratulations on a tremendously successful year. I still have no idea how you manage to keep up the pace of information flow on this site and still have any semblance of live beyond GM-Volt, let alone a day job! I’ve said it before, but only history will show how this site has managed to keep a multi-national corporation (GM) focused on a dreamed-up concept during the most difficult financial crisis of our lifetime. There is no doubt in my mind that the collective enthusiasm and interest generated from this site is largely responsible for keeping GM on track.
The only thing that could top your Top-10 list would be to have Letterman name the VOLT in his on-air Top-10 stories for 2010!
