ccombs: I am beginning to think maybe this silent operation isn’t so great and a pedestrian alert is a good idea.

Each winter I spend a couple of weeks at a Florida retirement community where there are lots of electric golf carts on the community roads. I know they are there. I know I should look even if I don’t hear anything, but I still walk in front of one of these things on every trip. Since they only use these golf carts inside the community, drivers are pretty alert for pedestrians, but when people are driving their normal commute and pull into a parking lot, they’ll forget that their electric car is silent. After a few dozen people get run over in mall and supermarket parking lots, the government will mandate some sort of sound device on electric vehicles. It’s only a matter of time.
